Hoping it was a one-off situation that she'll be able manage and prevent going forward. That was a scary thing to see in the moment and I was glad she seemed okay so quickly. Now let's go beat the Aces!

Discussion Keys to this win: dominating OREBs, Chen outplaying Burton, Gueye winning her minutes against Aâja
102
Upvotes
This teamâs collective defensive competence is what limited open 3s for chesea gray and jackie young. Obviously Kiah stokes is more than capable of playing Aâja 1 on 1, but the resilience Gueye showed as a rookie, finishing 4-5 shot attempts when Aâja went to double, and guarding the MVP well was fantastic. This allows Stokes to rest and not get into foul trouble.
Due to the consistent defense we kept at the 5, Aâja ran out of gas by the 4th quarter, settling for multiple 3s which she made none of, and not being able to draw enough doubles to get her guards open 3s. The only time you saw her get loose was when Nakase tried to have KT guard Aâja.
Early in the 3rd quarter, burton smokes a wide open layup, and next possession chucked up a stepback 3 without getting her teammates any touches. Nakase immediately calls timeout and subs Chen in for her, Burton never sees the floor for the remaining 18 minutes. Jewel Lloyd leaving the game with injury at the same time forced Yamamoto to play PG for most of the 2nd half, meaning Nakase could leave Chen in for the rest of the game with her superior ability to attack the tiny defender and finish layups.
17 OREBS for the valks and 2 OREBS for the Aces? Self explanatory
Gabby williams did an excellent job scoring in the 1st half efficiently and consistently drew Aâja out to the perimeter to create lanes for her teammates to score. She still loses focus at times, getting very sloppy at the end of the 2nd quarter and Nakase mentioned in the halftime interview she should have pulled her starters sooner because they were tired. In the middle of the 3rd quarter, I thought Gabby was much more poised as a playmaker, throwing multiple dimes into the paint and using her threat as the first option scorer to be patient and execute the right play.
Finally, the Valkyries did not settle for 3s in the 2nd half. They only took 24 3s this game, down from their average of 30 3PA/game, but in the 2nd quarter, whenever they got into low shot clock possessions like they usually do, they got downhill with Chen, Gabby, Tip and even though they werenât efficient, this allowed them to have multiple 2nd opportunities with our OREBs and keep the Aces from getting easy layups down in transition. This was probably why you didnât see Salaun see the floor in the 2nd half either. She is too weak as a defender and rebounder to faciliate the dirty work that got us this win. Kaila Charles, KT and Stokes are crucial to keep the game slow and gritty.
If the Valkyries can continue to guard 1 on 1, Nakase looks comfortable letting the lack of perimeter shooting provide the pressure needed to beat this team. Playing Aâja straight up and not letting Stokes get into foul trouble early is my key to defense for this series. Offensively, I would like to see Gabby williams continue to be patient as a playmaker, and knock the 3 down like she did tonight. Burton has been limited offensively in this playoff run, and while her defense wasnât needed tonight due to the âwhoever offenseâ we could attack Yamamoto with, Chen kept the pressure on the rim and this prevented us from the stagnant runs we usually see in late game stretches.
