The first time I saw this, this was the context. The cotton candy is my paycheck.

Thank you for clarifying that the children's voices in the background weren't your paycheck, but indeed it was the candy that disappeared.

it's almost as sad as that video where the monkey is about to eat a banana but the banana falls out of the peal and into the water

They're known as "washing bears" in Dutch and German, and in French "washing rats". Named after this behaviour.

u/kardosrobertkh Aug 11 '22
In hungarian too, mosó+medve = washing (or more accurately washer)+bear
Seems like it's the pineapple situation all over again, where the english language just disregards some very common name to a thing and invents their own version

Naw, it's borrowed from the Algonquin word aroughcun or arahkunem, which means "he who scratches with his hands".
Settlers in the 1600s (notably John Smith, of Pocahontas fame) pronounced it "raccoon". And there you have it.

Another fun fact is that this behavior is hardwired into their brains. When a raccoon that has never been exposed to a body of water like this one finally comes across one, it instinctively puts its food into the water before eating it.
I imagine it's a similar drive to when kids look at a tree and feel an urge to climb it, some sort of leftover urge from when our ancestors lived in the trees.

u/FknRepunsel Aug 12 '22
What is the function of the washing process? Does it actually clean harmful bacteria or something off?
2
u/Nerdfighter1174 Aug 12 '22
I got the fun fact from this podcast. I know they discuss the answer to your question, but I don't remember exactly what they said. The guest is an expert on raccoons with years of experience studying them, so she'll answer it way better than I ever could anyway.

Raccoons are surprisingly clean animals. They wash most of their food if there’s an option.
7
u/jorginhosssauro Aug 11 '22
Sorry to bring this, but they don't wash their food, the thing is that their hands will receive more sensory information when they are wet. They do this to understand better what they are eating.
Of course in this process, the food ends up "washed" but it isn't the original intention.3

Video Transcription:
(00:00) [We see a raccoon, standing on top of some rounded rocks. The background, behind the rocks, is a brown soil, while in front of the rocks we see part of a clear little body of water, delimited by the rounded rocks themselves. The racoon is a little soggy, and a medium-sized white cube of cotton candy is in front of it, also placed on one of the rocks. For the whole duration of the video, we can hear several voices in the background, including the voices of some children, and some other animals' noises.]
(00:02) [The raccoon has grabbed the cotton candy with its mouth, bringing it closer to itself. Now it is also grabbing it with its front paws.]
(00:04) [The raccoon turns, with the cotton candy still in its mouth. This way, the cotton candy is touching the water with its bottom side.]
(00:05) [The cotton candy has slipped from the raccoon's mouth, falling into the water and dissolving in it. The raccoon has placed its front paws into the water.]
(00:06) [The raccoon has now has placed its front paws together, seemingly trying to pull something out of the water. It then looks at its empty paws and throws them into the water again.]
(00:09) [The raccoon is now frantically searching for the cotton candy, throwing its paws into the water and reaching to smell it.]
(00:13) [After sniffing the rocks and moving on them to search on a nearby part of the pond, the raccoon continues to search for the cotton candy, more and more frantically. The camera zooms on its confused face, while it sniffs the water and goes deeper into it.]
(00:16) [End of Video.]

Those little guys are so food motivated that if their food vanishes like that they can have a full on panic attack! Animal cruelty for giving the poor guy that next to a water source knowing they'll try to wash it.

Guys don’t worry, this raccoon is given cotton candy 2 more times, the next time it tries to wash it again and it disappears, but the third time the raccoon learns and just eats the cotton candy.
