Solved! White 'pellets' found in grass lawn
My dog keeps finding (and eating...) these little white pellet things in the lawn, I don't really want to touch them but they seem soft, about 8mm long and 5mm diameter. They always appear in these little clumps, buried at the bottom of the grass next to the soil.
I have been in the house about 6 months now and haven't added any fertilisers or treatment to the lawn, I don't know if any type of lawn care was done to the lawn prior to that though.
I'm in the UK if that helps at all!

These look just like the suet nuggets I feed to the wild birds. If they are, it's probably a rodent collecting them and storing them in it's nest.

u/JRad8888 13h ago
I think this is the answer. I also feed the birds the suet nuggets. They take considerably longer to eat then regular seed. At a busy feeder, most birds just fly off with them. I’ve witnessed blue jays, nuthatches, and chickadees fly back and forth several times…presumably hoarding them.

I think you’re right - I do see crows digging around in the same area I found these, I assumed they were eating ants but this makes more sense.

looks like bird food. Magpies and some other birds will 'bury' food like this to save it for later

My dad and I fed some grapes to some crows or ravens in Kensington gardens, when one had its fill we watched it tuck it down into the grass and then put a small pile of old mown grass that was near it on top of the grape. I didn’t know they did this and it was truly mind blowing to watch! I took me about 3 mins to find the grape! We covered it back up, don’t worry!

u/randomPerson2894 14h ago
That was my guess. Looks like suet pellets.
3
u/Lori-too 13h ago
This made the most sense to me, so I looked, and all suet pellets are cut from cylindrical dies. (AI (fwiw!) confirmed that all dies used for this purpose are cylindrical .) I'm mystified!

Could be squirrel eggs. They nest and lay their eggs in the late summer.

u/Shovelhead_Fred 15h ago
Whoa what squirrels lay eggs?
EDIT: screw you pal you got me good there 😂

u/Relative_Tomato2011 15h ago
No they don’t lay eggs, that is a troll comment
This looks most like a bumblebee nest. Bumblebees often move into old mouse or vole nests in lawns, and those waxy, cream-to-yellow lumps are typical of their brood cells and cocoons tucked into a ball of dry grass and moss.
Since it's October, the colony is probably finished or close to it. Bumblebee nests only last one season: the workers and old queen die off in autumn, and only new queens survive, hibernating elsewhere. If you don't see bees coming and going, it's almost certainly abandoned, and you can leave it or rake it out. If bees are still active, they're usually gentle, and leaving it a few weeks is the kindest option.
One other possibility is a rodent's food stash. Mice sometimes cache suet pellets or bird-feeder food, and these could pass for that. If they feel greasy or crumbly like suet rather than waxy and papery, and you have a bird feeder nearby, that's the likelier answer.58

There is a difference between a troll and a truly funny misdirection answer, this was the latter. Just enjoy the comedy once in a while.

Some old man at a rest stop asked my boys if they wanted to see this trick and they were cocky, like they know this one. Except, the old man had an amputated thumb and their minds were blown lol

Reminds me of this older guy, Rob, I used to work with a long time ago that wore an eyepatch.
I was chatting with him in the break room one day when a newer guy walked in, saw the eyepatch and said "Oh hey, a Raiders fan, huh? Getting into the spirit for the start of the season? You've got the eyepatch on the wrong side though!" and Rob went "Oh, thanks for letting me know!" and straight up moved his eyepatch to the other side, revealing his completely empty eye socket, grinned at the guy and asked "How's that? Better?"
I just fucking lost it! I felt pretty bad because it seemed to really freak out the younger guy but I just couldn't stop laughing. After the younger guy stammered out a "sorry" and left, and I finally calmed down enough to stop laughing, Bob fixed his eyepatch and told me "Well I'm glad SOMEONE thought my joke was funny! That guy sure didn't seem to appreciate it."

I aspire to be that old man some day. Perhaps with more appendages though

u/EikonVera_tou_Lilith 13h ago
Do you mean more appendages than the old man in the story? or more than you, personally, have now?
3
u/Cheese_Pleasurer 13h ago
I currently have all of mine

u/CattusPater 4h ago
Right, but if you had extras you could r rtake the trick to a whole new level...

Snipe eggs. Look similar to squirrel eggs.
Source: Avid snipe hunter.

u/engineerdrummer 14h ago
Lol. Snipe are real. They're birds (so snipe eggs are real, also) and there is a legal hunting season for them in the United States.

Look, I'm an older lady & I live in the South. When I read your comment I thought "Squirrels lay eggs?! How did I not know this?!" My eyebrows were raised plumb up over the top of my head! You got me good & you actually made me laugh so hard I was crying! Now I have to show this to my 86 year old Dad!!
ETA: Dad didn't fall for it!

Does it resemble your dogs food? I looks like dog has vomited.

My guess as well. If you leave kibble outside and it gets soaked it looks like this

u/lmcmulli 14h ago
This is my guess. Looks like what I find if my dog eats too fast and regurgitates. If it’s buried maybe a critter is hoarding it for later?

Here's a clue for you. Squirrels are mammals and there are less than half a dozen mammal species known that lay eggs.
This sub goes to shit with joke comments too often. People actually think they're serious if they're not properly flagged as a joke comment.

u/WillieBear_18 12h ago
Yup. The platypus and echidna (a weirdly cute little land creature I would best describe as a cross between a porcupine and a platypus).

Looks like morsels of suet buried by a bird! Would smell very nice to your doggie. Are they oily?
8
u/Sneak_Salad1111 15h ago
Slug or snail eggs. May wanna bring your doggo to the vet to check for parasites like lungworms. Check for toxins in case neighbours used slug bait poisoning as well.

It's dog or cat food that a squirrel has squirrelled away for later I have them in my lawn and some with bird seed and some with nuts

Is it dog food that he’s puking up? The sprinklers and/or morning condensation can make it look like this
1
u/DeletedMainforJob 13h ago
Did you, by any chance, see an impoverished person take a very uncomfortable poo at that exact location?
1
u/jabe1127 15h ago
I wonder if another dog nearby has been using your yard to hide his treats for a rainy day.

Do you have crows visit your yard? This could've been stashed by a crow.

It looks like scorpio ant bait pellets. They are usually pinkish salmon color. But once it rained or it has been a long time ago that they were applied then turn into white color. It is applied to the grass area so pets couldn't find and eat them.

Probably rabbit poo. Good luck getting them to stop eating it 😬

u/Organic-Ad6957 15h ago
Rabbit poop is super round and black though
3
u/-RedXV- 15h ago
It's probably Wombat poop. Their poop is square shaped.
2
u/Organic-Ad6957 15h ago
Wombat poop is pretty damn big though they usually lay those blocks in a log
1
u/-RedXV- 15h ago
I wasn't aware of how big they were. Thanks for the info.
1
u/Organic-Ad6957 15h ago
No problem think of them as a 2x1.5sq inch rectangle usually connected to several other blocks lol

Rabbit droppings can be poisonous to dogs, watch out if your dog is doing this 💙
