Who knew the weather could be this thrilling

Post image

In the tense 72 hours before D-Day, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Captain James Stagg face an impossible choice--launch the most dangerous seaborne invasion in history or risk losing the war altogether.

War movies. We've seen them from every angle except...the weather. Andrew Scott is great as Stagg. His performance is subtle when it needs to be and explosive when he needs to be. Brendan Fraser brings on the gravitas as Eisenhower. The pacing is fairly steady. The film is able to build and maintain suspense about the most unlikely thing: weather. You become engrossed in seeing the battles of different opinions and how we'll eventually get to the final decision made by Eisenhower. Good, but not great.

I never thought a movie about weather forecasts could keep me hooked for two hours but here we are. Andrew Scott really carries the tension with just a look sometimes, you can feel the weight on him without him saying anything. The whole premise sounds ridiculous when you explain it to someone, yet somehow it works

I thought the same thing when I saw the trailer. I thought they were scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to WW2 movies. I thought what's next? A story about the cobbler who designed the boots for WW2 Russian soldiers? But the performances were great. Even if the premise of the story is a bit ridiculous. Like there's no real reason to be pushing back so hard on the main character.

I liked this movie. I'm a big fan of Andrew Scott. It's good, but it's one of those movies that takes something interesting, i.e. the weather aspect of DDAY, and tries to drag it out over the course of a full movie. I would love a 20 or 30 minute version of this, it's just difficult to make it last an hour and a half. The movie isn't boring, however.

A 3 hour long epic of the planning and execution of the entire day operation is what I want.

Yes, you could go into deep detail, and make a whole series. But if the focus is just on the weather forecast, it's hard to watch everyone yell at andrew Scott and talk about how stupid he is, only to see the wind start blowing and every is like "my god. He was right all along" and make that last more than 30 minutes

Impresionante película. De lo mejor del año. A quien le guste realmente el cine, que la vea sin dudar.

I watched this. Then I watched Degaulle libertie. In the latter there is a line where Churchill (on D Day) says 'where is that damn weatherman - he promised me a break in this storm!'.

I def knew, grandpa was in the DoJ as a meteorologist during Vietnam and we'd talk about it or watch old footage like the history channel years back.

I liked it but didn’t love Fraser, who I like in general (no pun intended) as Eisenhower. Not sure why. On a different note it’s insane to me that Fraser who is 57 is older than Ike was at D Day

Bought this movie on dvd and liked it. Reminded me slightly of Tora Tora Tora, which tells about pre-Pearl Harbor on the U.S side and the Japanese side. The Japanese obviously were very curious about the weather would actually be and that Go or No-Go for the attack was portrayed well in that movie, though it was an utter tragedy for the U.S. Recommended viewing for war film folks.

Brendan Fraser was miscast as Ike. Too tall, too fat, too whiny. I can’t believe Ike would lose his temper at the meteorologist.

Ike could have a bad temper and was particularly irascible in the lead up to D-Day. It's a myth that he was always genial and even-tempered.
