Meta Titanfall's mech combat got me hooked, ended up building my own mecha battle royale because of it

Titanfall's titan combat is still unmatched IMO.

It inspired me to build Mecha Royale, a browser-based mecha battle royale (no installs, just drop in and fight).

I'm not trying to compete with Titanfall in any way, just paying homage to the genre.

Edit: You can play the game at www.mecharoyale.com. Mods let me know if this breaks the self-promo rule and I'll pull it.

  1. This is AI
  2. Fun fact: The devs of Apex Legends actually did try to find a way to fit titans into the game in a way that it would be balanced and determined itd be impossible.

8

u/Available_Pop_7654 11h ago

Do you actually believe your second point?

Like not even just a fun event? Surely they could try a simple event instead of claiming it's impossible. Respawn is like the boat of theseus. All the devs or most of them are gone probably (no evidence so it's purely speculative).

No instead they bait me in playing their game with stupid cinematics with titans.(almost worked)

Also. Apex isnt the only ones who failed at this idea. Fortnite did too for a season and came to the same conclusion.

The main problem is that its impossible to do a balanced mech while preserving the power fantasy and vibe of piloting a mech in warfare against ordinary people.

1

u/Etheran_Relic 36m ago

Have you not played Titanfall 2 there is a lot of fighting mechs as pilots and it was balanced in way that makes sense.

1

u/beansoncrayons 28m ago

There's an incredibly minor difference that in one game there's unlimited respawns and in the other there's not

1

u/Gambit_Nokstor 4h ago

Meanwhile they release a sword that 2 taps red shield, ahhh yesss the game needs to be balanced when it comes to Titanfall but other collabs can run entire seasons because of how broken the items are, at least now they did a separate mode where all the collabs are now (I'm talking about wildcard)

1

u/Foreign_Pea2296 2h ago

The second point doesn't mean anything.

It didn't worked for Apex Legends because of the direction they wanted to go. It doesn't means that it's impossible for any games.

Titans didn't worked in Apex because they wanted Titan to be balanced with non-Titan players. Here there is no "non-Titan" player so this design problem is moot.

-4

u/TomatoCo 10h ago

Okay, here's my idea for how to do Titans in Apex.

Titan parts are scattered around the map. Arms, legs, cores, weapons, those-secondary-arm-shoulder-things. You loot them, hook up a balloon MGS V style, and they get yoinked to an overhead craft/structure to be assembled. The stats and appearance are determined by what you grab.

After a certain point (based on map area left) you can call in your Titan but it shows where the drop'll be for a solid minute before it actually lands and everyone can see the giant red drop light.

Why... You can't even tell. You're just a mindless drone being told what to think.

24

u/ItsHyperBro 14h ago

YOU can’t tell. If you’ve worked in specifically game development and coding or are just at all familiar with the way AI codes and the looks that AI games have, it’s instantly obvious. I’ve seen a hundred games that look almost exactly like this.

I could give a million reasons for why AI generated stuff is terrible, but the most important one is that relegating art to a machine that has no semblance of creativity results in a product that can never be any better than the sum of its parts at best.

-14

u/xevlar 13h ago

I can tell. I meant golden goose couldn't. My bad forgot comprehension is an issue for most people.

11

u/ItsHyperBro 13h ago

Being able to tell immediately is good but he also responded to a comment that has straight up admitted proof of it which is also important to have.

Maybe just stop being a prick

yeah i could see that from the pill at the bottom with the useless 'live' indicator on the left

3

u/GoldenGoose120 17h ago

sorry lol, where am i looking? i dont see anything

11

u/joelnodxd 16h ago

at the start of the clip, there's a pill at the bottom of the screen with a blue "LED" of sorts. AI loves to put those on websites and clearly in games too

5

u/GoldenGoose120 16h ago

OH lmfao you mean the shape. my dumbass was looking for a literal dr. mario shaped pill capsule. idk enough about ai “content” but good to know!

-17

u/liright 14h ago

They also used Windows 11 to code it. Just a heads up to everyone. Also they used a COMPUTER. The person used a COMPUTER to make the game. And also ELECTRICITY.

-8

u/m0dE 14h ago

I get this reference lol. thanks for being rational

7

u/TheCape6 11h ago

I mean, you didn’t even make it. You asked an LLM to make a game for you and kept adding prompts to change or add things. 3000 prompts is insane.

I’m a developer, I use (my own) AI occasionally to help with programming. Mainly bug fixes and adding safety checks where I forgot to.

It’s low quality and low effort. There’s a reason people pick up pencils to draw, brushes to paint, keyboards to program, etc. The joy is in the making and seeing your hard work come together.

Again, this isn’t your work.

