Found a link to the model if anyone wants to print it for themselves. Gonna dump out all my M3s and try it out.

Why is sorting screws by length somehow more satisfying than it has any right to be

Now make me one that can literally sort through all screw sizes SAE and Metric. Bonus points for sorting by thread type, material type, head shape and size, whether it needs a Phillips, flat head, or whatever. and length.
I have so many screws, bolts, nails, washers, spacers, wall anchors, drill bit sizes, nuts, and most of them are sitting in a 5 gallon bucket cause idk what I should do with them

Have kids? My dad used to ask me to come sort stuff like this and clean the garage. He said he fixed my shit so I could help a little.
He let me pick the radio station and we would chat while I organized and he measured or soldiered something. It was nice. :)

I'll be real with you chief.
Most people's time is worth more than that 0.01$ bolt
And if my time on jobsites has taught me anything, it's that those drill bits are almost definitely dull to the point of worthless anyway.
If you don't already have a bin for whatever bolt or nut you salvaged, you almost definitely don't need it. And if you do need it, you will need more than one, and you will usually go buy a new pack anyway because fuck sorting through a bin for half an hour to still not have what you need. And even if you DO, you won't have the nuts or washers to go with it 🤷♀️
Hoarding hardware is an exercise in madness.

Yet, somehow, I still manage to use random washers, bolts, and nuts I have in a pile despite not having a dedicated bin for each and every size.
And sometimes you want a shitty drill bit so you're not ruining a decent one.
Nobody keeps the random bolts for new projects. They keep them for when they're putting the lawnmower back together and dropped a nut in the grass.

Pretty slow method of sorting that out

Vertical feed jig and a cover plate to keep them from leaving the device.

Now make an attachment so I can dump a load of them in and it'll feed this thing one at a time so I don't have to keep carefully placing each.

In college, it was a requirement for Theatre 100 student to work 15 hours at the theatre as a part of their grade. I was a Theatre major. We'd get a group of overly made up freshmen girls with long nails & heels coming in to do their hours. So, we'd sit them all at a large table and dump out several canister of screws, nuts, bolts & washers that were swept up in the shop and after tearing down a show. "Sort these out." They would happily sit there sorting out hardware so it could be reused.

The idea of carefully placing each individual screw like that from a bag of dusty mixed up screws infuriates me

The mechanism is super clever, but placing them in one by one by hand kind of defeats the purpose. Attach a vibrating hopper bowl to feed them automatically and then we're talking!

Those tiny labeled compartments! Turning a jumble of screws into neat little rows is ridiculously pleasing.

Got a method that might take a bit longer? Jfc this is stupid

The latency isn't great, but it's the throughput that actually matters, and that can be much faster than shown in the video

that was not a nut
