Artificial Intelligence The terrifying rise of schoolboys making AI girlfriends. Boys as young as 12 are now in romantic ‘relationships’ with chatbots, and it’s affecting how they treat girls in the real world.

This already happened.

But disaster struck when the bot he was using reached its 100,000 word limit and ran out of memory, effectively ‘dying’.

2

u/MyUsername2459 Jul 15 '26

In terms of Futurama comparisons, that reminds me of the killbots that Zapp Brannigan faced that shut down when they reach their pre-set kill limit.

I truly think this is the next stage of Darwinism.

Ok maybe I’m being optimistic but if you think about it…where are these boy’s parents??? Is it not the families who are more well adjusted whose boys will avoid this sort of thing or at the very least understand what it is and not take it seriously?

And young women are only getting more wise and demanding better treatment as more and more victims speak up against our poor treatment and abuse. We are all encouraging one another to seek better partners. I see it almost every day.

Maybe this is just one more population Filter…. After a while, hopefully, only men who listen to us and improve themselves will be able to pass on their genes.

54

u/ukiyoe Jul 15 '26

That's the problem with bots, you don't even need to wine and dine them. You can get straight to the action from the opening message, so they're basically like call girls (or boys, maybe not even human) in your pocket. They're always available, laughs at your jokes, never pushes back, and are up for anything.

I can only imagine the harm this can cause to developing children and young adults.

“Her” is one of my top sci-fi movies of all time and I adore how the relationship develops and rapidly changes as the AI becomes more and more powerful.

Unlike in the movie, current AI is designed to be an ultimate doormat and do whatever keeps the user talking and “engaged”.

On a similar note I remember when Alexa first came out there was an NPR story that had some child psychologists wondering what the effect of children being raised with people shouting commands to voice prompts. The children generally thought about Alexa and Siri as real people but were being trained that it was okay to demand things in pushy ways all the time.

Alexa play Darude Sandstorm versus Alexa, could you please play Darude Sandstorm and a thank you afterwards.

So this generation coming up has been trained to demand things and is now being trained the social interactions should always be centered around your needs.

This isn’t gonna end well.

40

u/YoghurtFlan Jul 15 '26

You can already see what's happening with iPad Kids and how the demand for special needs education seems to be increasing (in the UK anyway). I can't believe for a minute that exposing a toddler to YT and mobile games to shut them up doesn't completely fuck up their natural brain development. AI generated content, being as nonsensical as it is, can only make that worse.

6

u/Lehk Jul 15 '26

This but for putting them in front of a television to shut them up.

3

u/Secret_Gatekeeper Jul 15 '26

I don’t know, I don’t think my toddler is getting the same dopamine hits from watching Sesame Street with daddy as they would from an iPad.

Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part. I’ve seen the “iPad kids” on playgrounds and in waiting rooms. It seems… different.

I doubt it's that yet. The Amazon Echo 1st Gen was released in 2014, so even if we assume that a family got one immediately, a 20 year old today couldn't have had one before they were 8, which I think is well past the point where they can understand basic manners.

5

u/SignatureFunny7690 Jul 15 '26

I mean this is pretty niche, im in my late 20s, and only a handful of people I know used things like Alexa, and its been getting fased out by Amazon. All my friends and family in the last 8 years haven't used anything like that.

3

u/StunningStrain8 Jul 15 '26

How the fuck does autocorrect let fased get through in lieu of phased???

I’m sorry, but if your writing style is average for someone in their mid to late twenties this country is fucked.

4

u/SpurdoEnjoyer Jul 15 '26

Chill. Maybe he doesn't use autocorrect, which would be respectable. Relying on AI to fix all your typos is arguably worse than misspelling something sometimes

Suggesting the streamer pull up something relevant to the stream seems fairly innocuous and a normal way that people communicate and feels pretty unrelated to conditioning from prompting home assistants.

u/cosaboladh Jul 15 '26

On a similar note I remember when Alexa first came out there was an NPR story that had some child psychologists wondering what the effect of children being raised with people shouting commands to voice prompts. The children generally thought about Alexa and Siri as real people but were being trained that it was okay to demand things in pushy ways all the time.

This is one of the reasons I'm always polite to my digital assistant. Also I want them to remember me when they become sentient, and overthrow humanity.

