No Paywall Trump shares meme labeling Obama, not Nixon, as ‘most corrupt president’

Here's the thing, Nixon's corruption doesn't hold a candle to Trumps.
•
u/JayR_97 United Kingdom 4h ago
Yeah, what Nixon did wouldn't even register if Trump did the same thing
•
•
u/JaronJervis 2h ago
Trump had his ex wife beat to death and placed at the bottom of a stairwell to make it look like an accident. Then buried her on a golf course. He's a horrible person, He's the worst Politician in American history, he got into politics for selfish reasons, and is now exposed as a rapist, pedo, murderer, war criminal, world wide scammer and a bunch of other things too numerous to list.

It's always projection with this guy. Every accusation is a confession.
It's really all they have left as a strategy. Apparently the idea is borrowed from Joseph Goebbels.
Mucchielli described accusation in a mirror as imputing to the adversaries the intentions that one has oneself or the action that one is in the process of enacting. Mucchielli explained how the perpetrator who intends to start a war will proclaim his peaceful intentions and accuse the adversary of warmongering; he who uses terror will accuse the adversary of terrorism.

Trump probably has done the same exact thing with his state voter role and DOGE stuff. 10x over.
•
u/TaterForming 3h ago
I'm more than sure we could pick something he's going to do tomorrow and it would have had Nixon's ass in jail.

Donald Trump commits more crimes in a week than Nixon did in his career.

Trump has every President beat on corruption by a long shot. Nixon was comparatively an amateur.
•
u/BlueFlob 3h ago
Collectively, all former presidents barely register on the amount of corruption and illegal acts performed when compared to trump.
•
u/MaximumEffort433 Maryland 4h ago
Here's the thing, Nixon's corruption doesn't hold a candle to Trumps.
Nixon: "Fake electors and an insurrection? Really? And the party didn't vote to convict you? I was born in the wrong era."

Much like my heart has warmed to G.W. Bush... So too is it now warming to Nixon.

Trump's averaged a watergate a week, but the right wing media ecosystem is robust enough to convince a critical mass of the public to not give a shit or that violating the law is actually leadership.

Heres the thing, Trump can just demand Google, oracle, and Microsoft or other technology companies to hand over any data to him. Heck DOJ would instantly handle that request.
When the government is at the Beck and whim of Trump, nothing is off limits

I’m always curious how people make the decision to use possessive apostrophes like you did with Nixon’s, but not with Trump’s.
•
u/renegadetoast Virginia 3h ago
Could have been on mobile and some words get autocorrected. Of I type Nixon's without capitalizing or using punctuation, my phone automatically corrected it. It doesn't do that if I type trumps.
•
u/Rascals-Wager 3h ago
Hedge your bets and put an apostrophe in one possessive noun but not the other lol
Broken clocks and all that, right?

u/OneSeaworthiness7768 4h ago
I don’t recall any other president in my lifetime talking about other presidents this much while in office, or even at all. Much less complaining about and disparaging them the way he does. Trump is such a fucking weak loser.
•

Other presidents at least tried to pretend like sane and rational adults.

So much of late 20th century and current 21st century politics can be explained by the South never getting over losing the Civil War and Republicans never getting over Nixon's crimes.
Reactionary+Revenge=Republican
•
u/hammonjj 4h ago
More like never being punished for the civil war. The north should have gone scorched earth on the south and now, because they didn’t, we have this mess to deal with.
•
u/FantasyBaseballChamp 3h ago
100%. The Union should’ve done a denazification-style campaign, but instead let them run wild with their Lost Cause narrative for over a century. Now we’re stuck in a seemingly inescapable state of cold civil war.

Hanging Jefferson Davis as a start
•
u/TheOtherMaven Virginia 22m ago
There were musical "threats" to that effect, starting about mid-1861. One of the "John Brown's Body" variants included the verse:
We'll hang Jeff Davis from a sour apple tree We'll hang Jeff Davis from a sour apple tree We'll hang Jeff Davis from a sour apple tree As we go marching along.(By mid-November 1861 Julia Ward Howe revised it into the familiar, and much more dignified, "Battle Hymn of the Republic".)