2

u/TheCape6 5h ago

wtf are you talking about lmao

“Antis” like it’s a slur. Art isn’t about the product, it’s about process. If you consider picking up a pencil, a brush, a keyboard, a mouse, clay, a wrench, etc. and the process of using them “suffering”, you’re braindead. You’re acting like you have to be born a special snowflake to learn how to do any of this. Artists ARE special because they actually dedicate themselves to make something for the purpose of making it.

People who use AI to create, don’t actually want to actually make something. You didn’t paint the piece on your wall if you go to Hobby Lobby and ask for home decor.

The beauty is in the people who make and the process they take to do so. Theres a guy making a game out of text. There’s literally no reason to do it other than to just do it. Because it’s fun to make things.

You probably don’t understand what I’m saying because you’re miserable and don’t know how to actually live.

A slur is, by definition, a word that is used in a derogatory manner towards a person/group based on identity.

“Antis” fits that definition as you’re using it in a derogatory manner. I never used a word that targeted your identity.

I must’ve really hit a nerve, because everything I said is… true? If you utilize AI to “create art” you don’t want to actually make something. You want the end-product. Promoting an AI to make a game for you is the same thing as prompting a person to do it. I’m not even saying any of this is a bad thing, it’s just true. I’m not arguing morality.

Also I am employed thank you! I appreciate the concern for my welfare. I’m able to get paid creating art and doing what I love. I do wish you’re able too someday as well, as you obviously are extremely jealous and envious of those that can.

Edit: I’m also not conservative, at all. I’m decently left leaning, I’m just anti-acceleration. I’m very vocal against conservative ideology.

genuinely what the fuck are you on about lmao this is a great thread especially since you apparently can’t type either and respond within a minute of me commenting

My job isn’t volatile, at all, so I have no idea where that came from. I’m assuming calling myself an “artist” is calling myself “special”? Are you conflating being unique and having a disability?

I really don’t care if it reinforced your views. I checked the pinned post on your profile and you’re obviously neurodivergent and mentally unwell. I’m not saying this as an attack, just an observation.

Also nobody is gatekeeping you from picking up a pencil, a paintbrush, a keyboard (obviously this one in particular), etc. Go do it. Go learn. You can’t walk before you can stand and you certainly can’t do calculus before addition.

Edit (since your final point was one AND Reddit added another comment): I thought… I was an anti? I’m confused… are you asking how many people that are anti-AI have I scolded for saying slurs? A good few?

It’s lazy and uninspired.

This, from the clips provided, is a rip off of multiple different games and it doesn’t do any of it particularly well. It doesn’t even come close to the feel, appearance, or concept of Titan on Titan combat, it doesn’t come close to the methodical pacing or map design of battle royals, and to top it off, it’s got the same messy UI that every single AI game has.

I mentioned this in another comment; but AI has no capability to create something new, it can only copy what’s been shown and work from that. Something that can’t create or think critically will never be able to make an original work that exceeds the sum of its parts.

Well the issue here is twofold, one is that AI has no respect for organized code. Many companies have let AI code for them then found out the hard way that when human intervention is necessary, it’s become impossible because of how jumbled the coding is, and either massive sections or the entire codebase has to be scrapped and rewritten to properly function. With that in mind, adding things as a human dev is nearly impossible, it’s easier and faster to just let the AI take the reins and just scrap what you don’t like, which still holds all the issues previously mentioned.

The second is that at a certain point, you’d just ship of Theseus’d a game. Scrapping AI parts and adding your own until it’s something you like means that the AI was just doing the job that your imagination should’ve already been fully capable of. Weeks of iterations and tests are what a game already is. Using a machine that can never perfectly execute what’s in your mind rather than just learning how to create that thing with your own skill is just piling unnecessary resources, time, and effort into something that can never produce the result you want.

Ai isn't slop, its the user not using it properly

1

u/OutcomeSuitable8126 6h ago

Ai is slop. No human made it. It was shit out by a machine under human direction. That is lazy and uninspired and unskilled and sloppy.

1

u/Better_Passage7527 3h ago

If you want to believe that, it's just a tool like a workman is using a drill or a factory is using robots.

14

u/negroBegro29 14h ago

what did YOU actually make in this project?

11

u/Bonk5 13h ago

This looks horrid, not even close to anything titanfall.

7

u/Furry-alt-2709 13h ago

I was like "this looks neat" and then the ui appeared. All of these "Ai games" use the same fucking gray and black box with neon colors.

3

u/orangpelupa 7h ago

where's the titanfall inspiration? even the robot is weightless.

this is very similar issue of pacific rim 2.

10

u/Kaaskaasei BT-7274 1d ago

The concept looks very interesting.

I'm going to wait with trying it out, but I'll tell you, this has potential. (Like TABG had)

It doesnt seem you can jump out of the robot and do shit... I really like that in TF but it s rare in video games

-12

You can.

