What's this have to do with America? Have you heard of French?

Wouldn't it phonetically be Dih-ah-bait? We don't have a presidential de-bay-tay....

That's one of the best things about African names. They're pronounced just like they're spelled. It can't get any easier.

The problem is that English phonology is truly awful. Dia is pronounced Die uh in Diagram, and Bate is usually pronounced like bait as in Rebate or debate.
Die uh bait is on its face in English phonology a perfectly reasonable reading.
Honestly the actual pronunciation with that spelling is much more in line with Spanish phonology. Dee Uh Bah Tay is exactly the pronunciation you'd get with Spanish reading

There is an accent on the "e" so it could get easier if the pronunciation for every letter was standardized like it is in Latin.

Family friend is from Africa and her name is "Pa-shee-ma". It is spelled pajama. Like the pajamas you put on to go to bed.

My name is “Chas.” Guess who has called “Chase” at high school and undergrad graduations? It’s insane.

Honestly, it’s a very easy name to pronounce without the lesson. Americans are just illiterate.

I’m American. I have family that lives on a different continent. Let me tell you, some of their pronunciations of common American names are wild. Phonetics can be difficult.

But that's most likely because, phonetically, English is not that great of the language. It's not very user friendly and even a native speakers are not sure how something needs to be spelled or said. Or not said, or just saying sounds that are not even in the word. Grammar is easy thou.

Ah of course… it’s such a common surname that’s it’s genuinely bafflingly as to why anyone would ever mispronounce it. Mfers are goofy with their exotic last names. Like, we read shit more than hear it. If you just read it, I could easily see die A bates or die ah bahts being said. Diabetes is funny and likely mfers just trolling.

I respect the message, but this was one of the worst attempts at looking natural and spontaneous I’ve ever seen lol
