All five people who have died from the disease in Pennsylvania this year were unvaccinated. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease but preventable with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, which is 97% effective after two doses.

Seems relevant.

u/canzicrans 10h ago

I actually hate it when the news calls measles a highly contagious disease. It is considered the most contagious disease we know, with a 90% infection rate among unvaccinated people. Maybe more people would vaccinate if news agencies would stress its incredible infection rate more.

It is the Amish here in Pennsylvania they have it the most.

Working in medicine and working with Amish that are calling because they have it, they don’t care. “It’s gods will”.

It’s stupid.

For the ones that call an ambulance for it, their whole family has it and the only ones getting counted are the ones going for treatment. Our numbers have to be way higher.

The state had a pop up vaccine clinic in a high Amish population area and a lot less showed up than we hoped would.

Whole thing is stupid AF.

Must have been a really awful person if God personally wants you off the planet.

34

u/BiNumber3 6h ago

I have an extremely religious acquaintance. Most recently, he explained how other religions' gods are all actually devils...

Anyway, he recently got a rather severe injury while volunteering at his church. He has no insurance, and wont ask the church to use their property insurance.

I didnt say anything, but just wonder what he's thinking about since he's also a very "It's god's will" sort of dude.

14

u/Koshindan 6h ago

Funny how "God's Will" never gets them to look back and think it's a warning for their own behavior.

Everyone is going to Hell in somebody else's religion.

Basically if you aren't vaccinated, you are going to get it at this point. Herd immunity is breaking down.

6

u/Not_floridaman 3h ago

I am neighboring PA, go camping often there and visit friends who live in the state frequently but what's fun is that I'm on biologic meds for Lupus and RA so now even though my last titer test years ago was still good, I don't want to take unnecessary risks thus my plans have to change. Super fun!

3

u/lionheart4life 3h ago

Sucks that it has to be that way. MMR vaccine has such mild side effects if anything. Scary things is that if we are heading about 1000 cases who knows how many more there really are.

13

u/Mazon_Del 8h ago

While I agree, I don't think it would help the people who just refuse to get unvaccinated will declare something like "That number is a lie! If it really was 90% there'd be tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people infected!" and just completely ignore or not care that the reason this is not true is BECAUSE of vaccinations.

9

u/canzicrans 8h ago

I know I'm naive, but I try to hope that every bit of objective info might help.

3

u/Mazon_Del 8h ago

Aye, most of the time I aim not to convince the other side, but a supposed third party that might be on the fence.

8

u/Groovychick1978 8h ago

Exactly. Absolute insanity.

3

u/Slypenslyde 7h ago

Jesus Christ could preach on the virtues and it wouldn't make people who listen to RFK and Trump do it. He's a liberal and was put down by conservative religious leaders for his lip.

Hopefully they weren’t innocent children who weren’t old enough to get the vaccine yet

179

u/Granum22 11h ago

One of the deaths the Feds and PA were arguing over was a newborn who tested positive at birth .  It's burning it's way through the Amish communities. It's going to get worse.

122

u/scienceislice 11h ago

Maybe the Amish should just get vaccinated then

131

u/spazzxxcc12 10h ago

when you wanna roleplay living in the 1800s, might as well roleplay dying in it.

33

u/ZoomBoingDing 9h ago

Except the kid didn't ask for that

8

u/Versificator 8h ago

Well, its only chance then is to take the kid from its family. Probably not going to happen. Unless you're proposing that you somehow collectively convince the Amish to change their religious ways. Also, the kid, if it survives to adulthood, will just be another Amish. I expect they will repeat the process (including not vaccinating) as soon as they can rear their own. "The kid" may not have asked for it, but they will certainly insist on it for their children.

8

u/TimWhirly 6h ago

Humans evolve. Religions should too. If you're a parent and willing to let your child die then maybe your religion should die out.

3

u/Versificator 6h ago

I don't disagree. Unfortunately the reality is that religion cannot evolve without losing its capacity to control its adherents. Since this is its main purpose, we can expect them to attempt to tighten their grip rather than loosen it. This is why you've got tradcaths who hate the pope and evangelicals who think empathy is a weakness.

