Possible Paywall Confused Mitch McConnell, 84, Has to Be Told How to Vote

In Kentucky? If he had resigned three months ago, his seat would either have already been filled by whichever bigot was willing to publicly fellate Trump the hardest, or else would be left vacant for the rest of the term while the utter trainwreck of state laws is slowly contested. There was no world where a milquetoast centrist Democrat would have been seated before Barr takes the seat in January, yet alone a progressive.
77
u/angrymoppet 18d ago
Kentucky's governor is a Democrat and it would have been a seat filled by him until an election. The Republican legislature actually illegally passed a law removing this ability for him, which conflicts with the state constitution.
→ More replies (4)53
u/BigNorseWolf 18d ago
Republicans saw their gerrymandered state legislature couldn't save the governership so removed that power from the governor, however the method they used to do so is worse than questionable (they used emergency powers. The other political party winning an election is not usually considered an emergency)

Kentucky ain’t voting in anyone that isn’t a republican. I think Massie would have (unfortunately? fortunately?) have a decent shot though, and he’s very anti-Trump.
EDIT: for anyone else that wants to play the “BuT tHe GoVeRnOr Is A dEm” - Kentucky gubernational is on off years. The previous governor was absolutely horrible, and Beshear still barely won. And because he didn’t do a completely shit job (and the GOP put up an even dumber candidate than in 2019) he won reelection.
Now if your argument is “he can appoint a replacement” then sure… but any appointment is going to be contested in court and guess who controls the state courts. Regardless, the replacement will only be seated after a lengthy court battle so I guess it’s like he’s still dead. Better to focus on the very much winnable senate elections in other states that are currently going on

Guess they think that's worth a little elder abuse. He probably had it in his advance directive: "If I become incapacitated, if at all possible get me out to the Senate, even if you have to have someone basically puppeting me."

Republicans might have to give up a tiny sliver of power!
This is incorrect. Mitch McConnell isn't just any senator. He's one of the most senior and well-connected Republicans in office who isn't literally the president. Giving up Mitch would mean losing those connections, and giving up a lot more than that "tiny sliver" of power. Republicans are delaying that inevitability as much as possible and I'm sure behind the scenes they're moving to preserve as many of those connections as possible.

Honestly "both sides" is perfectly valid criticism so long as it isn't being used as a shield. "Both sides do this and it's bad" is valid, "both side do it therefore it's okay" isn't.
Elected officials should be held to a higher standard of conduct than "the other guy isn't any better".

Multiple black women were IMPRISONED for voter fraud and in almost every case they did something like file a provisional ballot on the advice of the poll worker because they weren't sure of their voting right status.
Meanwhile, almost every single actual case of real voter fraud (like voting on behalf his dead wife "because she wanted it" and then going on a national media tour crying that some Democrat must have used his dead wife for voter fraud) received no jail time whatsoever.
Crystal Mason: Texas mother who faced 5 years in prison has illegal voting conviction reversed | CNN
Las Vegas man who voted twice using dead wife’s ballot pleads guilty, avoids jail time
“That is pretty sickening to me, to be honest with you,” Hartle said in an interview then with KLAS 8 News Now. “It was, uh, disbelief. It just — it made no sense to me.
Im pretty sure this last guy is the one that went on all the national conservative networks talking about how someone used his dead wife to vote (implication being it was the Democrats).

black women
You mean Crystal Mason? The Black lady in Texas? (she was finally acquitted in March 2024)
Or are you talking about Pamela Moses, the Black lady in Tennessee, who was sentenced to 6 years in prison for registering to vote while on probation?
In both cases, they were not properly informed of their rights (or lack thereof) and in the latter case,
a probation officer with the Tennessee Department of Corrections even filled out and signed a certificate confirming her probation had ended.
Charges were eventually dropped against Moses, but she still served 82 days in prison and can't register or vote

They are allowed to vote. They can be helped with their ballot by anyone except their employer or union rep. It's not up to the poll workers to decide who is competent to vote. If they are registered, they get a ballot.

