Yeah, this isn’t 50 Shades of Grey, it’s a dating app and these guys are strangers. I hate that “dom” approach some men take where they just say “Let’s get drinks at XYZ at 8 on Saturday. I’ll pick you up.” or something after either not talking at all before that, or having only exchanged a few words. It’s cringey, like they think I’m gonna be weak at the knees over how assertive and how much of a leader they are and say “Yes, daddy!” or some shit. Wild seeing a woman actually receptive to that, guess there’s someone for everyone.
→ More replies (7)45
u/Overwatcher_Leo 4h ago
Do people actually try to date like that? I found reading that example actually repulsive. This "Let's do x, I'll pick you up". No question if you even want to, just asserting that you do. If somebody talked to me like that, I would not feel charmed, I would feel disrespected.

No fr if I received a first message with date plans (and an unspoken expectation I just go along with it and have no input), I’d be putting that guy under the “massive red flags, share location with parents and three friends before meeting” list if I even dignified it with a response at all. Op should just keep doing what he’s doing cause most women see what this woman wants as a red flag.

As a guy, if I'm messaging a woman a time and place immediately, and she accepts the terms of the date and agrees to meet me instead of a polite introduction and questions that lead me to a better understanding of the type of person I'm talking to, that ain't no woman, that's a giant crustacean from the paleolithic era coming out of the water staring above you with big, red eyes, leaning in to say, "I'm gonna need about tree fiddy."

Yeah, except in OP’s case, he was probably talking to a man with an AI photo for a pfp. Women who want to stay alive and have any dating history aren’t going to make a request or expectation that a guy makes a statement of where they are going and when they are meeting. But guys don’t have to think about safety in the same way (as frequently) so whoever is trolling OP didn’t stop to think about how abnormal this behavior/ask would be of an actual woman.

It is especially nuts coming from women. 90% of women out there are against toxic behavior like being a controlling asshole to women, but there’s 10% of them that seem to revel in it. Gross.

She's doing too much. I can't stand how so many people think they need to play some kind of character on the initial conversation and try to get you to do this weird, preformative back and forth thing with them. Even worse when it extends into the first few dates and you can just tell they're not actually being themselves. It feels like disingenuous hookup behaviour when people do this shit, then it winds down they find out they're not actually compatible. I hate it.
9
u/new-machine 4h ago
I think you did the right thing by working to read the room and getting to know a person before making plans. It’s a safer method for both parties.
10
u/Groovychick1978 3h ago
Please do not start to think that that's even close to normal. Hopefully, someone closer to her can let her know how ridiculous she is.

u/Gaming_Nomad 2h ago
As frustrating as this is, OP, she did you a favour by screening herself out. She immediately showed herself to be shallow and manipulative and, in all likelihood, boring. She was worried about running out of things to talk about on the app and wanted to establish chemistry in person while getting a free meal ticket.
In my experience chemistry is usually obvious even by text and worthwhile people will reciprocate your effort; finding someone you're compatible with will feel like picking up a conversation with the best friend you never knew you had. That's how I found my fiancee and we've been together for almost two years now. We met on Hinge and within two weeks of dating we were pretty much inseparable.
You will find your person too. You might find that you're compatible with multiple people at roughly the same time, which then leads to the anxiety of deciding who you like more and not wanting to hurt someone else's feelings.
9
u/KuromanKuro 2h ago
She doesn’t want an assertive planner, she wants offers from people that will give her the most. Either an expensive dinner or some sort of experience you’ll give her. Greedy shit. You’re lucky to figure it out before you wasted any time or money on them.

I genuinely think platforms should start banning users for rudeness like this.
This happens to both genders too btw— Last time I was single I nearly deleted Tinder because of how many men were randomly mean to me on the app for absolutely no reason at all. I knew probably none of those men would get banned if I reported them, or I couldn’t report them because the unmatched shortly after they said degrading things.
If people can’t log onto these apps without immediately being met with rudeness, it’s a bad user experience.

u/RagingHolly 4h ago
Guy friend of a few years kept pestering me for a dinner date, so I finally agreed.
We get there and everything is fine until the server comes to take our order.
Friend: "I'll have blah blah blah, and she'll have..."
I cut him off saying I'll order my own food. He was trying to order an entrée for me, that I didn't want.
Server: 😬 "I'll give you guys a minute." Walks away
Then it turned into an argument about that's how dates work. I just got up and left lol.

Yeah this is insane.
This being said, I wonder if this is a symptom of dating-app burnout?
I can see that in 3 years of using dating apps, first 2 years I have favoured having around a week or so of text exchange with a guy before agreeing to a date, as a pre-screening process. But this past year I have realised I have kind of a burnout from this and now I get impatient if he doesn't suggest a date after 2-3 days of chatting and I either suggest one myself or jokingly nudge him to do it.
