Infuriatig I can’t eat my dinner
I have a copper allergy, so generally have to avoid foods high in copper, mushrooms are probably the most common trigger for me (they’re high in copper), and one of the few foods to send me into an immediate anaphylactic reaction. And because of the way copper is removed from the body, it can take 2 weeks before I completely stop randomly breaking out in hives. Being a mom of 3, I don’t have time for that.
I picked up a few family sized frozen dinners for nights when I don’t feel like cooking. Broccoli rice and cheese casserole, a family favourite. I went to go spoon some into my bowl, and saw a greyish-brown thing, weird, then I saw another, and it looked like a mushroom. I grabbed the box and first looked at the front, no mention of mushrooms, then I read the ingredients, didn’t see mushrooms listed, so I read it more closely, mushrooms are a apparently an ingredient in rice.
Crisis averted, but now I have to find something else to eat for dinner. At least that’s more food for the bottomless pits masquerading as my children.
Oh and I still have one more of these in the freezer.
ETA: yes I should have read the label (or looked at the picture) to realise that this contained an allergen I wasn’t expecting. I’m allowed to be infuriated at myself (I’m not mad at HEB), I’m also allowed to be an exhausted mom who made a mistake.

I only looked at the name. Sane people don’t put mushrooms in the broccoli rice and cheese casserole, the one time my cousin did for thanksgiving no one talked to her for a month.

Cream of mushroom is often used when making broccoli, rice and cheese casserole. It’s pretty common.

I \would** put mushrooms in mine, but I do understand the disappointment of finding something unexpected in your food you can't stomach. My mom cooked some delicious-looking Italian sausages once, and I spat out the first bite because I didn't know there was fennel in it. Ewwwwwwww! I refer to perpetually hungry kids as 'land piranha'.

Bruh. I can see a mushroom in the picture. What is this?

Have you ever tired grocery shopping with participation trophies? I looked at the name and price, decided the kids would eat it, and bought it. I don’t always have time to read the entire ingredient list searching for hidden allergens. My original planned purchase was discontinued so I just grabbed something else.

Chill bro. I just asked what the actual product was, you didn't show the front. Gotta be real as well, allergies fucking suck but reading labels is something you're cursed with, gotta do it.

Damn dude, I understand not liking other people's kids. But calling your own children "participation trophies" is rough.

.....it may just be me....but I see mushrooms in the picture on the box that you just posted...
Also, I'm not really understanding this line, "I read the ingredients, didn’t see mushrooms listed, so I read it more closely, mushrooms are a apparently an ingredient in rice."
...do you normally see an ingredient and then just skip over everything in paratheses?!? Because if you read it like I would think most people would, you would have saw the mushroom on the 4th line!

Rice in this instance means the rice component contains mushroom (almost like how a risotto would). OP has a deathly allergy and doesn’t take it seriously enough.

I first only read the main ingredients not the component ingredients, like I don’t care if they use powdered skim milk in the cheese sauce. Outside of cream of mushroom soup, you normally don’t expect mushrooms to be listed as a component ingredient. And I’ve never seen mushrooms listed as a component of rice. Now if they had called it mushroom rice, sure, but it’s not a component of rice on a normal basis.

If you have an anaphylactic reaction to foods you have to read the whole thing!!

I’ve kept myself alive this long. Also do you know how many different things are considered high in copper, it’s not like they bother to list it on the nutrition facts. The list of things I can’t eat is a mile long. I was tired, decided to pick something quick to feed the children, and am paying for it by not being able to eat dinner.

I feel you. I also have food allergies. But to keep ourselves safe we have to know what’s in everything we eat. It sucks but you especially can’t be playing anaphylaxis roulette when you have kids that depend on you

- Mushrooms are common in cassaroles
- You can see a mushroom on the box
- I immediately saw mushrooms in the ingredient list

Fellow mushroom-allergy-haver. It's very annoying to find mushrooms in things you think would be safe. Capri Sun recently switched over to a mushroom-based stabilizer/preservative- one of the last places you'd think that mushrooms would be present! (Not that I drink a lot of Capri Suns, mind you, and overall I support the use of fewer artificial preservatives in kids' products especially- but like, who would think that a juice pouch has mushrooms?) We just have to read labels carefully and call restaurants sometimes before ordering- that's really all we can do.

I haven’t had one in years but I guess I never will.

Yup! Also anything that says "chitosan" has a chance of being mushroom derived. Chitosan's an ingredient that's originally derived from crab/shrimp chitin, and mushroom chitosan is the vegan equivalent. And "adaptogen" frequently means mushrooms, so if you have a mushroom allergy, it's best to just avoid those or look up what specific blend is used.
It's also worth finding out if you have a specific mushroom allergy or a fungal allergy in general- I'm lucky that it's just mushrooms. Some people like me have yeast allergies, too. Do you know how hard it is to avoid wild yeast? It's on basically everything.

that’s a bummer. in the future, i think i can even see a couple mushrooms in the picture on the back, in the yellow dish.
copper is a tough one, sheesh. i hope you were able to find a good replacement dinner

Absolutely mildlyinfuriating man. The more mildly infuriating article is an aversion to copper.i couldn't imagine being allergic to a periodic table resident

u/TXSyd 5h ago
It’s a pain in the ass to be sure, like how am I allergic to a damn element? At least I’m not allergic to something like hydrogen or carbon.
Take a gander at multivitamins sometime. My last pregnancy I scoured the shelves at several stores checking the labels on every damn prenatal. In the end I only found 1 that didn’t include copper. I looked like a crazy person sitting on the ground with one of every bottle 😂

You have an allergy and don’t read the list of ingredients on a package before you buy something? Nobody is going to feel sorry for you if you can’t even be bothered to do that

If I had a bad allergy like that I would either be avoiding extra processed food like that altogether, or at least be meticulously reading the ingredient list before purchase. Spend an hour or two a week batch cooking meals and freezing them in portions for the nights you need a quick meal fix.

What's infuriating? That you don't know how to read a label?

If you have an allergy that serious, yes you should be reading the ingredients on pre-made meals

u/No_Trouble_3588 5h ago
Mildly infuriated with yourself, right? You didn’t even have to read the ingredient list, the mushrooms are visible in the picture on the packaging.

I hope you mean you’re mildly infuriated at yourself because that’s on you for not taking that extra few seconds to check the ingredient list when you have a food sensitivity…

I hate mushrooms as a sensory thing, and the amount of foods they sneak mushrooms in is frustrating.
RIP your dinner. Sorry. :/
3
u/TXSyd 5h ago
I loathe mushrooms as a texture thing as well, it feels like recently they’re sneaking them into everything. In this case, they’re not even listed as their own ingredient but as a sub ingredient to rice. I remember once going out to dinner and almost every dish on the menu somehow had mushrooms. Between my sensory issues and allergies, eating out can be a challenge without people deciding to try and get adventurous with their recipes

u/Chaos-Wayfarer 5h ago
Yeah it’s that or not saying something is spicy and then my mouth is on fire!!
I just want to enjoy an easy meal. Is that so much to ask???
1
u/poonmangler 5h ago
Is it all mushrooms? I was gonna say I hate the texture too, but love the flavor - I sometimes fry them real crispy in some oil and they're perfect.
That really does suck dude, that's so many things you can't eat.

It’s truly crazy what companies can get away with not disclosing.

You can literally see mushrooms in the photo onn the box. Sure companies do sleezy stuff, but this isnt one of those times.
