Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo

It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.

After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.

As explained by the previous flair announcement:

The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.

While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.

Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.

Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.

Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

People who fake service dogs are scum

It absolutely grinds my gears when people do this.

Sunday morning in a cafe in uptown Waterloo, and this incredibly privileged girl was there with her "service dog". The dog was constantly sniffing at every single person who walked past. Real service dogs are highly trained to focus entirely on their handler, so my suspicions were already up.

And what do you know? The second she walked out the door and onto the sidewalk, she immediately unclipped and removed the fake service vest.

I absolutely hate this. It is so incredibly disrespectful to the people who actually spend thousands and years of hard work to get their dogs properly trained. Genuine handlers need their service animals with them for legitimate medical reasons, and selfish people like this make the world harder and more skeptical for everyone who actually relies on a service dog.

I'm trying to find something similar to this

https://www.wayfair.ca/dining/pdp/winston-porter-71-h-x-315w-kitchen-pantry-with-bookcases-glass-door-kitchen-hutch-c116006440.html?piid=584928185&redir=C116006440&rtype=8

But don't want the crap quality that comes from wayfair, or others similar to it. I've tried looking online at different furniture places, solid wood etc. And I'm not seeing anything even close. It doesn't have to be white, it could be stained wood too.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to look, or even people who could custom-build it?

Thanks!

Attic Insulation

Hello - My house is 30 years old. I am looking to get Attic insulation done.

Just looking to get information about some reliable contractors.

I booked an appointment with a contractor and he provided me with a quote of around 3800 CAD. He also said quote includes not just insulation with fibre glass but also additional vents. I currently have 2 vents at front and 2 at rear. He recommends 5 vents.

Any info and guidance will be appreciated.

Anyone know what was going on between Waterloo and Wellesley around 2:25am today?

There were a bunch of firefighters out looking like they were searching the fields for something, and a few families gathered across the road watching.

Looking for Mennonite Furniture

I'm looking to buy bar stools but have found that the ones in the big box stores are poor quality. Does anyone know of a local Mennonite place that does these? I'd like to go direct to the source.

Immigrants of Waterloo Region, could you maybe help me with a school project?

I hope the title caught your attention. First and foremost, Hello! I am a WLU student and I have a project due for a class on food in film. I need your help!

I need your recipes. Whatever you made, your mom/dad/grandparents made that remind you of your birth country I need them.

I’m making an interactive map where you can click on the pins to various countries and it will populate the recipe. A coworker from India already helped me fulfilling his country.

I will also add Indigenous cuisine from North America if I can find someone willing to share their family recipe with me.

If you can’t help, that’s okay! Maybe you know a place where I can find what I am seeking like one of the local library drop in groups.

Anyway! Thank you Waterloo!

(I should mention, I will share this project with those who help, and hopefully to the broader community if I can!)

Switched from Uber to Waterloo Taxi

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

Was about to Uber to work this morning and because of surge pricing, the price for a 12 minute drive was 45$. It's usually $17-23. Lots of surge pricing happening recently but that was an absolutely insane price.

I remembered the taxi app that my husband uses (Lokal) and quickly downloaded it, then ordered a cab for $26. The car arrived in less than 2 minutes, and made a u turn to pick me up in front of my apartment without being asked. The driver was VERY nice to me throughout, and offered to stop by Starbucks if I wanted coffee (during a fixed price ride). Not enough time before my shift so I said no, but that was nice. Also the car smelled good. Will have my business moving forward.

Municipal Election Voter Research Resources Roundup

Hi all, I wanted to put together a round-up post of voter research resources for the municipal that have been mentioned in other posts/threads. I've done a quick summary of the resource and added some context for the groups behind each one.

waterlooregionvotes.org - Brings together candidate information (links to websites & social media), event listings & event recordings, articles, questionnaires and links to official election information from each municipality. Also includes a worksheet to track your picks/research notes. Put together by the volunteers at CivicTechWR.

wrvotes.com - Basic site that links to all the official election pages for each municipality. Each of those sites covers how to vote in your area and includes some candidate information. wrvotes.com is hosted by the Region of Waterloo, each linked site is by that municipality.

votecompass.thestar.com - A questionnaire that you take to find your alignment with local candidates. It is active for Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge, but not the Townships. Vote Compass is an application developed by Vox Pop Labs and is often presented for elections by a media outlet (in this case Torstar/Metroland Media), and supported by sponsors (in this case the Atkinson Foundation and Toronto Foundation).

Experience with Polestar ownership?

I'm considering replacing the family hauler, but I have a few requirements that severely limit my options. A Polestar 2 may fit the bill, but it looks like the nearest service point is in Oakville... So, if I understand it correctly, if there's a regular service to be done, I'll basically lose a full day and if the thing decides to go into limp mode, I'll shell out for a long distance tow.

Volvo waterloo won't service them.

Does anyone have a Polestar and could double check my assumption?

Thanks in advance!

Conestogo Bridge Closed to Cyclist and Pedestrians....Why?

Went to cycle across the Glasgow Street bridge today and discovered concrete barriers unsuccessfully attempting to block access which allows cyclist and pedestrians to cross the bridge. I understand the bridge being closed to vehicle traffic in order to prevent it from being used as a way to bypass the bridge construction on Northfield Drive, but why block cyclist and pedestrians? If the Region is concerned that the path is to close to the edge of the river why not stagger barriers on the road which will stop vehicles but allow cyclists and pedestrians to get through?

70 Overdoses in Waterloo Region in ~4 days

Post image
228 Upvotes

The absence of leadership from all levels of government on drug-related issues remains profoundly disturbing and dangerous. 74 suspected OD deaths in Waterloo region in the first 8 months of 2026. 1876 suspected OD deaths across Ontario in the same period as per Coroner. Unknown amount of injuries. This is what politically-contaminated deadly failure looks like.
