For sure he’s going to get opportunities he never got playing next to LeBron + AD and then LeBron + Luka + Reaves.

We were getting spoon fed podz and he’s ending up like a guy trying to flop instead of just sinking routine shots

International ball. He's been looking like he's ready to take it up a notch.

He was supposed to retire a Laker

What? Not even superstars are retiring with the team you might expect them to. Rui will play for like 3 more teams before he's done.

Can someone explain? He's a role player. Or am I just talking to fucking casuals here? The Clips ain't sniffing the yoffs and if Rui puts up pretty stats on big usage, that's a bad sign for any NBA franchise.

Lakers let all the guys that actually helped them win round 1 go. Kept all the non-playable or injury prone players.

I mean the OKC series showed there were real limitations with that group in the end and they needed to do a complete overhaul.
Smart is old and going to be more injury prone, Kennard is a defensive liability and doesn't shoot the ball enough to justify keeping him, Rui is an empty player outside of his shooting, Ayton has no motor and can't defend, and Hayes is a vet min player.
At least what we're getting with this new group is more overall athleticism, a team that plays harder and with more energy, and a bonafide top defensive anchor in this league.

In addition we lost a major piece called LeBron James, Sr., so we needed to pivot to a different roster structure.

They would have let the "non-playable" guys go too if they were also free agents, and they've been looking to salary dump them for a while.
Nonetheless, it is definitely fascinating that not a single one of their starting 5 for game 1 of the first round returned. Even for those who will argue that there's a valid justification for letting each one walk for nothing, abandoning long-term chemistry and roster continuity for Luka, Austin, Walker, and overpaid role players is an odd strategy. I like Walker a lot though, so I'm rooting for him.

Watched my first Laker game vs the Rockets and two months later all the starters who balled the fuck out were gone

Rui has been getting better and better every year, but let’s not pretend he was perfect. He doesnt read ball-movement well, he isn’t a good passer, was one of the worst rebounders in the league for his position, and did get beat a lot defensively. He is a great shooter and his mid-range might be one of the best in the league right now. Hes also become a better finisher. But that’s not the whole picture.

I'm sad the Lakers gave this up. It shows that with opportunities he could be a decent starter. Unfortunate he has to compete for pf minutes with LeBron and AD. But have to say his contributions could be inconsistent.
