Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion - Severely Underrated(?)

Does anyone else feel that this game is extremely disrespected in an unwarranted manner? Sure 1 and 2 are classics and it would never live up to those expectations and it's a little on the short side - but some of the coolest guns and FPS combat in the genre. I always feel bad that people treat this game like it's not worthy of being played.

Anyone else have some positive things to say about this game?

I also have a very nostalgic memory of this game - and it's cool that it was an N64 exclusive for the longest time.

The cutscenes themselves were crazy for a N64 game.

The modern release makes the game actually all right. But playing the n64 version is such a slog

It’s super strange for a Turok game, but that’s part of its charm. It’s cringe (in a fun way), it has surprisingly good horror elements, it leans heavily into the demonic/otherworldly aspects of the franchise, and like you said it has great guns and combat. It’s probably sacrilege to say, but I actually like it more than Turok 1 but less than Turok 2.

For me it's the same: T2 > T3 > T1. T2 is a massive game with epic soundtrack, brutal weapons and great enemy animations. But sometimes it was a choir to get through some of the huge maps. T3, while being far more lineair and shorter, was still a lot of fun. Music whise it was much different: moore moody and cinematic, while T2 was bombastic and classical-ish. T3's weapons are a step back from T2 with the Firestorm Cannon as a prime example. Enemies lack the variety in animations compared to the previous games, but are also very different and unique at the same time.

I like that game but it is short and feels weird as a turok game. It's like they tried to be half life.

But with that being said, the game itself was really impressive and fun. I still think turok 2 is the standard and wish more content came out for it.

(3 is kinda my favourite)

I love Half Life though, so...

2 had the best guns, but was too confusing. 1 is super nostalgic but janky. In 3, you get to go back to some of 1s levels so you get double nostalgia!

I agree! Especially love the horror elements of the game and that it feels like a cinematic game. Part 2 is nice, but too confusing to play for most people back in the day, also much harder. I only ever finished and enjoyed 1 and 3, the latter being my favorite

I remember as a kid entering the toy store and saw Part III playing on the counter with the controller ready, I asked if I could play and they let me, they were also enjoying the game as it just came out and were discussing how it kinda resembles half-life in its own way, I was impressed with the opening level and bought the game 10 min later, most fun I've had with any Turok title

What an awesome memory!!! That had to have been the R Zone? That's the only place I remember where you could do that.

Turok 3 is my favorite game in the series and imo it's better than the first two games. I know my opinion is unpopular but I don't care. Also it ran much better than 2 on the N64. I like that the game gives us two characters to play as, each with their own weapons and different paths to take.

I totally agree, chasing my friends with the cerebral bore was a ton of fun. 🤣

Great point!! And I think all of them are brilliant. Just love the engine for 3 so much

My favorite as well! Very replayable

I didn't know it was hated, I loved it when it came out but I was also very young. I still think it's a solid game, the story is entertaining and the multiplayer was a blast. This game and Goldeneye were my 2 favorite games to play with buddies. It had good choices for playable characters kinda like Time Splitters.

I never got to play its multiplayer. That sounds like a blast though man

Turok 3 is absolutely my favorite in the series, but it is appropriately rated. It’s a short and linear game.

It could have been so much more but Acclaim was dying and barely got it finished before going belly up.

Fair remark. It's still a nice little showcase of the N64 tech at the end stage of its lifespan

Yes, and I really like how it had cut scenes and focused on story more than any of the previous games. The cliffhanger kills me because I would love to know who that other Adon was, what happened to Adon’s mother, and if she was able to find Josh.

For a fan it was a bit hard to like. It had a story and better framerate than Turok 2 but everything else was a let down. It felt sluggish and graphics were just ugly. Still played it multiple times though. It's not bad, just not premium like T2.

I think the graphics are beautiful. It's literally one of the best looking N64 games ever made.

2

It had gorgeous moments and some kind of nice organic grit but I really missed the sharpness and lightning effects of Turok 2. Glad you like it though!

Turok 2 is goated. Understandable

Played the N64 recently, it was really fun.

Incredible for 32MiB.

1

u/insofarasof 16d ago

Agreed. They got every pixel out of that game.

2

u/West-Surround-8857 16d ago

Maybe was an error being my first turok game. I never played any other.

It has a wide range of variety, alongside rage wars I think they're the bests fps on n64.

1

u/insofarasof 16d ago

Highly recommend 2 and 1

2

u/West-Surround-8857 16d ago

I seen in comments here, they're very different?

1

u/insofarasof 16d ago

Yes the first one is pretty much an amazing platformer with fps elements and the 2nd is an exploratory action adventure style fps. Both are incredible.

1

u/West-Surround-8857 16d ago

Exploratory? What do you mean?

1

u/insofarasof 16d ago

It has a sprawling maze like level design.

Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is an underrated game, and while being short is the most notable thing to work against it, I liked how the story differed after the events of the second game. Plus, the combat and weapons went along with the story by being among the coolest in the genre.
It would be awesome if Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion came out on Nintendo Switch Online despite already having a Nintendo Switch remaster, as it would complete the trilogy on the Virtual Console and put respect on Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion (including the already-existent remaster).

u/WwwWario 15d ago

After it got remastered, I actually like this game more than the first. Imo, weapons feel better, graphics are better, levels (while fewer in amount) has much better and more varied design and layout, 3 different characters (4 if you include Joshua), better and more boss fights...

I think the remastered engine and gameplay for T3 is so crisp and good, I've wished ever since its release that we got some sort of official expabsion or DLC for the game

I did not enjoy it on N64 enough to replay, but it is vastly improved on XBox/Nightdive remake. Turok 2 takes a commitment but it is my favorite. Turok 3 can be beat in an afternoon, but that's not a bad thing with my schedule as an adult, lol

2

u/CactusSplash95 13d ago

Is there a single soul who doesn't love that game? It crushes the first Turok

2

u/insofarasof 13d ago

Hey now, I appreciate giving Turok 3 its respect but Turok 1 is an absolute classic! Might be my favorite atmosphere in a 3D platforming game ever.

I love the weapons, gameplay and graphics the most. First two games beat it for atmosphere but still a fun and challenging experience.

I don't know why, but for some reason I can't quite quantify it just feels like a lesser game than 2.

Continuing the story beat of Oblivion and the Flesh Eaters just should have hit harder than it did.