1

u/Kohel13 13h ago

I m sorry I didn't go that far. I ll check it out

-6

no problem! let me know how you like it. gotta press F. Also you can hop on with your friends in a same mecha too!

Yall gon hate me for this, i love everything about titanfall, except the titans. Multiplayer wise i mean, i enjoy pilot vs pilot combat, titans seem like a nuisance most of the time. Like the vehicles in battlefield. On the other hand, a game with only titans would be super cool.

3

u/ItzzAdan 10h ago

damn this game looks ugly af

3

u/ProjectPlugTTV 1d ago

This looks pretty damn good for a browser game

-1

u/m0dE 1d ago

thanks! let me know how it plays haha

1

u/Furebel The Yeet Seat 19m ago

Ok but what does it have to do with Titanfall? If anything it's a lot closer to Mecha Break

1

u/redditusero_o 18h ago

honestly this feels a bit more like armored core but slower instead of titanfall

-1

u/kaiyuchen 1d ago

This games looks really awesome!

-1

u/m0dE 1d ago

thank you!!

0

u/Intrepid_Travel_3274 13h ago

6.8/10, I like it overall.

I didn't understand what was each piece or what they do or If I needed them.
I hate that you need to look at the item to then press E to pick it up. If there is a Mystic Item on the ground allow me to auto change the common I already have without need to look down and press E.

Need polish but it is a good demo, I wouldn't pay for its condition rn and won't play more than 5 minutes, but it is a good start.

-1

u/m0dE 13h ago

Thank you for the honest assessment rather than dismissing it immediately because people call it a slop.
Those are some great suggestions, I'll look into it!

-1

u/kaiyuchen 1d ago

Looks really nice, now, is there lore?

-5

u/m0dE 1d ago

not yet. I'm primarily focused on gameplay for now.

-8

u/Comfortable_Sand_590 1d ago

This kinda game alr exists, look up war robots on play or app store

0

u/Binary-Trees 14h ago

Yes Granvir is an amazing version of these, but I think its cool to keep doing great stuff like this since the AAA studios honestly flop on mecha games so often.

-1

u/TheNachoSupreme 15h ago

yes, and we should have stopped at Mario. No other platformer game should have ever existed after. /s

-4

u/BobTheDragon3 14h ago

any plans to eventual get this on steam?

-10

u/Derefringence 15h ago

Sick, amazing work OP! And don't let the noise lead you astray, use whatever tools you freaking want

-2

u/m0dE 15h ago

Thank you!

-8

u/m0dE 14h ago

This is going to be an unpopular take, but what's with the AI hate?
Yes, the majority of the game was coded using AI but it still took months and hundreds of hours to hone it right.

I just wanted to share something that's fun and hopefully can be appreciated by this community. It's quite sad to see how it's immediately dismissed just because I used AI to build it.

10

u/pinkstorm23 13h ago

We would rather have an authentic game with no ai vibe coding. Even then, Nothing about this even screams Titanfall besides landing down in a mech. It feels more like you just posted it here so your game could get clicks.

9

u/Bonk5 13h ago

If it makes you feel better: people dislike it because it’s not even remotely close to anything titanfall and looks bland and derivative. Now add to that the fact that it took no skill or knowledge of coding to get it up and running and you have yourself a steaming pile of shit. That why people don’t like it.

6

u/PulpFreeOrngjuce 13h ago

Me personally, I find that AI made stuff always looks, feels and is sloppy. It is the absolute culmination of mediocrity. As much as i am sure you worked hard on this, it still looks nothing like titanfall, the gameplay, weapons, and movement are all completely different. Titanfall 2 is special because it feels incredible to play, the animations are well done and the little details that AI smears over in the name of efficiency are what make it so special! The titans have so much weight and feel so powerful because of all the tiny Lil things that take care and love to make. I respect that you made something and put in work to do it, but i don't respect that it seems you felt AI could substitute real, genuine hard work and creativity. Anyone could make what you have made over and over again by prompting an AI, but there will never be another Titanfall 2 without serious dedication and a deep understanding of what actually makes games like it fun and interesting. I mean you got to ask yourself, what makes your creation different? What makes it stand out? What makes it interesting to look at and play? Based on this trailer, my answer would be nothing, it looks like any other slop that Claude or Copilot can vomit out. Thats the problem at the center of AI creating things, it can't make anything that stands out in a unique way, it can't innovate, it can only remix what already exists with no creativity. Shatter rush has tried to recreate titanfall and while it missed the mark, it tried something fun and unique with its graphics and physical simulation of the destructible environment.

4

u/Cowl_cat 12h ago

Man, you just completely fucking ruined it for me. Pathetic

0
