With the stricter rule, Scottie Barnes gets called for a push-off. If they keep calling it this tightly throughout the season, a few players could be in trouble.

Giannis did it in that same game and they didn't call it, this rule will collect dust after two weeks

Like when they called travelling 3 times in a row on Jordan Poole, only to never call it again on anyone?
50
u/RockDoveEnthusiast 3h ago
tbf, Jordan Poole sucks. and he travels a lot.
29
u/BrunsonmyGOAT Knicks 3h ago
I’ve always thought it was carrying. Poole made the carrying a bit too obvious, so refs started calling against even if it was a dribble style that many nba players get away with

It’s more so the extension, Giannis didn’t

u/Bobskidat Thunder 3h ago
Yeah the push off rule has always been about extending the forearm but I don’t expect people online to understand that at this point
7
u/qqbeef 2h ago
On his podcast, Bron mentions that he wants push offs gone, but he's ok with "space clearing" moves.
My guess is that he's ok with shoulder movement (think chicken dance), but not ok with elbow movement.

u/good_behavior_man 3h ago
No, it hasn't always been about that. Pushing off and initiating contact was called much more strictly 15+ years ago.
7
u/FKJVMMP [MIL] Bill Zopf 3h ago
“Pushing off and initiating contact” - clue is in the phrase. They’re two different things. You can initiate contact without pushing off and vice versa. Pushing off specifically is the point of emphasis, if you run into somebody and keep your arms at your side the whole time you haven’t pushed off.
That said Giannis still pushes off all the time, just slightly less blatantly than the Tatums or SGAs of the world.
8
u/Bobskidat Thunder 3h ago
I don’t know if they ever changed the writing in the rules or just the interpretation but that’s how I’ve seen it in the last decade or so

Flopping, traveling, and push offs need to get reigned in or we're not even really playing basketball anymore.
The flopping has gotten craazy and it's starting to resemble soccer, and I mean that in the worst way possible.

My best idea for the NBA that could meaningfully help watchability; a post game review of all games only assessing technical fouls for flopping. Sure, it wouldn’t impact the game real-time but that’s a feature not a bug. It keeps the game flow, doesn’t slow it down but…. Habitual floppers start accumulating techs, the league starts to see who those offenders are, and the players will adapt, especially toward the end of the year when missing games becomes a real possibility. And the kicker? There is no reset for the playoffs… flop all year long? It’s gonna cost your team in crunch time.
2
u/njb2017 Nets 33m ago
Interesting idea but I'd separate the flop counter and technical counter. Assessing a technical after the game doesn't do anything and if a player is a bench player or not someone who gets techs then they arent going to care about reaching 15 Techs and getting suspended. Id make the flop.counter like 5. After the 5th flop, you are suspended a game.

The last time the NBA actually enforced a point of emphasis past November was... what, hand checking in 05-06?
8
2
u/Gladweagreeonthsfact 3h ago
Pretty much, the travel/rip through/ offensive grappling lasted like 10 matches each.
6
u/FKJVMMP [MIL] Bill Zopf 3h ago
The rip through stuck, but that was a rule change that made it a non-shooting foul rather than a point of emphasis around illegal offensive moves.
Also travels off the catch-to-pump-fake-to-drive get called all the time now, just not any other kind of travel. So a bit of that stuck, just in a weird and inconsistent way.

u/Josheshua Thunder 3h ago
I’m fairly confident this would have been called last year with how much Klay stumbled back
11
u/CockMartins 3h ago
They’re never going to call any of their little focal points for the duration of the season. Players will keep using it and at the end of the day, the league isn’t willing to ruin a shitload of games fouling all the star players out. They’ll just slowly stop and only call it when the ref needs his over/under to hit or a less popular team is threatening a TV darling in the playoffs.
17
u/DontBanMe_IWasJoking New Zealand 3h ago
historically, they will enforce the rule for two weeks
2
u/TrailerParkBuddha Pacers 3h ago
I don't even know if this will make it that long, too many of their superstars do this constantly. Scottie is a fringe star and this is preseason, so it's fair game.
10
7
u/Longjumping-Can-6140 3h ago
It’s the extension of the arm, Scottie needs to learn to use his shoulder/elbow/chickenwing better

Show me 3 instances. Cuz i saw him doing a bunch of chicken wing fades - no extension. Mathurin did the same as well. Also they called this an offesive foul plenty of times last year too. The only diff this year is refs have been asked to pay closer attention to it.
29
u/avroLancasterBPR1 NBA 3h ago
Heres two that I found within 30 seconds of reading your reply, that feature full extension and no whistle.

u/McJuggernaugh7 Warriors 2h ago
The first one isn't really egregious it's not really a full extension kind of in between the mcollum example and the jb example. The second one was definitely an offensive foul. But pretending he "abused this" all the time is revisionist history

I feel like before a couple years ago was always called a foul (guys like Luka, Tatum, Shai were very good at the forearm shiver without extension), but it has become a free for all recently and it is 50/50 at best if this gets called (Jalen Brown seems to get away with extending like this all the time)

The problem with flopping is the players are too good at it. It needs to be punished by review.
1
u/Familiar-Mix3546 Thunder 1h ago
The thing is the more rules there are to enforce, the more flopping there will be. Players will eventually catch on to how moves are called and exaggerate more to get the whistle. Offensively and defensively

u/Ragnar28 Knicks 1h ago
They tried that a season or two ago. Said in the off season they were gonna be "cracking down on it" , called it a lot in the first couple games, I distinctly remember Marcus Smart getting called for one and being flabbergasted, but after that, I haven't seen it called since

The NHL does this every year... for the first few games, they call the games tight. By playoff time the stars can do whatever they want without any risk of a penalty.
