He was our best/most tradeable contract and there were no takers.
I understand there is a subset of fans who are giving him too much hate and trying to prop up Mamu, but at the same time, there are too many /r/nba casuals who only saw his performance vs OKC game 4 and think he always plays like that.
He will 100% have games this season of 6/6 shooting from 3 and the comments will be full of people saying the Lakers were dumb for letting him go. He wasn't coming back to the Lakers at the contract he got from the Clippers. Then the other games where he goes 2/6 or 2/3 for 8 points on the night, it will crickets. It's just how the sub is.
1
u/Resident_Bass_3142 1h ago
BS, you are referring to Vanderbilt and Knect
2
u/WakiLover Lakers 1h ago
No, both Vando and Knecht were and are negative value.
Dalton AT BEST is contract filler.
Rui had the biggest tradeable contract (and was expiring) last year, and there were no takers. I know this sub isn't the peak of basketball knowledge but Laker fans got shit on for any package including Rui as positive value.
3
u/ElBluntDealer Clippers 1h ago
Honestly damn near our full squad are contenders to be traded to a contender by trade deadline.
We have so many nice contracts:
DJJ $10.4m 1 year
Rui $14m 1 year + option
Strus $16m 1 year
Ingram 40m 1 year + option (nice way to take on a bad contract and get other net positive assets)
Beal 6.4m 1 year + option (if he finds a way to be serviceable)
We got a few other ones but some of these guys can net us some assets.

6
u/WakiLover Lakers 2h ago
Summary: Rui signed with Clippers in Free Agency on a cheap, team friendly contract.
Basically, Rui wanted to stay stay in LA. Especially after his playoff performance, he likely wanted the same as his previous contract and better, so 3 years / 60 mil. Lakers didn't seem very interested in bringing him back because while Rui is an elite shooter, he can't really do anything else on offense, and isn't a good rebounder or defender.
Lakers prioritized their new signings, money dried up in free agency, and since Rui wanted to stay in LA, he signed with the clippers.

If the rest of the league thought what this sub does about Rui, he would be on a $20M+/yr contract right now. People swore after his playoff performance that he'd be getting a raise from the $17M we were paying him.
17
u/VermiciousKnid1981 4h ago
Yup, I was amazed how many people thought Lakers should’ve given him $20+. Wish him well but dude didn’t play defense or rebound, it made no sense to bring him back
12
u/Letsgodubs Warriors 2h ago
Context is important. He's a PF being asked to chase guards on the perimeter because Lebron was too old. Rui is a good post defender but struggles against quick guards. He was also top 3 on the team in boxing out so Luka could pad his rebound stats
2
3
u/VermiciousKnid1981 2h ago
Nah. Watched him for 4 years, he was bad on defense. Was terrible on the perimeter, lost his man repeatedly and was bad in the post. Not sure what you were watching because he never had position.
1
u/Letsgodubs Warriors 2h ago
I've watched him since his college days. He played the 4 at Gonzaga. Was forced to play the 3 for the Lakers. On a team where everyone was garbage on defense, Rui was one of the better post defenders. JJ trusted him enough to play as the primary defender on Jokic.

Bad defender and a bad rebounder, especially for his size.
A 6’8” 235lb forward in his 20’s, who plays 25+mpg, shouldn’t have seasons where he averages less than 5 rebounds per game. That shit was SO infuriating watching him only care about his points in DC. Glad to see that he gave that same bullshit effort in LA
2

u/ZombieCommon4030 4h ago
He’s gonna get overhyped since the lakers didn’t take him back but he wasn’t good on defense and outside of his playoff shooting this season never really contributed much in the postseason
1
u/DietCokeJon 4h ago
Of all players on the pretty woeful Lakers defense last year, Gabe Vincent was the worst at a silly 121.4. Then it was Rui at 119.7. No one else was over 116.
Gabe got booted. Rui was by far the worst defender on the Lakers last year, for the full year.
At 6'8 230 lbs of athletic build, Rui averaged 3.3 rpg. Reaves averaged 4.7.
Rui is an elite shooter, full stop. One of the best in the league. Unfortunately, the Lakers do not need a one dimensional shooter, especially at that position. Luka and Rui can only guard the same caliber of players.
If Rui is not given volume shooting, he doesn't have any other offensive weapons. He becomes a body on offense and a cone on defense.
He's a player with one elite skill. If he can finally round out his rebounding and defense, he would be a great contributer on an elite team. As is, he'll put up points when given volume, on a team without championship aspirations.

Yes, actually. AR is ironically a better defender than him. If you compare their defensive stats Rui is at the bottom 10% percentile on every defensive aspect, and that doesnt include his poor rebounding ability as a Forward too.
3
u/WayAdministrative679 Minneapolis Lakers 4h ago
Yes AR is faster laterally he’s easily a better defender. You’re overreacting to a pre season game
Rui can’t defend off ball, can’t defend laterally, he can only defend bigs, he’s a poor rebounder for someone of his height and weight, he’s not a good player

Rui isn’t a guard
1
u/Agreeable_Cattle_691 Mavericks 4h ago
But that isn’t the point, you don’t have to play the same position as someone to fill the same need specially if that need is 4th option scoring which is what Rui is on the Lakers. If Sexton fills the role of 4/5th option scoring while also being able to run the 2nd string offense then that is more than Rui can be on the Lakers

I wouldn't say Luka stat pads rebs. He just usually guards the slowest unathletic guy on the court which means he's usually posted in the paint. Rebounds naturally fall to him, he hardly even boxes out or fights for a board lol.
Also the other 4 guys on the court would rather Luka get the defensive rebound because he's the best one on the court to immediately make a play if ones available.
I'm not even a Luka fan but cmon