Had a parent with a TBI from hitting their head and/or falling. The exact cause is unknown as no one was around to witness it so the sequence is only a best guess from the superficial physical injuries that were also present.
Their appearance during early recovery was very similar to McConnell's - lights are on, but no one is home. You could hold a conversation of sorts, but there were no memories, no critical reading, no intelligence.

My pity well is bottomed out. Mitch McConnell has done more harm than just about any man in the 21st century. His being used like this is exactly what he wanted and deserves. This is his legacy. He could have been the man that saved us from Trump instead he chose this. Mitch McConnell right now is the perfect representation of what the husk of our nation has become because of men like him. He'll be used like this until he dies, a fitting end for a man that's condemned us all to the same.

The fact that the US "democracy" has no actionable clause that prevents someone mentally unfit for their position in their seat of power is just straight up insane.
How can people genuinely believe they're the "leaders of the free world" and that they "bring democracy" to other countries, however funny the previous statements, when they can't even directly vote for their own president.
Worse, the first time that the US democracy was genuinely tested it failed so spectacularly that a racist pedophile managed to be elected after already killing tons of people in the pandemic and is 100x more crooked than Nixon himself.
Well, at least, with Trump in power, more people from the US and around the world can see the joke that the Evil US empire was and always has been.

The moment a senator needs aides whose main job is to focus on the senator's health (mental or physical) they should be removed immediately. Sorry, but you have to be able to actually think to be someone else's representative.

I disagree with the physical part. I don't give a fuck what a senator can or can't do with their body. I want a MIND at work. And, preferably, a conscience.
Tammy Duckworth is one of the most badass senators of our time, and she only has one fully working limb. I'd have been thrilled if Stephen Hawking was a Senator. I don't care if you need aides to help you physically get thru your days. But I care a hell of a lot when a shadowy group of aides, whom no one elected, plays marionette on one of the most important stages in the world.

TBF the people who voted for him don't think, so he's truly one of them now.

Is it rude of me to hate and make fun of him while he's in this state? Despite all the shit he's done

No, I think he is getting the punishment he earned. I hope it's uncomfortable, confusing and scary. The same things he made millions of people feel. He is getting what he deserves.. is it cold, yes Callous even, absolutely... Exactly like he was to millions in life.

I'm horrified at how much time they must have spent to train him to smile and give the thumbs up.

No. He wanted this. He would rather be a meat puppet voting republican than ... whatever the alternative is. Pile it on

No, it's a funny and ironic punishment.
He's had control his entire miserable life and now Death is dragging his death along as long as possible, like most of Bitch McConnell's entire political career.
Haha is all I can say. Who knew Death was a great stand-up (no pun intended) comedian?

This is the real reason he never made a video while he was recovering from whatever it was he had going on. It wasn’t because he was “dead” like all the conspiracy theorists were saying. Mitch is simply severely cognitively impaired and the fact they’re still parading him around like he can properly do his job is insane.

For all the terrible he has done over the years the sliver of hope that I’m holding onto is that he’s maybe suffering through all of this. Maybe he dies a few days before he is out of office so he never knows any peace.

Someone should force a cognitive test on him.
He voted no, it should have counted. Having to be reminded what your vote ‘should’ be, live, during the vote, should be grounds for disqualification.

Republicans owe Joe Biden an apology. With both Trump literally falling asleep and now with McConnell.
Which is not to say that Biden didn't have a lot of senior moments, but they weren't nearly as bad as what we are seeing now.

It would be hilarious to see the looks on the Republicans’ faces if he started voting opposite of what he normally would. What would they do?

This is about what I expected. He's alive, but clearly way too physically compromised to be a part of government

Well, this seems blatantly illegal.
If someone brought their grandma with dementia down to the voting booth and helped her through the voting process when she clearly had no idea what was going on, these same ghouls would claim tampering.

The country is in the hands of the corporations telling our politicians how to vote, at one time financially but now literally. we need the “dont tread on me” group to join the right side which will never happen. We are fucked on a sinking ship full of idiots. Im living in the hell of the worst timeline.