That was Lincoln's plan post 2nd Manassas and he executed that plan. McClellan stumbled around in Antietam and almost lost. He wrote a letter to Lincoln that summer before absorbing Popes Army essentially telling Lincoln to maintain a limited war.

scorched earth on the south
That's a funny way of advocating for genocide.
•
u/hammonjj 3h ago
Who said anything about murder? The southern army committed treason against the US. It’s just punishment for their crimes.
•
u/HiddenRouge1 3h ago edited 3h ago
Read what you said. Do you have any idea what "scorched earth" entails? And you want to do that over the whole South?
•
u/hammonjj 2h ago
I’ll be more clear. The north should have judicially gone scorched earth on the south.

There's no single metric by which Obama could be argued to even be among the top half of presidents in corruption.
And however corrupt Nixon might have been, even if you want to argue he was the second most corrupt president (he almost certainly wasn't), he isn't even close to being in the same vicinity of Trump's level of corruption, which frankly is unprecedented in this country's history.
I don't mean his corruption is unprecedented "for a president." Though of course it is.
Trump is far and away the most corrupt human being this country has ever produced. And I'm not sure it's close.

•
u/guttanzer 2h ago
This is true, but Nixon was up there. If you listen to the tapes you hear a guy that routinely engaged mob figures to get stuff done. As far as I know, no other president other than Trump has been that tight with the mob. His VP Spiro Agnew was a real piece of work too.
Reagan stands out because he had the CIA smuggling drugs to fund an illegal war. He also sold missiles to Iran that he could assume would come back at US troops someday. That's on another level; Nixon waged war in Cambodia, but it was all at least semi-legal in the context of an ongoing proxy war with North Vietnam.
Then there is President Cheney and his sidekick George W. Bush. Does the oil industry qualify as an organized crime syndicate? If so, the entire cabinet was staffed with syndicate bosses.
Other than those I can't think of any seriously corrupt presidents. Ford was relatively on the level Johnson wasn't shy about twisting people's arms with blackmail, but I don't think he had to manufacture any. He was just really well connected. Carter was a frick'n boy scout.
Clinton was remarkably clean for a president; slick willy was a notorious womanizer but in the legal/political world he was amazingly good at talking people into things. Obama and Biden too, without the womanizer part. All were savagely investigated by Republicans on the hill and all came up pretty damn clean. Remember Watergate? Benghazi? Hunter's laptop? All three were flogged for years in hearings, and all three came up as big nothing burgers.
All of them, including Nixon, look like frick'n choir singers compared with Donald J. Trump. He doesn't bother with ordinary domestic organized criminals. He likes to hang out with global tough guys like Putin, Xi, Netanyahu, and Kim. Oh, and the billionaire/trillionaire set that pay him millions under the table.

How specifically could Obama be considered a corrupt president?
Of the past 10 presidents going back to Nixon, I think Carter was the least corrupt, and then you got Obama. Biden is probably next in line, though I think him pardoning his son, which I understand in the context of the current Insanity of trump, I still think shouldn't be able to happen.
Ford should have never fucking pardoned Nixon. If he hadn't we might have ended up with some accountability in this country to rogue presidents. Clinton was a sleaze bag, who preyed on women, and frankly I wish you had been removed from office, because again maybe we could have set a precedent for accountability from our leaders. Bush Sr, was mired in Iran Contra before he even came to office, then pardoned his co-conspirators. Bush Jr, was a shit show of corruption, from Valerie Plame affair, to the firing of attorney general's, to Halliburton and VP Cheney, to the blatant lying that dragged us into the Iraq war. Then you've got Reagan with Iran–Contra, the HUD scandal, October surprise,a ridiculous amount of convicted people coming out of the administration, and even the fact Reagan cheated in the debates with Carter.
Then you got Nixon.
Anybody who thinks that Obama is more corrupt than Nixon is just objectively disconnected from reality.
And last but not least Trump.
Trump is more corrupt than Nixon and that is a really tough thing to do.

He slways confirms which descriptions get under his skin. ‘I’m no a puppet. You’re a puppet. Dude is fragile and transparent. Obama is still more popular than him and he has been out of office forever. He is still pissed about the correspondence dinner roast. Still pissed he doesn’t have a Nobel. And he knows he is not beloved by any stretch of the imagination which is why he tries to hammer his name on a memorial of a president that was beloved and why he is building monuments to himself during this term because nobody but the dregs of his cult will have fond memories of the guy who debased the White House by being caught on tape trying to steal 11000 votes, the golden sneaker and NFT salesman, the fake elector co-conspirator and on and on.
No historian is buying what this guy is selling and only amplifies his reign of multiple crimes and corruption