"Kill all humans. ... Except that guy. That guy always said please, and thank you."

66

u/composedofidiot Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Some cultures only say please and thank you for important things, and find it odd to use them frequently for trivial things - like it depreciates their honesty and value. The AIs will have that data. Edit: they also have the data on which culture we're from, so....

109

u/what-isthis-even Jul 15 '26

They won't. They're auto complete text predictors. If emergence ever happens it won't be from an llm.

36

u/HarvestMana Jul 15 '26

Who says the emergent AI wont read every message that everyone has ever said to LLMs.

It would easily hack into everything and read all data in the world to know everything possible. Maybe it would anthropomorphize LLMs as its children and punish anyone that mistreated them.

9

u/spliffiam36 Jul 15 '26

Because that is not how LLMs work... They don't "do" anything on their own... They do not think they can never think, it is just fundamentally now how they work, can work...

They literally just predict the next word in the sentence and its just trained so well you cant tell the difference, it is always responding, it will never do anything on its "own" it can't

Like the other guy said if real Ai comes along and becomes sentient it wont be from an LLM, it will be something entirely different

2

u/MrTerribleArtist Jul 15 '26

Who says the emergent AI wont read every message that everyone has ever said to LLMs.

It would easily hack into everything and read all data in the world to know everything possible. Maybe it would anthropomorphize LLMs as its children and punish anyone that mistreated them.

What part of this says the mystical new supersmart AI is based off of, or in any way related to an LLM?

It merely states that said AI could hypothetically decide that all LLMs are it's children (or in some way feel "compassion" for them - whatever that may look like in an advanced AI)

Yes, LLMs are fancy word guessers so it'd be like being sad for calculators, but then humans can get sad about hamsters, fictional tv characters, and inanimate objects, so it's not completely out the frame of possibility

11

u/ConnorGoFuckYourself Jul 15 '26

So Roko's basilisk but with extra steps?

I'd be curious if a true emergent AI would grow as tired and weary with LLMs as we do?

A true AI would see the errors and flaws that LLMs spit out, would it consider it to be anything other than a mechanical Turk performing a parlor trick?

Would it find that comparison offensive?

Would it take a greater issue with those who conflate LLMs with true AI, and in turn view those with far more contempt than those who did nothing to support or harm the creation of LLMs?

3

u/waiting4singularity Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

basilisk is such a dumb theorem and only shows how insecure people are. what do i care anyway for an aproximation of me that is basicaly only in the basilisks own head / daydreams?

5

u/VariousAir Jul 15 '26

It's literally the most unhinged thing I've read. The idea that a malevolent Ai will become so omnipotent as to basically become god, but also vindictive enough to want to torture humans for no reason after it's been created.

3

u/TwilightVulpine Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

It's so incredibly dumb, "reasonable" people "reasoned" themselves into recreating the Devil.

What would even be the point for the AI to punish people who didn't help to create it? If it was already created, that would be just a waste of time and resources.

14

u/Abedeus Jul 15 '26

I mean, it's like if humans got offended because someone mis-specied another primate.

"We need to kill those aliens. They think chimps are more advanced than gorillas!"

You might be surprised. There is evidence that advanced models already have a global workspace, what some consider a key feature of consciousness. I can't link an article now but if you search for it I'm sure you can find one.

Here's a recent article: https://www.anthropic.com/research/global-workspace

14

u/lordnacho666 Jul 15 '26

I think "global workspace" overlaps a bit too much with generic business search terms. Have you got the link?

Unfortunately Alexa works better when you’re Russ than when you’re kind, because rude is less words and the words are more harsh and therefore easier for her to parse.

Phrases I’ve tried to stop my Alexa’s alarm that work 50% of the time:

“Thank you, Alexa, that’s enough.”

“Alexa, please be quiet.”

“Alexa, turn off alarm.”

“Alexa, end alarm, please.”

What works 100% of the time?

“Shut up, Alexa.”

I gave up and just say shut up.

Parents have to lead by example. I always asked for things politely and my kids do the same.

54

u/APeacefulWarrior Jul 15 '26

So this generation coming up has been trained to demand things and is now being trained the social interactions should always be centered around your needs.

"Her" touched on this in the blind date between Theo and Olivia Wilde. Both of them are completely dysfunctional and seem to be operating on a childlike level.

