He has multiple jobs that pay well.

Yep he has the Tigers, Sunday night baseball, NBA on NBC, and NBC college football. He is minimum 3x more expensive than the top end of what Dundon would be willing to pay.

God bless Jason but I highly suspect he will not take this job

Sure would be nice if they just paid Kevin “Fucking” Calabro

I still don't get this. How much could they have possibly saved, and how would it be worth losing a legend and putting the team in this position? I've been somewhat more understanding of the layoffs/changes than most, but this one was especially baffling.

You are talking about a man who has decided not to pay for the blazers dancers hair or makeup. They have to now pay for their own styling.

Seriously? It’s gonna be death by a thousand cuts with this guy.

8

u/Mackal 1d ago

Right? He’s literally the voice of the Blazers organization communicating with the viewers. When you have the best guy, you raise your profile. I also get cutting costs but you’re losing value by being cheap here.

A lot of people feel Calabro is closer to terrible than the best. I'm glad he's moved on so we don't have to hear his endless rambling about everything but the game going on in front of him. I just wish the transition came without the obligatory drama.

Rage bait.

u/Boxinggandhi 1d ago

I heard on the radio that he only wanted to call like 30 or 40 games this year.

u/DamperBeet746 ripcity 1d ago

Exactly. He was one of the best announcers in the league.

the amount of dorks who didn't care for Calabro on this board is surprising (but not really).

a true consummate professional, well respected by colleagues and players.

u/icecream_for_brunch 1d ago

he’s a top ten all time nba play by play man and whoever replaces him will be a big step down

3

u/novasilverpill 1d ago

but he forgot somebody's name! he can't talk to the audience like he's their bro, you know, like Pat McAfee.

-1

u/s_m_t_x 1d ago

Everyone respects him, just not sad to see him go.

1

u/novasilverpill 1d ago

see, there are many, if not a majority of the fans, that are sad to see him go.

meanwhile, we would not be sad to see many of the posters in this subreddit leave the entire Internet altogether

-2

u/s_m_t_x 1d ago

I understand that people are sad to see him go, I just disagree. You on the other hand want people who aren't sad, to leave the sub, hahaha!

How fucking lame is that. Jesus fucking christ, grow up. Sometimes people will disagree with you, it's not the end of the world, you don't have to cry to mommy to make the bad words stop...just grow a pair (or lady pair) and realize people have different tastes and opinions. But yeah, since one out of a thousand things you disagree with...ban em! Git em outa ear! Git!!! FFS 🤦‍♂️

I'm sorry if I've offended your eyes with horrible words I've written though. Hope you can recover.

I don't understand the love of calabro he was mediocre at best I'd rather they bring Demer up than go back to calabro

u/mosparky15 roy 1d ago

Agreed!

3

u/ILikeTheTinMan83 1d ago

In his prime he was great but the last couple years calabro was definitely starting to slip and Lamar would have to cover for him when he messed up names etc

0

u/computationalanarchy 1d ago

Am I the only one that noticed he called Deni "Ahd-via" instead of Avdija all season?

3

u/mosparky15 roy 1d ago

I agree, I never saw the huge appeal from some for Calabro. I liked Mike and Mike better (and I didn't even really like Mike Barrett that much!). But I have to admit that Lamar is much better than Rice was his last few years...

Bro people here gargle him so hard I don’t get it. He’s fine but people treat him like a god.

He consistently messed up player names and said stats that were just play incorrect. I like Lamar but honestly at the end of the day the tv commentators I don’t care that much who they are.

u/BehavioralSink Cash Considerations 1d ago

Is he a great fit? Yes. Should he have to work for El Cheapo? Hell no.

u/lavarballishere 1d ago

JB is the best

u/TopSpecialist569 1d ago

Awesome dude and amazing broadcaster. He’s got the main MLB on NBC job, can’t imagine a world where he wants a subprime paycheck to live not in the Midwest where he is from.

3

u/waterkisser 1d ago

That would be awesome, but there's no way Rl Cheapo can afford him.

This is the dream but it’s never gonna happen :(

Dundon too cheap to pay for him.

Jason Benetti would be amazing but no way do we get him more than a game or two filling in I think. Especially with the overlap with baseball in the spring.

1

u/StrikingEconomics255 1d ago

Let's not forget that the blazers pay for next to nothing on rent, no upkeep, keep all basketball revenue, plus 100m of non basketball revenue

Who?

u/Flimsy_Friend_5561 1d ago

psh hire Tony Romo

-13

u/Fun_Lifeguard2437 1d ago

Please god no. When he filled in for Kevin I have never seen more awkward exchanges from a commentator in my life.

I'm really starting to wonder about this subs taste. 1st, get the fuck over KC not being here. He wasn't really that great or invested in PDX. He had to be talked into staying for another contract post covid, he wanted to quit.

Jason, was the worst most awkward thing I've seen when he subbed for KC. I had to watch the other teams stream. It was so bad even Lamar was confused and couldn't save it.

Hopefully whoever they hire is better than either of them.

2

u/OregonJedi 1d ago

Are you confused on who he is? He and Lamar had fantastic chemistry together and seemed to really enjoy working together.

-1

u/s_m_t_x 1d ago

Not confused at all, thought it was terrible. Almost as bad (in a different way) as Jordan Kent was... almost.

I remember the dude didn't even talk basketball for like an entire quarter, Lamar kept trying to get things back on track, but he wasn't having it.

1

u/OregonJedi 1d ago

Wow! Well he did do quite a few games over the last two years so I guess the one you saw was weird.

0

u/s_m_t_x 1d ago

Until reading more about him here I only knew him from the times he filled in. It makes sense that he's a baseball guy, because he was calling the Blazers like baseball games. Which wasn't great. Even in a blowout KC at least kept it somewhat on track, when he remembered who was on the team that is.

1

u/OregonJedi 1d ago

Huh… Well fair enough to each their own! Thought he was without question far and away the best fill in we had and had actual chemistry with Lamar lol

1

u/ejiggle 70s-logo 1d ago

I'm with you dude, Calabro hasn't been good in 15 years.

1

u/mrmittens85 1d ago

Whole sub is wrong and you're the only one who has good taste, I assume. Lol, sad.

0

u/s_m_t_x 1d ago

It's not the entire sub, just a really loud part. Lots of people didn't understand why he was here or want him when he was hired. Lots of people were indifferent when he almost quit 5 years ago...but now, now it's a HUGE fucking deal, haha...why is that?

Oh yeah, cause Tom was part of it. Recent revisionist history is a bitch, and we're seeing it play out in real time. KC has been checked out for years, he now has a part time job, which is what he wanted all along, so good for him.

As I said, he wasn't terrible, but acting like his last couple of seasons were great, is just completely false. Take off your rose garden tinted glasses and see it for what it is.

You have an old head, getting paid more than anyone in the league, that doesn't want to call all the games, doesn't want to move to PDX, has been regularly making big mistakes for years, and still wants to get paid more than anyone else. Signing him to a multi year contract is stupid...but everything Tom does is bad, so grab the pitchforks.

Yeah, Tom is an asshole and fucked up a bunch of things already. This isn't one of em. Not only do I get it, I fully supported it.

u/SeismicRipFart 1d ago

Sorry was this sub in charge of that decision without me realizing?