The only way is through slow attrition to no religion at all, which is currently happening. Hopefully it speeds up.

5

u/scienceislice 5h ago

Apparently the Amish are so inbred that they gave a higher than average rate of genetic conditions that cause lifelong disability and for many, cognition issues. They also are more likely to have 5+ kids per family. I wonder if they’ll get to a point where they need outside help caring for everyone, and will have to let outside people in.

“You know what’s a good business? Teeny tiny baby coffins.”

38

u/chuckie512 9h ago

Don't forget the Amish still go out in public too... So make sure you get vaccinated to protect yourself from the Amish.

For some people, MMR can wear off in adulthood. Worth talking to your doctor about, especially if you have young kids in the family.

18

u/Ketomancer 8h ago

This! When I switched my career to healthcare, I had to get re-vaccinated when they tested my titers. Oddly enough, mumps and rubella were okay, but nada for measles. Don't think you're protected because you had a childhood MMR series!

24

u/SolChapelMbret 10h ago

No no no. They have ‘religious freedom’ so it’s not their fault measles is rampant, it’s the vaccination!! No mind the actual statistics!!

2

u/morfraen 4h ago

It's kind of funny that thing keeping them safe before was everyone else getting vaccinated.

5

u/MrBootylove 9h ago

For what it's worth I believe that newborn also had some kind of fatal genetic disorder that exists within the Amish community and would not have survived long even without measles.

11

u/the_blackfish 8h ago

Heard a lot of this talk about the elderly dying of COVID. For what it's worth.

2

u/MrBootylove 7h ago

There's a bit of a difference between a small population who willingly chooses not to vaccinate against preventable diseases vs. a much larger, more vulnerable population that has no defense or treatment against a new and much more widespread virus.

And to be clear I do think it's very likely that this administration's anti-vaccine rhetoric caused this outbreak and there are likely way more sick people within the Amish community that aren't being reported on, since they tend to not go to the hospital when they get sick. The story about the baby is sad, but it did have a disorder called "Amish lethal microcephaly" and was going to die anyway. If your goal is to get people to care about the measles outbreak I personally think people are better off pointing towards the severity of the outbreak compared to previous measles outbreaks rather than that specific story.

52

u/MeasurementHot7619 11h ago

You know that's not the case. 2 of them were infants that couldn't be vaccinated. One was a 40 year old adult and the other was an 18 year old.

Not much information on the 5th yet (as of earlier this week)

107

u/Hairy-Entertainer-54 11h ago

Early 20s, leukemia patient, was ineligible to get the vaccine because of her immune system during chemo, last in her family to catch it and then complicated by double lung pneumonia. Family unvaccinated by choice.

63

u/Yarnum 11h ago

I can’t imagine how her medical team feels right now. So frustrating.

40

u/McLeansvilleAppFan 11h ago

Is the family going on about admitting they helped kill a member of their family or are they going on like, "We did all we could do and are clearly not culpable."

If everyone eligible gets the vaccine, then newborns and cancer patients as well as immunocompromised people will be protected. Because nobody will be able to expose the vulnerable. Herd immunity. What a concept. The community protects everyone by being vaccinated.

14

u/rad2thebone 10h ago

We saw how well they understood herd immunity in 2020; there is no hope for these type of folks.

3

u/LDS1952 10h ago

Yup. Dum(B)

2

u/ImCreeptastic 7h ago

2 of them were infants that couldn't be vaccinated.

Not exactly true. One got it in utero because the pregnant mother contracted measles. If the mom had the vaccine then 1.) she more than likely wouldn't have come down with it and 2.) immunity is passed from mother to baby so it would have some protection against it for the first 6 months at which time, they could receive their own dose since PA has changed the recommendations due to the outbreak.

3

u/MeasurementHot7619 7h ago

This is so needlessly splitting hairs. The point is that infant could not have got vaccinated and was a helpless victim to their parents shitty choices.