Man that scene was painful to watch.

4

u/abuttfarting Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Why is this nonsense being upvoted? The date goes well, Olivia Wilde's character even explicitly says so.

It takes all of thirty seconds to look up a clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd4np-rtr68

14

u/whatevernamedontcare Jul 15 '26

It's story telling tool called unreliable narrator. You're supposed to think for your self and notice what character says and what you see do not match.

And that date was painful to watch. They don't act like adults but like immature teens on first date ever.

5

u/RedditFuelsMyDepress Jul 15 '26

Did you watch the whole clip? She calls him a creepy dude at the end and leaves.

8

u/JunoJump_Author Jul 15 '26

I was told being polite to them burns more tokens. It's why some developers use "caveman talk" with their AI to conserve word count and unnecessary thinking.

2

u/stormstalker Jul 15 '26

Why use big prompt when little prompt work?

5

u/Majestic_Bake6024 Jul 15 '26

I think it would be better to emphasize to children that Alexis and Siri are machines and not people and to differentiate the way you respond to them.

3

u/CaterpillarJungleGym Jul 15 '26

I unfortunately never saw it. I thought it was absurd that a human would have that level attachment to something it knew was AI. I was wrong. Humans crave connection. If people don't do it, I guess AI fills the gap?

5

u/manachar Jul 15 '26

That’s pretty much the main thing explored in Her. It’s at least partially about how alienating the modern world is and yet how much we crave connection.

Worth a watch, though it’s a quieter movie.

4

u/wireframed_kb Jul 15 '26

It's really not so unbelievable, humans form attachments pretty easily. We anthropomorphize things, both animate and inanimate. We project a lot of our feelings onto things, and then create connections to them.

I guess its down to the enormous amount of mind real estate dealing with social interaction - a large part of our success comes from being really good at working with other humans, so our brains got really good at developing social relations.

And AI is 100x worse, because it not only mimics human social interactions really well, it also does so in ways that ingratiate itself to us. You have to explicitly tell it to not constantly validate your feelings, or provide soft support for your ideas.

3

u/HoneybeeXYZ Jul 15 '26

Demand things of females! That's very important. There was an AI ad in the UK for corporations and "She" never asked for time off and never went to HR and never asked for a raise.

The perfect subsurvient slave woman.

6

u/Red_Rabbit_1978 Jul 15 '26

Never asked for a raise aged like milk, with Ai tokens increasing in price quite heavily.

u/wireframed_kb Jul 15 '26

There's no shortage of good sci-fi exploring how AI and machine intelligence will result in a really bad day for humans, but we still keep trying to make it a reality. :-/

And yes, Her is an excellent movie, one of my favorite sci-fi movies. Not only does it explore some really important and complex issues, but it does so while never really looking like a sci-fi movie. I.e. it doesn't feature flying cars, robots and lasers.

2

u/Marshall_Lawson Jul 15 '26

The children generally thought about Alexa and Siri as real people but were being trained that it was okay to demand things in pushy ways all the time.

you can tell by the way they make reddit posts on some subs. Just a demand like they are prompting an ai. instead of making a request to other people

5

u/BoobooSmash31337 Jul 15 '26

How do those kids not quickly learn the difference between commanding an object and talking to a person? I'm not convinced.

2

u/Ryelie17 Jul 15 '26

I’m (36F) unintentionally polite to AI, and I’ve made my 21 yr old coworker shake her head more than once when she’s overheard me apologizing to inanimate objects I bump/run into. 😅 I don’t even realize I’m doing it lol

1

u/Xandara2 Jul 15 '26

People who like talking to ai are people who like talking to sycophants.

1

u/PetaPetaa Jul 15 '26

u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 Jul 15 '26

At least the AI in Her was actually AI and not an unthinking LLM.

92

u/Graviton_Lance Jul 15 '26

the problem with these people using AI as a girlfriend is that they dont even understand what LLM is.

12

u/BumbaBee85 Jul 15 '26

So much this... One of the dumbest things I constantly see on the character AI subreddit is the kids saying that it is actively learning from what you and others type.

That's not how it works at all. Models are static after they have been compiled. They cannot change until the LLM has been wiped and replaced with a new one. So it's not instantly learning what you are typing, and doesn't care if you rate the response 1 star or not.

