What is it exactly and what does it do/what's it used for❓

That's so incredibly specific. Like those kitchen gadgets that do nothing but pit cherries or hull strawberries...only worse.

u/XeroEnergy270 1d ago
Well speaking as someone who works in s sporting goods store, this tool is used far more than a cherry pitter. Especially where I live. A large percentage of households have at least one hunter. So much so that there are programs for hunters to donate their extra deer to needy families, since 1 deer can produce almost a year's worth of meat for a small family.

u/Mayonnaise_Poptart 1d ago
I harvest way more cherries than deer. At least like three times as many.
351
u/Serepheth 1d ago
Three cherries to every deer. That’s a lotta deer.
167
u/MerleFSN 1d ago
Or very few cherries. Maybe 3.
36
u/Outside-Drag-3031 1d ago
To one deer. You'd need few enough cherries to round to zero, so... 1 cherry?

A mature (3.5 y/o) deer, on average, yields around 60 pounds of boneless meat. It varies a bit when considering factors like shot placement, how thoroughly it's butchered, and the deers overall health.

Neighborhood of 70 pounds (30 kg) of venison. Another 5-8 lbs (2-3 kg) if you include edible organ meat in the sausage.
30
u/Pstrap 1d ago
How necessary is this tool though? If you're dressing a deer you still need to cut open the stomach and cut out the guts and genitals and at that point cutting around the butthole is just a few more cuts with your knife. Then it stays attached to the intestines and all comes out together. I cant see carrying an extra tool like this with such a specific and limited use into the field. What does it even do, exactly?
43
u/BigHands66 1d ago
Those last few cuts around there are fairly precise cuts along with cutting the bone to get access. It’s a pain for hunters that haven’t been shown by an old timer. Once you get good and have a wire bone saw it takes about 1.5 mins.
40
u/tangentrification 1d ago
My fiance's dad does that shit after the sun goes down with barely any light. I'm gonna have to remember to ask him to teach us one of these years before he gets too old...
37
u/BigHands66 1d ago
Let’s hope it will be better than my lessons! I got “cut it open. Reach up and you’ll feel something real. Cut that. Drag all that out of the way. Cut the pelvis, break it and cut the whole butthole out. Start pulling and cut anything trying to stay in.”

It helps prevent the contents of the intestines from spilling on the meat. You could also just use a stick or tie it off though.
4
u/toxicbolete 1d ago
Yeah my dad used one at least one of the times he brought a deer home but it wasn’t essential and we hunted so close to home we didn’t have to field dress and mostly just brought the whole carcass home and processed it in the garage. I miss that
24
u/Hoates-101 1d ago
Step one of field dressing a deer is " cut out and tie off the anus" I read that and said to myself - "Whelp, I guess I am not shooting any deer."
5
u/alloutofchewingum 1d ago
You have to chop pr saw through the pelvic bone to get the ass and bladder out and this is a difficult part of the process I suppose this might avoid that issue

u/neverenoughmags 1d ago
Not to be too graphic on here, but the.. tension... it causes to the skin around the anus when you pull outward makes these cuts a lot easier as the area has a lot of... elasticity....
4
u/Pstrap 1d ago
Okay, so, this device is essentially a buttplug you stick in the deer and it makes it easier to cut around? It doesn't remove the sphincter on its own? You still need to do knife work? This just plugs it up to contain the contents and make it easier to cut around? Is that right?

u/Adventure_Seeker277 1d ago
It’s a huge time saver. Typically in the field, I use it to pull out the rectum/lower intestine by sticking it in, twisting and then pulling it all out about 6 or so inches. When the rectum is twisted free, tie it off with a zip tie and cut behind the zip tie.
As I open the deer up to the sternum and cut through the rib cage and pull all the internals out, you can pull everything out and the tied off rectum will slide out through the hollowed out anus area with all other organs, intestines and stomach effectively removing the parts that will contaminate the meat.

My family used to hunt a single deer once a year and take it to a local butcher who would process it into a variety of cuts. Then we'd store it in the deep freeze. Lots of Hamburger Helper with venison instead. Wayyy cheaper than buying ground beef and other cuts outright for the year.

