Missing Peace Coffee shops are not your office!!
I just want to enjoy my coffee without feeling like I’m having a quick break at work!
I don’t want to hear about your resourcing issues or
You giving advice to a colleague on how to handle Steve’s poor performance. I’ve even had people hold meetings and job interviews in coffee shops!!
Coffee shops are not hot desk work locations.
At the very least these days every coffee shop will always have one person clicking away furiously on their laptop and taking calls every three minutes nursing that one drink and snack that they bought four hours ago!!
GO AWAY AND LET ME ENJOY MY COFFEE IN PEACE!!!!

Coffee shops have been known as partial third spaces for a long time. As long as a patron is periodically buying something during their long visit and not being overly disruptive I don't really see the problem. It's also a private business so it's up to them to decide what customers can and can't do.

If you go to a public place for coffee you should expect there will be people there.

If you feel our coffee shop shouldn't be used for work based calls and meetings, please speak to Susan the HR Barista in her office (the bit of counter where the sugar packets are)

Damn if it weren’t for my local coffee shop I might not have passed the bar exam. I’m glad my local baristas were a lot friendlier than you! That being said I was quietly studying and not taking loud calls. I was also buying drinks and snacks all day.

Unfortunate company wants me in this or that city from time to time. I have something to do their for like half the day and than need some table to work at. So often, coffee shop it is.

... There's nothing wrong with working at s coffee shop or clicking a mouse... But I draw the line at interviews or calls. Have some shame.

Last time I tried hanging out at a coffee shop, someone came in and set up a whole ass camera and was preparing to interview someone, or something. Podcast maybe. I didn't stick around to find out. People are really annoying

Your fault for having your dick on show ?

What are people supposed to be doing in a coffee shop?

u/teabagofholding 19h ago
Just drink coffee silently and then leave.

u/fishead62 17h ago
standing randomly around the shop with a 1000 yard stare.

u/teabagofholding 17h ago
Id rather people stand in an organized line, not randomly and look down while drinking coffee.

What is Steve doing wrong?
8
u/Half-Cocked-Mexican 21h ago
He's masturbating into the break room carafe instead of doing his job.
8
u/Free_Farm_7736 21h ago
But, whats wrong with that?

Steve went to a Starbucks once, wielding a company-issued ThinkPad.
HR had to be involved, as Steve seemed ignorant of company policy to keep up an appropriate image outside of the company's premises.
Unfortunately, Steve didn't qualify for the MacBook this cycle and has to now drink the coffee at the office that's a little warmer than room temp.

Come on now, you remember learning about good sharing? It’s their office just as much as it’s your place to have a break from work. They’re just as important as you and the only people who need to worry about how much they’re spending are the owners.

u/WhydoIexistlmoa 21h ago
I feel bad for the coffee shops because you know full well these twats spent $10 at most and are now hogging an entire table
9
u/mr-singularity 20h ago
You can think of the tables and wifi as a form of pseudo loss leader. If someone came in for the opportunity to get some work done that is a sale you might not have made otherwise. But since a coffee shop is typically not waited on they probably aren't losing much when people hog a seat anyway. Especially if most of their sales are togo orders and the products have high margins.

Check out the big brain on Brad!
now if you other people could spend a few seconds thinking things through, that’d be great.

u/MajesticKoala3332 21h ago
Well it seems to be included in the business model for some of them. What do you expect people to do when you give them free WiFi and charging points on the tables?

I dont understand the hype of coffee shops as a study or work place
Bro... I need a large desk with no drinks at sight for fear or spilling it on my computer/documents
Plus, I need absolute silence to concentrate
People working on their computers in coffee shops are maniacs

I do a study combined with work. If I would have time I'd study at a cafe, ofc not talking but I'd be "working" I struggle studying at home and a cafe would do the trick.

A coffee shop is one of the best places to get some work done. Taking calls loudly is annoying though.

Seems like coffee shops really are a quick office break
Pop your earbuds in and enjoy your coffee.

Someone I know had a therapist that did his sessions in a coffee shop because he hadn’t rented an office space

Lots of top comments are really dog piling on you, but it sounds like your primary complaint isn’t about people quietly working but instead about people loudly taking calls and meetings. In that case, you’re absolutely right and I’m not sure how people could interpret that differently. It’s like someone watching a video loudly on their phone in a restaurant, it’s disruptive and rude to other people around you.

I don’t care as long as it’s not a bunch of kids running around and screaming like it’s a McDonalds playground. You gotta pick your hours and location accordingly. The outdoor patio is usually the chill spot.

OP: Why are you upset someone made a snack and took 4hrs to eat it?
If you were king, would you introduce "national snacking speeds"
Officer: "sir, you're coming with me, you were doing 1 bite per 10mins in a cheese sandwich zone"

u/Ope_Average_Badger 19h ago
These people are doing what they want or need to do. You should just trying minding your own business.

u/Tiny-Instance322 21h ago
Thank you! Drives me nuts too

u/MickyMalone 21h ago
Why does it bother you?
-2
u/Tiny-Instance322 21h ago
I don’t know. No real good answer. Something along the lines of “ why are using a Starbucks as your office? Go back to your office”
5
u/MickyMalone 21h ago
What if they're trying to work and they don't have an office?
Regardless, why does it bother you? What is different between people chatting about the weather or people chatting about work?

u/CakeHoleKing 20h ago
he can't get juicy secrets about how the neighbours are having sex with a different man each night. Because the worker on the call isn't from Apple.

No.. coffee shops are literally meant to be an office or hangout or whatever
The whole point is you go there they have free WiFi and you do whatever you want and chill and or work

Who's giving advice to who? A worker giving advice to a manager? We have a problem. A manager giving advice to the worker (about how to deal with anither worker)? We still have a problem, as speaking to staff about poor performance is something a manager, or at least team leader, should be doing, and know how to do off the bat.
Besides, listening to and observing this stuff lets you see the level of incompetence among your colleagues and management. :)

I'd make a fake conversation on my phone just to mess up the meeting.

u/CakeHoleKing 20h ago
just reply to their questions as though you're part of it.
"so how are we going to increase profits this quarter?"
"by killing orphans and selling their flesh in a burger van"

u/CakeHoleKing 20h ago
I got downvoted by people who think you should only sell Orphan Burgers in a proper 'posh' restaurant :(

Some coffee shops are indeed designed for that kind of thing. Some are for a more cozy quiet vibe, gotta look around for cafes that suit your vibe :)
