Meta's commitment to not ending the world expired right around the quarterly check-in.

This is a little different than you are implying. But still bad! Since you are OP i am gonna reply directly to you. “AI safety” is a specific cult of “rationalists,” versus “AI ethics” which is a long standing and respectable field in AI research. OpenAI and Anthropic are fully enmeshed in the rationalist cult - theyre doing ketamine sex parties trying to build Roko’s Basilisk. Meta is way behind on getting the attention necessary to raise billions in venture capital willing to burn it all on training models. Billionaire VCs who love ketamine sex parties and power fantasies are willing to fund OpenAI and not Meta because Meta isn’t sufficiently into the doomsday ketamine sex cult. Someone at Meta, probably in HR, noted that their recent recruits were harassing women, doing drugs, and weirding out their other employees by talking about the coming AI holocaust and the “chicken versus dodo” problem. Meta wants to be in with the cool
kids but doesn’t want the lawsuits that inevitably stem from putting these absolute freaks into a company that wasn’t founded around catering to them. For more on this check out the recent episode of Better Offline with Ed Zitron and Cal Newport, “The AI Safety Cult.”

I can't find any connection between the named people they hired: Bo Li, Dawn Song, and Sanmi Koyejo, or their company Virtue AI and the rationalists. These are all faculty at reputable institutions.
I'm not a fan of the Rationalist Community, but just because the term "AI safety" was used instead of "AI ethics" does not mean that the rationalists are involved.

Don’t Look Up and Idiocracy are still documentaries.
We also have Peter Thiel telling us evil is “at least effective”.
We’re is a dystopia ran by textbook psychopaths, and everyone still goes to work and shops like it’s nothing. Interesting.

100% this. And we'll continue doing so until it's too late.
Earlier people had the option of simply overwhelming the rich physically - we still do. But that's about to be over. I believe that's when we'll see their true faces.

Individuals with disproportionate amounts of wealth have caused this problem, and begun to distort democracy and society with it. They are nearly entirely unaccountable and able to operate without oversight or responsibility for their actions, with society and state falling over themselves to facilitate and enable the rot they enact.
The only way out of this is the neutering of that power and influence and the removal of that disproportionate wealth to remove their distorting influence.

Yes, wealth does not mean superior intelligence or knowledge of what’s best. It just means you’re good at accumulating wealth, that’s it.

It’s just like their(and most tech companies) climate pledges. They make a promise, do a half assed attempt at fulfilling it, then silently lay off the team responsible but still keep the promise. Thats what big tech is nowadays but sure, they will regulate themselves.

Reminds me of when Meta was warned by internal researchers that they were harming the mental health of teens - and their reaction was too fire them.
Seems like Meta really likes to claim that they are ethical - but don't want to actually be so..

ai safety is apparently just a marketing phase until it gets in the way of shipping faster

this is just another stunt, tech sector is 99% marketing now, they have to produce this dividing discussions to keep going

Was a publicity stunt to hire them . Zuck had no intent of making things safe over profits.

They hired those folks when there was talk of congress actually doing their jobs and regulating this unregulated industry. But since that ain't going to happen they don't need those folks anymore.

Their job was to sign the papers and reassure everyone on social media all is ok. Not to demand changes or taking responsibility. They did not understood their job assignment

I want to see them pay 100s of $billions in lawsuit settlement—so much their board demands Zuch step down

The safety measures developed by humans cannot keep pace with the volatility of AI.

"They kept telling us that what we were doing was dangerous, and we kept telling them that we didn't care, just a simple clash in working style."