Places with lots of hunters naturally also have lots of local butchers. Its part of the local economy anywhere deer are in abundance and families hunt game for actual food.
I lived in southern oregon most my life, this is super common. I know three separate butchers who make a huge portion of their business butchering game, or local household farm animals like pig or cattle.
Often families in these areas also will co raise cattle. As in someone has some land. And two+ families pay to rent land for a cow. Year or two later the cow is butchered by local butcher and the butcher and families split the meat. In those cases the butcher takes a portion as their pay, and the families don't have to butcher it themselves. (My family did tho, core childhood memory at like 3-4 years old my first time).
You deep freeze most the meat. It lasts a whole year for a family of 5 for meat almost daily in one form or another.
Alternatively, once a year all the uncles go out hunting together, bag like 6 deer or some elk, bring them all in to butcher, and now several families also have meat for the year. My best friends dad did this every year. Since he stayed with my family often and my mother always helped their grandmother out in town shopping etc (especially after my friend and I left for the navy) he got a good portion for my family as well, not just the group he went out with.

u/stmCanuck 1d ago

Can confirm. Western NY, Home Depot has hand-written signs noting home many deer any deep freeze on the floor can hold, e.g. 21 c ft, "Holds 3-5 deer!" (hypothetical example)
4
u/DismalTutor570 1d ago
Yup same here in Louisiana. Deer season the deep freezes in every store are marked with how many deer they hold. Cool to hear other regions do that as well!
8
u/no_one_denies_this 1d ago
You take it to a processor, usually. They cut it,'package it and label it and then you freeze it.
4
u/Flaginthebackground 1d ago
Family is from small town Iowa, not a grocery store for almost an hour. Guys go hunting and come back to a family friend who can butcher the deer and gets to keep a portion as payment. Most is given back and stored in large freezers in the basement and given to family and friends. Hide gets used too but I never learned much about it but every year we would get a buck’s head mounted on a plaque and have the kids hot glue stuff to it like plastic coins, earrings, googly eyes, etc.

u/Dwrecked90 1d ago
I kill 2-3 a year. I skin/butcher/vacuum seal it all myself. 1 fills my freezer, the other 2 I'll give out packages to friends and family who either don't hunt or have gotten too old to really hunt now. There's tons of places around me with signs that say "donate a hog or deer here." I don't know the specifics, but i know those shops work with churches and women shelters to give meat to those in need

That doesn't seem like nearly enough meat for an entire family for a year from a single animal. Am i vastly underestimating how much meat comes off of one deer?
8
u/XeroEnergy270 1d ago
I mean. A buck can be anywhere from 150 to 200 lbs. Obviously not all edible meat, but still quite a lot. And a struggling family isnt eating meat every meal. When I was a kid, there would be stints where I didnt eat meat for a month or 2
8
u/Box-Intelligent 1d ago
Last deer I took was 140lbs which is pretty good for my region but I ended up with about 50lbs of meat. I think you overestimate how much comes off a deer, I don't think like a third of a pound of meat a week per member of a family of 3 would be considered fed for a year

I grew up with a giant cherry tree. My mom would make us kids climb the tree to pick cherries, then pit the cherries for several weeks each year, so she could preserve them and we got cherry pie year round. We had FOUR cherry pitters and the kitchen looked like a scene from DEXTER.

It does. You insert it in the anus and then, when you pull it out, it pulls out the colon. You can then tie it off to prevent the feces from getting on the meat when you butcher the deer.

This is exactly what it is, my uncle used them upstate when we would go hunting. You put it in the anus, twist around, and pull out. Iirc brings not only the organ out but also the “gunk”. Very handy when gutting on the side of the mountain. Only natural alternative would be to scoop everything out with your hand

It is an alternative to the usual method of breaking open the hip to get out the intestines. You basically pull out everything through a hole, where the anus would be. The plastic thing is used like a hook. One of the more valuable parts of the respective venison (the hind legs) has no way to be damaged this way.
In Germany we call it "ringeln" wich basically transltes to circeling or drawing a ring around something.

