PSA A Note From the Mods as the Sphere Shows Wrap Up

Hey You! On behalf of the Mod Team here at /r/NoDoubt, we want to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who's been part of this community throughout the Sphere residency. Over these last few months, the subreddit has been anything but Sinking. With 20,000+ weekly visitors and a 30% jump in subscribers, the energy here has been Hella Good.

Now that the shows have wrapped, it's normal to feel a little Ache and even a bit of sorrow Sometimes... But we’re not ready to End It on This. The Mod Team already has several New ideas Under Construction... Nothing drastic, just some things we hope will keep the vibe Rock Steady as we Move On to new topics of discussion. So don't go heading for Greener Pastures just yet! Stick around, keep posting, and let's keep this place Running instead of it turning into Leftovers.

By The Way, we also want to thank everyone for playing nice and following the community conduct rules we outlined in the original thread. Most folks have been great, too... no Total Hate, and very few people were sent to the Doghouse. Altogether, I'm pleasantly Stricken by how it's mostly just been Different People coming together with A Little Something Refreshing in these trying times: enthusiasm, kindness, and a shared love for this kickass band. Consider this a friendly reminder that those expectations are still in effect as we head into whatever comes Full Circle next.

Whether you were at the shows or living through everyone's photos and videos, this whole moment has felt like one big experience of us all Dreaming the Same Dream. Thanks again for making this subreddit Sparkle and keeping it such a fun, positive place. Truly, the Magic's in the Makeup of this community.

*Hella Good* anniversary gift made me *Squeal*! 💕

Post image

Just want to brag on my husband for a minute and share my joy with people who will understand!

I got invited on stage on May 27th, and it was obviously one of the top best moments of my life.

We did our merch shopping before the show, and I opted not to get a poster because of all the other money I was spending 😂

After the epic on stage experience, I went looking for a poster, but they were all sold out.

All good, I thought—I already got incredibly lucky. (Someone even gave me their orange after the show because of seeing my extreme excitement on stage lol Still so grateful for that kind stranger.)

Well, fast-forward to my anniversary yesterday. My husband, who was my date that night, framed stills from the selfie video I took and got the poster and beautifully framed it 😭

I'm going to put it by my front door so I can start each day remembering that dreams can come true ✨️

Dark Blue is an underrated gem

Hi, everyone. I am new here but I have been enjoying digging into No Doubt's music recently. I have now listened to Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn. I am loving it. Dark Blue especially stood out to me. It is such a gem.

🍊 ISO: No Doubt Sphere orange — hoping someone has an extra! 🍊

I went to the No Doubt show at the Sphere in June and had the absolute BEST time. Gwen sounded incredible, the visuals were amazing, and then during “Don’t Speak” I somehow managed to catch THREE oranges! 😂🍊🍊🍊
I kept one and gave the other two to the people sitting next to me because I was so excited and wanted to share the luck.
Unfortunately… my son managed to ruin the one I kept. 😭💔🍊
So now I’m hoping someone here might have an extra orange they’re willing to part with. I would happily buy one and pay for shipping, or I’m open to hearing what you’d want for one.
I know they’re just foam oranges, but after that incredible night and the fact that I actually caught one myself, I’d really love to have one to keep as a souvenir.
If anyone has an extra they’re willing to part with, please DM me. ❤️🍊
Thank you, fellow No Doubt fans! 🖤

John Francis Spence

Post image
93 Upvotes

John Francis Spence was the original front man of No Doubt. A few days prior to No Doubt’s musical debut at the Roxy Theater, he committed suicide via a gun shot wound in an empty park

As a long time No Doubt fan I have always found his death somewhat appalling. I can’t conclusively say foul play was involved but I’ve always found the timing so odd to say the least.

I completely understand depression manifests differently for everyone, but even his alleged letter never sat right with me. Does anyone else share similar feelings?

Also there are conflicting reports on the circumstances surrounding his death. Some articles state his band members found him, whereas other reports state Kirk Stefani notified bandmates several days later.

Disclaimer: I am not insinuating anything about former or current band mates. Nonetheless the matter of his death still remains very odd objectively. No Doubt as we know it hadn’t began to exist; so there is no reason to think band members were involved.

Edit: I am not deterred by the downvotes, get real. This post has more than 10K views, I think I’ll be okay.

Special thanks to the mods, who somehow believe down votes are doing a heavier job than taking the post down for some reason.

My interpretation of the wonderfully nostalgic 90's classic, Don't Speak by No Doubt.

I hope I captured some of its magic.

I'd love your thoughts. This song takes me back in time to better days.

