Arts/Crafts I found painting at 40. A year later, I painted this to capture my feelings about it.

So when you say you picked it up at 40 is this after a lifetime of painting other things or doing other art? Because if I picked this up and showed what I came up with a year later you would think I was showing you my toddler’s scribbles.
Very impressed, you’re super talented and I hope it’s bringing you joy that only creation can.

Where’d you find it? I lost mine at a drink and draw.

Hahaha yours must be humor

Only kind of.
I picked up painting like 15 years ago and was really into it. And then the spark faded. Then picked up again 7 years ago. And then I lost my drive right around the time I did a social art thing and felt thoroughly uncomfortable and out of my depths. I literally lost it. Have no desire and it’s kind of disappointing to be honest.•

Well I wish I had advice for you. It took a major health scare coupled with midlife crisis to spark the flame for me.
Maybe take a night class? I have taken three and love the people I have met.

Not a bad idea to do a night class... could be a good reason to get out of the house. Thanks!
Wish you the best! Keep going!

Ohhh wow. When I was young people said I looked like J phoenix. Right after gladiator. So interesting.
I loved art up until 3rd grade. Then it wasn’t cool. Then it hit was a waste of time. Then it wasn’t safe. Now, IDGAF

Very cool!! Did you have any artistic skills already? Or like creative work?
I had a friend that was 80yrs old that woke up one day and started painting these wild and beautiful Native American images. He was an old hillbilly from a holler in west virginia kentucky. I think he built and worked on clocks and watches when he was younger. But otherwise he had no artist ability at before that day he started painting. And had no Native American background or history. He would paint a lot from his dreams too. He made colors with household items and used coffee grounds for texture.

I haven't drawn much in 35 years. One of my earliest drawings (around 16) was what I think I'd look like older. I drew hair on my head. I was wrong.

This should be somehow incorporated into the show Apple TV show Foundation. This is Dawn, Day and Dusk.

Try adding a lobster to every painting. Hide it somewhere. This is what all great painters do.

I really like that. Did you draw or do anything else visually creative prior to discovering painting or was it literally start from scratch?
•
u/Threshold_Guardian2 9h ago
I drew in elementary school. I put it away. This is sort of related to that!

Little nod to Norman Rockwell? Compositionally anyway, reminds me a lot of his triple self portrait

My guy, you are awesome! As a guy with absolutely no artistic ability, I salute your talent!

Really cool concept, but I find the more I try to interpret it, the less I understand it. The artist sees his young self in the mirror but paints his future old self on the canvas. I assume it is kind of like, “I still feel like a kid inside, but I know I’m on the back 9 of life and am starting to have existential dread.” But I’m not sure that quite fits what’s being portrayed here. Care to offer your interpretation?

This makes me think of the sculptor Duane Hanson, who sometimes put self portraits in his work.

Nice job! I also found painting in my 30s and it's been an incredible journey. Keep it up!