3

u/becauseshesays 6h ago

Yeah, true, if it had gotten measles 2 months or two years later it still wouldn’t have been vaxed.

2

u/darcerin 9h ago

At least one of early deaths was... Not that this changes anything but I believe the kid was Amish.

32

u/Parafault 11h ago

I’m fully vaccinated, but I had a titer test done and it showed no antibodies (despite the other 2, mumps and rubella, showing full protection. Unfortunately the information out there is unclear as to whether this means I’m protected or not - some sources say you’re still fully protected even with no antibodies as long as you had two shots, and others say you aren’t . I’m partially immunocompromised, so I have to talk to a doctor before I get a booster to make sure it’s safe: pregnant women and immunocompromised people are the main two categories that can’t get the MMR shot.

20

u/kgalla0 10h ago

You are not protected and need a booster

→ More replies (1)

6

u/lionheart4life 9h ago

What sources are saying you are still protected with no measurable antibodies? No employer who requires evidence of vaccination would consider that protected anymore.

6

u/Parafault 8h ago

The Washington State Department of Health and the CDC. See the link below and a quote from page 9:

“• A patient had their MMR titer checked and it was negative. What should they
do?

o Titers are not routinely recommended after MMR vaccination. If the patient
has 2 documented MMR doses, they are considered immune even with a
negative titer and do not need an additional vaccination”

https://doh.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2025-05/348-1104-MMRVaccineFAQHealthcareProvidersAndLHJs.pdf

5

u/twirlerina024 7h ago

Titers only measure the antibodies that are actively being produced. They can't measure what's stored in your memory B cells. It's sort of like if I looked at what's cooking on your stove right now and concluded that you weren't able to cook anything else.

I can see you're making rice and beans, and it's only safe to extrapolate that you can make rice and beans. I can't look at the cookbooks on your shelf, and I can't see inside your fridge or cabinets, so I can't say that you can make lasagna (In this tortured analogy, the rice and beans are antibodies to mumps and rubella, and the lasagna recipe we can't see is in your memory B cells).

2

u/lionheart4life 3h ago

Of course. But to keep with your analogy, you don't know that the lasagna page is even in the cookbook anymore. It may have worn or fallen out. It's just a "maybe." Perhaps best to just get a fresh lasagna recipe.

No personal beef, but when you have "unvaccinated" and "Pennsylvania" in the same place - the math is clear.

50

u/ManySalt6337 5h ago

Yes it is and as a lifelong Pennsylvanian I do not think of the Amish community as the innocent moral people they are often seen as by society.

11

u/laoganma_enima 4h ago

Do people think the Amish are innocent moral folks? Genuinely asking as I have no idea. I always thought they were creepy cultists.

ETA: fixed a typo

15

u/Chef_BoyarB 3h ago

People often see them as eccentric, religious, isolated folks who don't use electricity. Most don't realize the caste system involved and the oppressive lifestyles forced upon them by church leaders

6

u/The-Shattering-Light 2h ago

It’s interesting that you talk about misconceptions but also treat them as a monolith.

Many Amish communities, for example, do get vaccinated, and do accept use of technology to save lives; they choose to live without it in their day to day lives, not to the cost of lives.

2

u/laoganma_enima 3h ago

Thank you for replying! I genuinely thought most people thought they were creepy lol. They mistreat people using religion and are often horrible to animals (i.e. terrible breeding practices).

2

u/Unable_Pumpkin987 2h ago

They get special legal protection to pull their children out of school at an age when most citizens are subject to compulsory attendance (or their parents must prove continued home schooling). We’ve literally decided to make it easier for them to isolate and abuse their children, and prevent them from having the means to escape and support themselves outside of the cult. It’s sickening.

This actually isn't necessarily true. Some Amish people do vaccinate. It's not against their religion, as far as I know. They just don't typically get them because they don't see mainstream doctors. But I've had some Amish patients in the hospital opt in to vaccinations.