No Doubt Push & Shove Era Performances on YouTube

Can y’all drop some links of No Doubt performances from when they Push and Shove album came out? I know they performed on a bunch of talk shows but I can barely find anything on YouTube. I’m not talking about recordings from people cellphones… I am talking about when they were on Ellen and whatnot.

Don’t Speak [Bass Cover – full version on YouTube]

Bass part originally played by Tony Kanal, obviously. The chord sequence of the chorus must be one of the most beautifully sad there is.

Find the complete song on YouTube. The sheet music is available through my website.

I haven’t seen anyone talk about this yet

I first got into No Doubt because I heard Don’t Speak (like many other people I assume) but what really pulled me in to check out the rest of their discography was the song Tragic Kingdom. The title alone pulled me in to listen to it because what would a song called “Tragic Kingdom” sound like? I loved the whole song but what really stood out to me was the ending of the song. How it speeds up and gets more and more chaotic I LOVED it and it made me want to check out more of their music. But I’ve never seen anyone online speaking about the ending of that song. Idk it really stood out to me so I thought it would’ve stood out to others too. Maybe it did but no one has posted anything about it. Does anyone else have the same thoughts about the ending of that song?

What Are Your Favorite No Doubt Songs?

Hi No Doubters, how are you?

I recently joined this subreddit and honestly, I love everything you guys share here: your experiences at the shows, the No Doubt Experience, which looks really cool, and seeing the good vibes between everyone and the appreciation you have for the band through the way you talk about them.

Today I wanted to ask you guys to share your favorite songs from each album, or just songs that you particularly like. I'll leave mine below.

First Album — No Doubt (1992)

Honestly, I haven't listened to this album, nor have I listened to any songs from it individually. I know Trapped in a Box, but I don't really like it that much, so I'd rather listen to the album before giving my opinion on it.

Second Album — The Beacon Street Collection (1995)

Here I do have some songs I really like:

- Total Hate '95: Particularly, I really like the part with the Sublime singer.

- By The Way: I love the way this song starts, and I think it could have been on Return of Saturn.

Third Album — Tragic Kingdom (1995)

- Spiderwebs: Absolutely nothing to say. It's an incredible song to completely destroy everything with the amount of energy it gives you, and that's enough to make it a great song.

- Excuse Me Mr.: Another great one, but this one has something really interesting: Gwen's performance. She's on another level in this song. It feels like she's playing a completely crazy character.

- Just a Girl: I don't really like the song that much. The only part I like is the ending, when the melody changes with the "ooohh", but that's pretty much it. I included it because it's a song that's difficult to ignore. You can't really not have an opinion on it.

- Different People: This song represents the purest version of the band's ska sound, with great lyrics for its time, and it has aged really well.

- Sixteen: I love the opening riff. When it comes to riffs, I think this is the album where Tom shines the most in that aspect.

- Sunday Morning: The best song live. It also has a really great video that gives you a certain feeling of happiness. It doesn't even feel like the video has a script; it feels more like you're watching an everyday situation.

- Don't Speak: In my book, and after listening to most of their songs, it's still the best No Doubt song. It's a 10/10, and I don't want to sound like a poser, but I still believe it.

- Tragic Kingdom: It closes the album with one of their best songs. Tom's riff is great again, the horns are perfect, and the melody is very dramatic, just like the title of the song and the album suggests.

To close out this album, you can really see how important it was, because I imagine you guys probably also have four or more songs from this album among your favorites.

Fourth Album — Return of Saturn (2000)

- Ex-Girlfriend: It's not one of the songs I've listened to the most from this band, but there's a really heavy emotion reflected here, similar to Cool from Gwen's solo career, but from a different perspective and with a different attitude.

- Simple Kind of Life: Honestly, this song gives you a certain feeling of sadness without actually being a sad song. It's about something you aspire to and long for but don't have at the moment, and that's why it's so great: it creates exactly the feeling it's trying to create.

- Bathwater: What a song. Unlike the previous two, it moves away from that heavy emotion and becomes more energetic. And there's something that happens in many No Doubt songs: they become really good after the two-minute mark.

(These three songs are in order on the album, so what an incredible start to the album.)

- Magic's in the Makeup: Excellent lyrics. Nothing else to add. It's not very solemn, though.

- Artificial Sweetener: A difficult song to listen to because it reminds you that life isn't always that beautiful. I think this song perfectly reflects what you guys were saying in a recent post about why this album is so difficult to listen to: it's probably the closest thing to a 1v1 against yourself.

- Marry Me: 100/10 in terms of performance. Gwen >>> whoever you want.

- New: The lyrics describe that feeling really well, even if they're not particularly complex. And the chorus is great; it makes you feel a little more excited and hopeful.

