Digger (2026) – A Brutally Honest Review [NO SPOILERS]
Digger is not an easy watch. It is exhausting and requires your attention throughout its runtime. Most people who have seen or will see the movie will acknowledge that it is not everyone’s cup of tea. That being said, it is the type of movie that is important for cinema because it does not have a straightforward narrative. It is creative and unhinged. It is satire at its finest—satire on an important topic.
Let me list the things that work:
- The writing is top-notch. For a movie with so many dialogues, writing is crucial. The standout scenes that will be talked about and praised heavily rely on the writing, and Digger executes these scenes exceptionally well.
- The acting is super impressive. Tom Cruise nails it, as do Riz Ahmed and John Goodman. Throughout the movie, you almost forget that Digger is Tom Cruise. Makeup plays a role in that, but it is primarily because he plays the role so brilliantly. A speech that he gives had me locked in for every second; it was so intense and so well done.
- The comedy is good. While not many scenes will make you laugh out loud, a few will, and the rest make you chuckle a lot.
- The twist, which I initially couldn't figure out the purpose of or where it was leading until halfway through the movie, made so much sense after the ending. It makes the film much more satirical and deeper. It also eventually leads to an impactful and somewhat haunting ending.
- The cinematography is pretty good. It features a very grayish look, almost as if it is portraying the drained, bleak lives of the billionaires and the president shown in the movie.
Other than these, if I had to point out things that do not work, I don't think I really could, except, as I said, it is exhausting. I think the movie achieves everything that it tries to achieve. Let me know in the comments, though, if you could point out some flaws.
My rating-7.8/10

It seems to me to be a Brazil/Lebowski level BO bomb that becomes important later.

Kinda sounds like how I describe Beau is Afraid. Hard to follow/watch but I like it as a whole. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea

I can't remember the last time a crap movie had so many people making so many posts trying to get people to talk about it.

I think a lot of people who went to see it are genuinely enjoying it. I had a high school friend call me to talk about it for 25 minutes because of the ending. Though the type of person who would go see it opening weekend despite the critics hating it is more likely to really buy into what the movie is going for.
It's a shame because there is 1 aspect of the movie that I think you need to see in theaters to genuinely enjoy but not many people will get that experience. Hopefully it gets the credit it deserves in time

It's paid, they are trying to salvage it by any means possible. I am just going to mute this sub.

My favorite part of the marketing of the film was Cruise playing an old dude that looks like shit but for some reason is really nimble on his feet and energetic.

while I agree it shouldn't be getting dragged as much as it is, it feels like it wants to be a coen brothers film or a wes anderson film in tone, but it's neither as quirky or funny as those and just comes off flat and boring.

This absolutely. This movie really felt “hard to make” and that’s not a compliment.

I absolutely loved this movie. Tom Cruise had such a good run back in the late 90s/early 00s where he played some interesting characters (Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky) but then it feels like it was one Mission Impossible after another. This movie made me remember what a good and charismatic actor he is. I hope he at least gets nominated for an Oscar. And I hope the film gets nominated at least for the screenplay.

People saying it’s exhausting are hilarious. I found it very excellent and easy to watch. Really enjoyed my viewing!

I see there is some campaign going on to promote and salvage this dreck on reddit and everywhere else. Be more creative, maybe start with making better movies.

If there's anything I hate, it's films you have to watch! Can't I just watch a tiktok! Imagine having to pay attention to a movie!

Sounds like it is no where near as good as Birdman or the revenant

It's not but it's still just okay. I am like the only person that is just in the middle. I think it was fine.

It is similar to Birdman in terms of the concept but it is a slow burn with lightning fast dialogue

no twist is going to justify making me sit through a bad performance of a terrible play.

I think it was a masterpiece. I just loved it. I think it makes people want to talk about it after they see it. That's how I wound up here-- because it stayed with me after watching it.
