A perfect storm of happenings has brought a big amount of traffic to our friendly neighborhood sub. We are seriously grateful that so many people want to talk about the series with us; however, with increasing frequency, we are seeing posts and comments of a confrontational nature.
On the face of it, there’s not anything inherently wrong with stating your stance on this game or that film or another. You might like something someone else doesn’t, or dislike something everyone else does, and that’s perfectly okay, because that’s just the way these things go. The problem starts when that criticism begins to justify aggressive rhetoric that either:
- Forgets empathy for the characters and narratives that Silent Hill is known to explore as well as their reflection in the real world, and in doing so, diminishes the pain of those who have lived such experiences personally.
- Upholds negative biases that have created division and heated disagreements about what Silent Hill as a series is “actually about”.
This sub is not your battlefield, it’s for ALL fans of Silent Hill and ALL Silent Hill games and media.
“What about Silent Hill: The Arcade, Book of Memories, etc.?”
ALL of it.
If you like it, dislike it, use it as a coaster; we don’t care. What we care about is respect, and discussing Silent Hill politely. Don’t like Homecoming? No problem, but don’t make someone feel bad because they like it. Think The Short Message is an insult to the franchise? Just say you don’t like it (or better yet, keep it to yourself). Think Christophe Gans should be banned from directing? Say it somewhere else. More importantly, be aware of how your words affect those who identify with certain aspects of Silent Hill, namely the struggles the games depict.
There’s a golden rule we stand by here on [r/silenthillrevival](r/silenthillrevival):
“If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all.” Or at the very least, say it in a way that doesn’t make someone ashamed for who they are, what they’ve experienced, or what they enjoy. If you can’t do that, we will do it for you.
Finally, we are introducing a new rule: Confrontational posts and comments will be removed.
There’s no need to “defend” or “attack” anything here. You like it or you don’t; simple as that. When you choose to respond to someone’s post/comment, DESCRIBE why you don’t like it, or don’t, if you think it will come across as insensitive/unkind. But either way, if it falls short, we will let you know.
TLDR:
1. When you don’t like something, don’t make anyone else feel like less for enjoying it or identifying with it.
2. Confrontational posts/comments will be removed, period. Be cool or begonathan.
As always, let us know if you have any questions. Thanks!