- Home Now: Nothing else to add.

Fifth Album — Rock Steady (2001), my favorite album

- Hella Good: Here you can already start to see this "new No Doubt", moving toward dancehall, with a synthesizer that genuinely makes you uncomfortable because of how good it sounds.

- Hey Baby: It's a meh for me, but it's the most dancehall song on the album, and I don't think it's brilliant. I'd give it a 6.5/10.

- Making Out: One characteristic of this album that starts to become noticeable here is the backing vocals, which are amazing. It's the most danceable song on the album and it's really fun to experience live.

- Underneath It All: Two things:

- The video is spectacularly beautiful.

- I love the bridge, especially the part about "so many moons that we have seen." It's a 10/10.

- Don't Let Me Down: Underrated song. I see that they don't really play it live, which I think is a shame because it's really good.

- Running: The most nostalgic song I've ever heard, and the video reflects that. The piano is the best part of the song. It's the best song on the album along with Underneath It All.

- In My Head: A song nobody ever seems to mention, but I think it's really good because of its rhythm, and the ending becomes dramatic, which I really like.

- Platinum Blonde Life: It sounds like a generic 2000s/2010s song to me, but I remember that it came out in 2001, so I'll give it some extra points for anticipating that generic sound.

- Rock Steady: It has this nostalgic, almost farewell-like vibe, and considering that, I think it's a really good song.

Before the PS, if you have any recommendations, feel free to tell me about them while you're making your own song selections. I'm always looking for more No Doubt songs to listen to.

So, to say goodbye after writing way too much (I hope you guys are just as long-winded), I want to say that I discovered the band in May of this year while they were doing their shows at The Sphere. I'm from Argentina 🇦🇷 and I'm 16, and I really hope that one day I'll get to see them live with all of you.

Bye, see you next time.

PS: Love you guys.

My semi-annual reminder that Return of Saturn is an actual masterpiece

I feel like discourse around this album has quieted down and this is not acceptable.

This is not only the band and Gwen at their musical and lyrical peak, but an incredible touchstone for pop music itself.

When all I ever wanted was the simple things. A simple kind of life.

It's the turn of the millennium. Before things got real bad, but a clock ticking to triple-zero is asking everyone to really take stock. And early in the second-quarter No Doubt releases Return of Saturn, a brutally honest and introspectively cruel power pop album that lays brutally bare and naked the insecurity and self-doubt everyone was feeling.

It's no longer the 90s. People are no longer going for it. 2000 is humanity's birthday, and someday they'll be dead and gone, buried six feet underground.

Panic sets in. Big panic. The kind of panic that can only be explained by please let this work as There's more than one dimension, I can fool you and attract attention.

It's not like we properly know ourselves but on the cusp of a new definition of humanity we are expected to explain ourselves. That sort of emotive paranoia is quiet for now. But traces remain.

Return of Saturn puts the power in power pop. Not since Our Lady Peace's Clumsy & Naveed has it truly been this loud, cruel, and confrontative. As Gwen screams about artificial sweetener, the band is spidering in the backround. This is not a feel good song. This is not a feel good album. This is pain.

And then it gets quiet. Real quiet. I think Gwen really discovered dub with Marry Me. Dub, as a genre, can be described as a magic carpet ride over sheer turmoil. And on this carpet she asks: "I'm not who I used to be, but would you marry me?"

We're new. You. You're new.

We're reborn. We've never had this taste in the past. Paranoia be damned. The drum kicks in. The riff is a juggernaut. The bass is familiar.

We are home. But we've never had this taste in the past?

You know what I love most about this song? The verses are leading to chrous but says fuck that, we got more to say. No Doubt carries it to expected chorus then drops standardization to go to a bass heavy bridge. Why? Because she wants drop that broken heart line with weight.

Weight. Isn't that what I've been getting at all this time? Not only is the album musically close to punk juggernauts like Nomeansno, its attitude is aggressive towards things that go down easy. And we're only halfway through.

But for now I hope it doesn't feel too late. Because they still have a lot more to say.

Sahara single?

Apple Music dropped a Sahara by No Doubt single. Very confused? Is this a mistake? A house single that sounds nothing like No Doubt?

Does a solo Gwen show interest you?

She’s doing a solo show about an hour from me in November and I’m thinking of going - although I went to a Sphere show for No Doubt and for some reason she plays a lot of ND tracks instead of her solo music (I was obsessed with her first two solo albums/tours). I’m going to debate once I see the prices - she tried this about 2 years ago with $350.00 seats and it was cancelled. I will say her voice was still in reality good shape though so maybe….what do you think?
