Discussion I Love How Non-Elitist The Zomboid Community Is

4.0k Upvotes

GIF Unrelated

Every community for these difficult, crushing, unfun for a mainstream audience type of games have the most toxic communities who take their faux accomplishments super seriously and if anyone deviates from their puritanical gameplay style, they get dog piled. Just look at any Dark Souls community where you'd get belittled for struggling with a boss

Project Zomboid fits that mold to a T, but doesn't fall into that elitist framework that the others have. I've seen so many posts asking "Is it okay to debug remove this infection given the circumstances?" And the replies are always "Whatever you wanna do man, just have fun"

It's really refreshing to see a community for a hardcore game be on the side of having fun rather than gatekeeping the game

It's so refreshing, thanks to everyone here!

Discussion Zombie Collision Fix

5.8k Upvotes

Hey everyone. I've tried to fix one of the things that annoy me the most when getting chased, which is when a zombie phases through one another. There might be a good performance reason why the devs didn't implement it but here it is, seems to perform well locally with 200+ other mods.

Click here to check out my mod! (steam workshop)

Edit:
Updated
-Added sandbox settings to allow users to customize collision behavior.
-Added 11 languages (AI made) to the sandbox settings.

[B42 SP] Halflings: Attack of the kiddo zombies is the mod. I actually love this it adds so much immersion to the game!

Steam Workshop::[B42 SP] Halflings: Attack of the kiddo zombies

This mod as well!

I showed off the Zombie Children mods earlier and did some editing this morning. I managed to make living Child NPC's...not sure if I want to release it or not thoughts?

I'm adding living NPC children to Project Zomboid. They can spawn as both allies and bandits!

Discussion People are review Bombing the game On steam because the Online Map being gone

Really, what is wrong with you guys? The game had and overwhelmingly positive rating of I think 97%. Now it has 93% and very positive. Putting a negative review for a game because a website that isn't even part of the game directly gets shut down is actually just ridiculous.

(Edit: Apparently it was a "Disruption", but y'all most likely saw the reddit post. Maybe the people will change the negative comments regarding the map)

Discussion VR experience made me finally understand the Panic Moodle.

Post image
5.7k Upvotes

I’ve been familiar with the concept of zombies for many years. I’ve played a ton of games, including Zomboid, and watched a bunch of movies about them. They don't scare me, not even nominally... Except for a recent event.

Recently, I decided to download The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. I’m a long-time VR player, so it feels like a second skin to me, and as I said, zombies themselves don’t frighten me. But as soon as I finished the tutorial and got let into the game, the first thing I experienced when meeting a zombie was... Panic... Absolute panic.

Again, I'm an avid VR player, but when you meet them in a reality, even if it's virtual, it's truly terrifying. They just keep coming at you without stopping, they corner you, grab you, the knife goes into the head but doesn't reach the brain, gets stuck, breaks, you panic even more, try to save yourself, grope around for anything, grab a pistol, shoot back, there are even more of them now, you try to run, it doesn't work, you're cornered, you literally start praying to somehow make it out, and... you get eaten alive... This is the most emotional experience I’ve had in a long time.

Damn it, now I 100% understand those "idiot" characters from TWD, or the character in Zomboid who constantly panics at the sight of one or two infected. And this incident made me think that if a zombie apocalypse actually happened, believe me, all of us "tough guys" who are supposedly experienced would absolutely shit our pants, both literally and figuratively. We would die from the very first zombie, simply out of fear and panic.

I know that not everyone who reads this will truly get what I mean, and I'm telling you, you can only understand it if you experience this on yourself. Believe me, my words don't describe even one percent of the experience I went through. Well... Or am I just easily impressed?

Discussion Statement Against The Usage Of Generative AI On PzWiki

2.5k Upvotes

Wiki administrator here.

Lately we've been seeing an increase in the usage of AI in editing PZwiki. While we appreciate the fact that people want to contribute, I want to remind any prospective editors that the usage of AI in ANY CAPACITY is NOT ALLOWED for ANY REASON. This includes AI powered spellchecking tools, LLMs, chatbots, AI generated text that was subsequently modified by a human, AI image generation, or any other AI related content or model that exists now and that may exist in the future.

AI is a major threat to text based communities such as wikis and forums. They are also not aware of our style guide, editing procedures, or user group permissions. They are also prone to outfitting false data.

We have been lenient on this lately because we understand most users simply want to help. However, if usage continues to increase and our rules are not followed, we may be forced to adopt stricter rules and administrative actions.

The AI Policy is explicitly mentioned at the bottom of the editing interface in bold. There is no excuse for "not seeing it."

Our full AI Policy as it stands can be viewed here: https://pzwiki.net/wiki/PZwiki:AI_policy

If you wish to edit the wiki, that's great. Frankly we really need the help right now. But the usage of AI is lazy, not transparent, dishonest, and 100 percent a way to have all your edits rolled back. In severe cases, repeated usage of AI is an IP bannable offense. Fortunately we have not had to ban any users because of this.

Discussion ZOMBIES MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE

Post image
10.0k Upvotes

I understand that the whole premise of the game is to be realistic and gritty and that you are not the main character but how the FUCK does a zombie with decaying body , rotten muscle, eroded teeth and no fuckin brain able to bite through 4 layers of clothes a bulletproof vest and a fuckin knight armour.

I mean the game falls Into the dilemma of most zombies fiction, that is how the zombies don't decay and rot within the first year of the infection but that's beside the point

Discussion Potential ramification of unchecked AI usage in the workshop

2.6k Upvotes

Bumping up against rule 11 here so it's okay if it's too much but I feel it warrants a discussion/call out. This is a pretty rampant issue across the workshop and not limited to any one creator (Or JUST thumbnails)

So I saw a new solar mod on the workshop and it'd stacked up a whole lotta high ratings. I was interested until I looked closer...

927 MB!?

That file size was a huge red flag so I inspected a little closer

Oh, they just accidentally left embedded textures on? Wrong...

Every model here is nearly 2 million polys. Too many of these visible in the same area in game and your performance is going to TANK. Zomboid (and most games) aren't built for this. (For reference, most Zomboid models are <1,000 polys)

And a closer inspection of the models with textures:

You don't even wanna see the UVs...

AI is pretty widespread across the workshop... from thumbnails alone that much is obvious. At this point that's not going anywhere but I personally feel there needs to be a larger pushback against this level of quality negligence ~ to the point that it's malicious to your the game's performance. Less technically literate users that install these will suffer.

Here's another lovely one from a coffee mod:

Every drink in this mod has a model. 2 million polys each.

A flamethrower that'll set more than zombies on fire:

Edit: Someone asked what the UVs look like:

x4096 btw

Pretty much the title.

I spend a lot of time browsing [r/7DaystoDie](r/7DaystoDie) which is another very popular zombie sandbox, and compared to how negative and toxic people are in discussions there, this place is like a warm hug from a sweet stranger. And it seems many people here feel the same.

Every day I see new players getting friendly and helpful advice, and that Makes me very happy :)

Also here’s a picture of my late game base build to grab attention lmao. (The spikes are from the Cheval De Frise mod on the workshop)

Cheers!

What even IS this game? lmao. I thought I was gonna make a lovely character, have a pretty vegetable garden and hold out until I "beat the game". All these years I thought zomboid was some carefree game like plants vs zombies. My naivety cost my poor girl her life lol. I'm in this for the long run.

Gameoneer team, behind one of the biggest survival game news sites, has revisited Project Zomboid, and the new score is 9.2 out of 10:

Project Zomboid has continued to evolve over the years and remains a genre-defining zombie survival game that pushes the boundaries of depth and realism.
