I’ve been living in Alberta for over 20 years. I still haven’t figured out what I need to be mad at the rest of Canada about.

You gotta live in some weird bubble of friends and media to figure it out I guess.

I think we shouldn’t underestimate how powerful memes can be on boomers and .. well everyone .

It’s not just boomers though in Alberta

My Alberta acquaintances say Alberta sends money to keep Manitoba afloat so yeah it's bubbly

Yeah that is common in theory we cover PEI BUT we receive double the equalization than we actually send.

A lot of the underlying issues that sparked the separatists movement I Alberta are from a time before you moved here. It's been generations in the making and it's also been sentiment passed down through the generations.

That being said, this wave of separatism is just propaganda fuel for political destabilization and pushing our governments more inline with the needs of American Capital.

Most albertan’s aren’t from Alberta. Why the seppies think the ghost of the NEP is going to resonate with most Albertans is beyond me. It shocks me that anyone under 70 aligns with them.

It's not just the NEP.

The spectre of the NEP and its effects on the oilfield services has been used as a boogeyman in the patch since it was repealed and the next boom came along.

I live just a couple hours outside Toronto. There's a house with a confederate flag just outside a little town called Jarvis. You don't need to go far to find the cults even in Ontario.

Perfection.. this is the most accurate way of depicting their issues

Yes and no. Its just a meme, but a lot of the online discourse that pushes Alberta separatists to behave this way is foreign interference.

In fact, I'd argue that a lot of what we're seeing here and south of the border in the past decade is, in large part, the culmination of cyber warfare thats been going on in the background between the great power states since at least brexit (anyone remember Cambridge analytica?)

Here's a primer on how powerful control over online discourse is for anyone interested https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ5XN_mJE8Y

Cyber warfare has definitely make things worse, but the underlying ideas in the OP have been around for decades. We’ve had people complain about equalization payments before the internet was a thing. Misinformation is the problem, most people don’t actually understand the equalization payments, all they see is that we are a “have” province, and others are “have nots”, and think that we send all of our money to those provinces.

Just found out my sister in law who we don’t speak to is a hard core separatist.

She gets roughly $2500 a month in federal Canada child benefit cheques, and benefits from tons of other federal programs.

Knowing her, she has never spared a thought for the idea that these programs which allow her to live reasonably comfortably are federal, and she’d be trusting her entire quality of life to the Alberta government which has been gutting provincially administered programs for years.

Imagine, if you will, that China is known to not just fund, support, spread and highlight California separatists, but that the relevant Californian politicians would be open about colluding with China in this matter for the sake of weakening the US.

Would the word "traitor" be passed around? Would the federal government come down and lay down the law? Would intelligent agencies and the media be involved to stop these things? I would say so.

So explain to me why the Canadian federal government is just letting this happen. Why is everyone pussyfooting around here?

Is it because Canada is subservient to the same capitalist influence that rules the US? I would say so. What's your explanation?

I hope they are tracking all of the information and relevant parties, waiting for the referrendum to happen and not interfering because they want to avoid any impression they are interfering with the provincial process. If the whole thing is suspect then I hope they raise the point and lay out the interference information to the public, and then start arresting and charging anyone guilty of violating the law. I cannot see them just blindly ignoring financial and political interference from another nation when it threatens the stability of our entire country.

It's the same as every Independence movement. You keep being told how special you are and people start to believe it.

Facebook. It connected idiots, re-enforced their petty grievances and amplified their voices. "Social Media" is a cancer on society and self well being (yes I get the irony with Reddit as I post this, but it doesn't enrage me as much as entertain).

My buddy from Alberta literally just told me these as the two big reasons for the friction. "They get to decide for us because they're densely populated and have the numbers to out-vote us, and they take all of our money while treating us like crap." Has he taken the red pill?