I'm in PA and got a measles booster last year. My dad got one a few months ago. At least those of us who are responsible are taking precautions.

17

u/syynapt1k 9h ago

I did the same thing after RFK Jr took over HHS because I didn't know how extreme he was going to be with regard to vaccine availability. I'm in my 40s and there was no cost, so I figured it couldn't hurt.

10

u/starglitter 9h ago

That was my reasoning. I got everything boosted that I could.

10

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 9h ago

I'm pondering a booster because I just got a job in a school and these kids are nasty. I was already sick once within a month of starting.

20

u/rockstaraimz 10h ago

47

u/RoswellRedux 11h ago

The twisted fact about the resurgent of preventable, and quite harmful, diseases is that Trump, RFK,Jr, and the rest of the cabinet (and their families, children, etc.) are all vaccinated against these same diseases. None of them are in the same danger that they encourage for others.

It's the gullible who suffer. Maybe that is part of their eugenics plan. Anyone who would take their advice is too stupid to have surviving offspring that would be useful beyond manual labor.

5

u/baronesslucy 6h ago

Unless fairly recently, you didn't have a lot of people who were anti-vax. When I was a kid, you had herd immunity because unless the person had a medical or religious exemption, everyone else was vaccinated. So you didn't have these outbreaks of measles like you do now.

I hate when people say this. My mom is immunocompromised. Her CD4 count is around 20. You need 200+ to safely get the MMR vaccine. She wants the MMR vaccine so badly she’s been in numerous NIH studies trying to boost her CD4 numbers to no avail. She relies on herd immunity. These selfish idiots are going to get people like my mom killed. As well as babies under a year old who can’t be vaccinated. It’s not fair.

If it starts getting close I will definitely be asking his pediatrician! He will be 6 months right around Christmas. Hand, Foot, and Mouth made their way through the infant room last week so he has been staying home just in case. I am grateful that a lot of my job can be done from home, but I won't always be able to keep him home. Plus my job is working directly with kids, so if there was an outbreak in our area I wouldn't have a clue if the kid I evaluated that day had been vaccinated or not. I'd just feel a whole lot safer if he was vaccinated.

Two doses of MMR vaccine prevents measles infection 97% of the time.

Politico did a story June 2019 on measles parties in Orthodox Brooklyn neighborhoods. Google for online story.

u/FernandoMM1220 9h ago

does anyone know if the state can mandate the measles vaccine on their own?

What do you think the average IQ is in households with a measles case,

And just how many are going to end up with life long consequences from getting measles?

2

u/mysecondaccountanon 8h ago

As a Pennsylvanian, this outbreak is honestly really, really bad. Like genuinely I have been involved in now two exposures just because of how prevalent things are getting here. I feel very lucky that despite being less protected against certain things due to my illnesses, the measles vaccine still does protect me.

Way to MAHA.

Jr should be impeached.

Stupid stunt

2

RFK needs to be charged with hundreds of counts of manslaughter.

2

u/Cirick1661 6h ago

Maybe an unpopular opinion but if an immunocompromised person dies from measals (they can't get the vaccine) and they can contract trace from them an individual who was unvaccinated, that person should be held up on manslaughter charges.

So fucking tired of exposing the most vulnerable because of stupidity. If you aren't immunocompromised and you fail to get the vaccine and you spread the disease to someone that dies, you should be held legally responsible for their death.

Who did they vote for?

  • The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed only two measles-related deaths nationwide this year, without naming the states.

Only 2 deaths for the year? Hmmm.

That lab in Russia just had a fatality due to something getting out.

All the parents should have their smartphones taken away and put on restriction from social media.

1

u/Fat_Wallets 6h ago

Is this based on a spread from religious people refusing to vaccinate?

1

u/Automatic_Maybe3862 3h ago

It’s a double whammy. You got the Amish, who aren’t gonna get vaccinated regardless of who is in office. Then South Central PA is loaded with Trumper’s who “I’ll be damned if you’re gonna tell them that they need a vaccination.”

Some people just like to live life on the edge
