My overall reading pace has slowed down as I'm working on finishing my degree. Currently reading The Odyssey, as a bit of a break from books related to my studies. Just wanted to share a milestone (:

Seeking nonfiction old-timey bank robberies and old-timey heists

I am in the mood for books with Bonnie and Clyde vibes...Any good book about them, I'm interested in.

I've already read Tiger Girl and the Candy Kid, and A Gentleman and a Thief: The Daring Jewel Heists of a Jazz Age Rogue and loved them both.

I am already aware of The Art Thief and The Feather Thief.

I am looking more for old-timey bank robberies, train heists, bank heists, jewel heists, etc., since I love history.

As always, your input is appreciated. 🙂

What would you suggest to someone who wants to start his Journey into non fiction books coming from fiction ?

I have been reader for as long as I remember, School, collage. Reading almost anything from non-fiction, self help, theory, studies, how to books, dummies collection .

For last couple of years, I have been heavily into fiction books. I want to enrich my taste in non-fiction as well . I am not looking for anything specific but interesting enough to keep me on non-fiction .

It would be really great, if the book isn't motivational or self help book disguised as motivation .

I'm looking for something around 200-300 pages. Not too heavy, if we can keep it light as I deepen my interest .

Thanks in advance .

Hello, ive read How To Sell A Genocide by Adam Johnson, was familiar with the news coverage coming out and was wondering if there were books that provide further information that news reading audiences were not aware of or general literature on the impact, politics and any investigations into the subject

Do you cover-to-cover non-fiction books

I was in a discussion with a friend the other day about how we read non-fiction books. How do people read them? Do people actually read non-fiction books cover-to-cover? Do you skim it? Do you read the introduction and the first couple of chapters and then call it a day?

I always expect myself to finish a book completely - every last word - but I really struggle with non-fiction because after the first couple of chapters they always seem very repetitive. But then I feel bad about not finishing them. I'm curious, how do other people read non-fiction?

EDIT to add:
To answer the question of what type of books I am reading, I am mostly referring to more pop-science type books I guess

Young Men and Fire

Just starting this and pretty impressed. Got the idea from this community. Thank you. I had shared another great non-fiction work (fire Weather) and someone recommended this. Writing style is so…authentic, visceral. Only words to describe it. Fascinating and tragic story.

what nonfiction book changed a completely unrelated thing you do every day?

not your career or your worldview.

something small

the way you look at buildings, grocery stores, maps, conversations, advertisements, machines, restaurants, whatever.

sometimes a book gives you one little piece of information and suddenly you can’t stop noticing it in real life

which book did that for you?

Catholicism

Hi everyone!

I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for so I hope my explanation will be somewhat clear haha

I'm interested in reading more about catholicism and sort of it's history, but not necessarily an analysis of the Bible. More so along the lines of different interpretations and the way catholics live?

I recently listened to a podcast where they mentioned Dietrich Bonhoeffer and how his faith inspired him to sacrifice himself to save lives during World War 2 and I'd like to know more about that sort of thing too?

so I suppose I'm looking for ways that catholic people have interpreted their faith, maybe some of the subsections of catholicism, maybe some about how interpretations have changed through time?

Thanks already!

Concept breaker - Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World

The authors patiently walk you through what it means to be a sensitive person with much compassion and understanding, personal anecdotes and stories. Changed the way I saw myself and my relationships with others. Whether you think you're a sensitive person, or someone in your life is sensitive and you'd like to understand them more, I'd highly recommend.

What book would you recommend for learning about the French Revolution?

Hello 👋 although I got an overview of the French Revolution during by education, I feel like this moment in history comes up a lot in historical discussion and is worth a deeper dive. Though maybe not too deep in a specific aspect such as politics or economics- I would still appreciate a holistic view. Although I prefer English -also don’t mind reading something on the short side in French. Thanks! 😄

Hidden Valley Road

I’ve come to adore non-fiction, but this one has stuck with me more than most… it’s haunting, beautiful, shocking and informative all at the same time - a portrait of human illness and human ignorance.

If anyone is looking for their next read, I cannot recommend enough

What are the best history books about culinary diplomacy?

While browsing the web, I learned that some countries like Peru, Thailand, South Korea, and the United States used food as a form of public and cultural diplomacy to foster relations with other countries, win hearts and minds, and foster knowledge about their country's cuisine. In Thailand's case they helped set up restaurants outside of their country through loans and training. And let us not forget that culinary diplomacy is also useful in winning over Heads of State through banquets and feasts. For example during the Napoleonic Wars, the Coalition used the services of Marie-Antoine Careme to prepare an elaborate feast for the Russian Tsar. And in the 1939, FDR served hot dogs to the King and Queen of England during their Royal visit to the USA.

And that got me thinking, are there any history books about culinary diplomacy?

Either ones about:

  1. Cooks who have helped prepare important feasts and banquets (Ex: State Dinners) to help win over other heads of state.

  2. Ones about countries encouraging entrepreneurs and cooks to go to other countries and open up restaurants that serve their country’s cuisine. For example in the post-WW2 era certain American foods like hot dogs, hamburgers, and pizzas quickly became popular in Japan. So maybe they could do a story about the US government encouraging people to open up restaurants that serve these foods in order to solidify relations with the new Japanese government.