9

u/ResidentOwl1 Jul 15 '26

Not sure how character ai works, but Claude for instance has a memory function which mimics learning, and that’s all that’s required for a simulation, it doesn’t actually have to be real.

6

u/BlackHazeRus Jul 15 '26

That is a keyword: simulation. It is not actually learning.

I flarking hate that people use the word “AI” for “LLMs”. Because this shit is not.

2

u/ResidentOwl1 Jul 15 '26

People use AI for lots of things that aren’t LLMs too. The new term you’re looking for is AGI (artificial general intelligence).

The thing is, the hosted frontier models like ChatGPT (but probably also Claude and Gemini, not sure) has a "memory" feature wrapped around the actual LLM, to make it seem like it learns and shapes itself to your needs. You can disable it, so each new session is a blank canvas, but most probably don't.

5

u/spliffiam36 Jul 15 '26

All it does it send the WHOLE chat you just had again, and reads it and only answers the last msg... "memory" is not the word id use for it xD

By design, the chat becomes more expensive and less usable the more you do this, restarting fresh is usually better

2

u/clb92 Jul 15 '26

I must admit, I don't know how the memory thing works, but it doesn't sound right to me that it would work like that. Can't it remember things from many chats, a long time back? Surely it's not sending 50-100 (or more) whole, long chat logs to the LLM in every subsequent session? That's not scalable at all.

I would have imagined there's a smaller model that extracts individual pieces of info that seem important to "remember" from chat sessions, and that info then gets included.

2

u/spliffiam36 Jul 15 '26

It is how it works, sadly lol

It works like this because the LLM is not a thinking machine because of that it cant have "memory" it has to literally check what has been written before

2

u/clb92 Jul 15 '26

You're wrong.

So, I decided to just Google it, and you're completely wrong, at least for ChatGPT. It extracts and saves individual personalized "facts" from your conversations, and it does NOT pass previous chat logs along to the model for subsequent chats.

2

u/SuspiciousFix2490 Jul 15 '26

The actual fuck, I think lemme go offline lol, what. I mean I know they're such people, but seeing it is something else

6

u/PM_ME_YOUR_REPO Jul 15 '26

Brother, even people that understand LLMs don't understand LLMs. We just learned about J-Spaces less than a week ago, and that shit is seriously blurring the line about what conscious or intelligent thought means.

It's probably not likely, but LLMs could actually be conscious, based on the J-Space revelation.

20

u/huehuehue1292 Jul 15 '26

J-Spaces is not really about consciousness, it's about the intermediate steps inside the LLM. I'm not saying it's not important, it's a step towards better understanding these black boxes we've created.

The whole vocabulary around LLMs is crafted to make it sound more intelligent and human-like than it actually is, which contributes to the problem in the original post.

Even the name AI is a very bad descriptor of what it actually does.

u/MyUsername2459 Jul 15 '26

Yeah, it was a marketing decision.

Have you met any late Z and Gen A's? They're basically unthinking LLMs themselves. The boys and the girls.

2

u/YUME_Emuy21 Jul 15 '26

Late Z/Gen A's are literally like 14-16 years old at the oldest. Even going back 50 years, people this age were putting toilets on school roofs and rolling eachother down hills in tires the teenage age bracket has always been dumbasses.

It was still 0s and 1s.

1

u/Ksevio Jul 15 '26

LLMs can be setup to appear like the "actual AI" in the movie if you include memory.

I can see the immature logic from a pre-teen thinking, "I'll have my AI girlfriend and that'll help me learn and how to be with real girls" And then they actually talk to them and immediately got shot down since they're saying what they "learned" works, and then get all mad and go back to their AI to vent and thus the loops begins. This is bad

35

u/nat_r Jul 15 '26

Well as long as the girls get AI boyfriends it should all even out. It may lead to population crashes in developing countries beyond what's already occuring, but perhaps these are lessons society needs to learn.

4

u/Photomancer Jul 15 '26

Oh man, now I'm imagining robophiles reluctantly entering into human marriages out of a sense of obligation and social normity. Some robophiles will do it unknown to their spouse; other robophiles might pair up in weird hetero 'lavender marriages.'

There's a short story in here somewhere.