Why do you need to pull an anus out? Genuine question, I know nothing about processing game.
7
6
u/BoondockUSA 17h ago
Organs and guts very quickly spoil compared to the meat. Leaving them in will ruin the meat, so removing the organs and guts is required to preserve the meat. That means every organ from the neck to the butt has to come out. It’s easier than it sounds because there is surprisingly little actually holding things in place.
The challenge is the butt opening that is attached by skin and membranes. You don’t want to just sever the poop chute because poop would spill and get on the meat, and it would mean leaving a portion of a bacteria filled organ attached at the anus. Cutting the connective tissue of the anus away from the skin and meat is delicate work and is somewhat time consuming. This tool is supposed to make the process easier.

I’ve never used one of these and have cleaned plenty of deer just cutting the butthole out as I was shown as a kid. I feel like this product is trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. You said you’ve used it, so wouldn’t it just rupture the digesting tract further in and release its contents inside the cavity? Literally the entire thing we’re trying to avoid?

I’ve used them but don’t prefer them. Splitting the pelvis open is easier imo.
What I did though was used this after I had gotten everything already pulled out. It just takes what’s left of the anus and pulls it outside of the cavity so that anything you didn’t cut out is now outside of the carcass.

Can you translate this for a city slicker who has never hunted a day in his life? What is “field dressing”?
58
u/plasmabeans3405 1d ago
of course, when field dressing a deer, or any animal reallly, the goal of course is to remove the internal organs so they won't spoil the meat. Making one cut on the underside of the deer, all the way up to the neck (through the sternum) and the other down to the nether reagions. The lower cut goes around the butthole of the deer, so when all the other connective tissure is cut loose, all the internal organs (ideally) come out all at once. I can usually life up the deer by the ears (or antlers if its a buck) and have it all fall out at once, although it takes some practice. The product shown in the post only makes an unnecessary mess of things. The goal is to not cut open the guts themselves, and this product does exactly that.
12
u/GAFSGFYS 1d ago
When you say spoil the meat, would accidentally cutting open the stomach or intestines spoil it? Is it something about acid or just “waste” on the meat that spoils it? Could the meat be washed and saved or is that a time sensitive thing as well? Not a city slicker but also never been a hunter..
25
u/plasmabeans3405 1d ago
Yes and no! Yes if you cut the guts and leave it to sit for a while it can cause it to start to spoil, and no becasue if you cut them open on accident and wash out the inside with water afterwods (as soon as possible) it will be perfectly fine. And it has less to do with the acid and more to do with the bacteria!

Intestines and organs are full of bacteria which will happily begin digesting (decaying) your body from the inside out. A deer with start to bloat in a surprising amount of time. Pulling all that out will make the meat cleaner, safer, and taste better. Another big part of it is heat control. When you pull out all the organs you are quickly removing tons of hot mass, which let's the meat cool fast and stay fresh longer. Usually deer hunting happens in the cooler autumn mornings (location dependant) or theres snow. Gutting a deer and filling the cavity with snow will get the meat down to refrigerator or lower like temps. It also isn't a messy process. Your organs are mainly connected by 2 things, your mouth and your butt. You make a couple of cuts and put the deer on a slight incline, you can remove everything in 1 quick pull of the esophagus. Furthermire, if you get a clean shot through the heart there is next to no bleeding and just about all of it is contained in the thoracic cavity, basically a bag in the chest. Once a deer is field dressed its basically no different than meat from the store in "cleanliness" when handling.

It's for field dressing (removing the guts and internal organs you don't plan to eat) a deer. There are plenty of other ways to do it, but with this tool, you shove it up the butt and it grabs onto to the anus. You cut a circle around the butt hole. Then you cut through the esophagus. Now you just pull on the tools handle and you can drag the whole digestive system out. Mind you, I have never done it this way, I've just seen videos.

The description is literally in the photo of the advert you provided. use a little bit of context clues. you're clearly in a outdoors / sportsmans / hunting sales flyer. do you think its for cabbage? maybe its for gardening...

It's for removing the anal canal from animals you've killed: https://www.basspro.com/p/hunters-specialties-butt-out-2-big-game-dressing-tool

You shove it up the backside of a dead deer (or other critter), give it a little twist, and pull. I'll leave what happens next up to your imagination.
When hunting for meat, you generally want to get rid of the digestive system pretty quickly. This helps accomplish that.
There's a lot of things that people get squeamish about, that happen before you buy some meat on a little Styrofoam shrink wrapped tray.