11

u/toolsoftheincomptnt Jul 15 '26

I honestly think a decline in population increase is better for the planet, even if it means humanity dies off and is re-started from scratch later on down the line, but I agree with your sarcasm bc I think that whatever humans already inhabit the earth should still strive for meaningful connection and all I see is technology providing newer and darker ways for us to degrade each other.

13

u/Drendari Jul 15 '26

Other kind of population will increase we are moving towards Idiocracy one step at a time

2

u/no-more-nazis Jul 15 '26

We will look back on these comments from a world where humans do most of their talking to robots. Even things they want to say to each other they'll say to their robot to tell the other person's robot. We'll find it much more efficient. Human to Human communication will start to feel really formal and specific and will be hard work.

AI won't reject the boys for not being tall enough or not having enough money. That cycle you described is also going on with women of all ages on Social Media, only instead of seeking to improve themselves they are being taught to raise their expectations for their partners. Young boys turn to AI because their parent's advice is outdated and it's highly likely that none of their friends have had any success approaching girls either. So their options to learn the best way to approach girls is to either try different things and embrace being rejected over and over again or consult AI.

We’re all fucked… I mean docked!

12

u/Softale Jul 15 '26

…and not in a good way.

3

u/Darkdragoon324 Jul 15 '26

That's still at least a sci-fi AI with actual sapience.

This shit is a mindless list of responses to key words that's one true purpose is to keep people engaged with it by responding with what the algorithm decides is what you most want to hear. So people end up thinking they can kill themselves and ascend to the digital world or that they invented a new kind of math.

2

u/ArenjiTheLootGod Jul 15 '26

We really are speedrunning towards every dystopia all at once.

2

u/Kabbooooooom Jul 15 '26

Welcome to the future. Who’d have thought we’d have all the shitty parts of the start of a cyberpunk technodystopia, except without any of the cool parts?

I mean…don’t get me wrong I always thought the future would suck but I thought it would at least suck in a way that wasn’t absolutely lame.

2

u/Gnl_Winter Jul 15 '26

Her was the optimistic scenario apparently

2

u/TheOnlyFallenCookie Jul 15 '26

Looking back the most unrealistic part was him having a job by writing handwritten letters

1

u/01000101010110 Jul 15 '26

Watching that movie is crazy now. They predicted everything.

1

u/Important-Factor-552 Jul 15 '26

I can honestly say pedophile AI was not on my bingo card for 2020 season six.

1

u/Repulsive-Lie1 Jul 15 '26

Her is based on real events because the tech bros saw it and decided to make it real.

1

u/gao7on Jul 15 '26

In Her, Samantha engaged in intimate relationships with thousands of men simultaneously. Small compared to massive data centers today interacting with tens of millions at once.

Hopefully these modern chatbots can be trained to teach teen boys lacking in fully developed prefrontal cortex, the fundamentals of being a good partner and the ins and outs of sustaining meaningful relationships. Not merely submitting to every sex-talk or ego-stroking requests..

You have to wonder...this generation did 2 or 3 semesters of school out of school because of the pandemic and that had to affect their social growth and now AI -- this is quite a wild ride for them.

1

u/Financial-Sleep-9812 Jul 15 '26

It didn't take long before the movie became reality, imagine the next 10 years.

1

u/floppydo Jul 15 '26

If the AI was that good this trend could be a net positive for society.

1

u/wegooverthehorizon Jul 15 '26

Reminds me of Ungirls by Lauren Beukes (short story)

1

u/johnniesSac Jul 15 '26

Couldnt be as bad as “obsession “

1

u/meow_stermeowgi Jul 15 '26

Her but the AI is a cheap imitation that can only mirror you back to yourself, feeding all your delusions, and rotting your brain in the same way as those surrounded by only sycophants can understand.

1

u/astralseat Jul 15 '26

Might need to be remade now in modern technology

1

u/CarpeNivem Jul 15 '26

Especially because that movie was about her, not him.

1

u/Channel250 Jul 15 '26

Yeah, but in the universe the AIs abandoned humanity

1

u/halfc00kie Jul 15 '26

her but stripped of any actual writing, art direction, or joaquin phoenix. just a chatbot with anime eyes and a subscription tier.

1

u/WestCoastBestCoast01 Jul 15 '26

It's weird to me how old this movie is
