I would buy a mini fridge for my room.

u/MidnightDustBunny 1d ago
The dorm I lived in my freshman year didn’t allow mini fridges in our individual rooms. Woulda been really nice if they did because my roommates were about on this level.

That mini fridge would’ve been hiding in the closet or under the bed, but I’m not putting anything I eat or drink inside of that bacteria infested fridge

Fr, I have OCD and I would just not eat if I had to keep my food in there.
4
u/AmbitionSea3858 17h ago
Lost so much weight my first year of uni due to my OCD/unclean housemates. My parents came to pick me up and were really concerned I'd developed an ED.
2
u/Moezzula 7h ago
I definitely have ARFID as a symptom of OCD. I lose my appetite so quickly over contamination obsessions. I watched a Monster's Inside Me episode as a kid, and was very intrigued, but quickly developed a fear for flesh eating parasites from meat. It didn't help that I already struggled with the texture and taste of prop or beef. Being a vegetarian wasn't concerning to my psychiatrist, they told my parents a lot of kids go through an "animal livers" phase, and my adults accepted this explanation because Steve Erwin was my childhood idol. They didn't take it seriously when I explained that it was definitely more related to the irrational fear of contamination, and not over thoughts of animal welfare, so I didn't get diagnosed until 5 years ago.

Sure but even without a chill RA you just throw a blanket over it once a semester or whatever when they announce inspections. ;)

I had a friend that kept a few things on the outside window sill of their room for the winter, worked just fine.

Word of advice: Never, ever do anyone's washing up for them in your shared accommodation. Just yours, leave the rest alone. It may be a bit gross, but if you do it, they'll just keep expecting you to, and it'll get worse.
Yeah, this is pretty much standard for a shared accommodation uni fridge. Sorry, OP 💔

u/ballbeard 1d ago
My first shared apartment with 2 other dudes in university had what I called 'dish mountain' they each had one half of the kitchen double sink absolutely overflowing with their dirty dishes to the point that I kept 1 plate, 1 bowl 1 fork 1 spoon and 1 knife in my bedroom, and washed them immediately after using or else I'd need to wash one of their dirty dishes to even be able to use anything.
The cupboards stayed bare for the 2 years I lived there, dish mountain was never conquered.
3
u/sec_sage 10h ago
What did they eat of?
4
u/Eplixious 10h ago
My roommate who seems to collect boxes behind the trash can instead of throwing them out, grabbed an old one that had been sitting there for months and ate his frozen pizza off of it.

u/Dapper_Ice_2120 1d ago
I have a brother in law who just straight up threw out his roommates dishes if they were in the sink more than two days or so. (College house, dishes were probably a bunch of guys' stuff who had lived there over the however many years it had been a guys college house- nothing matched, most of it probably should have been tossed a few years- think the kinda stuff even goodwill wouldn't take, etc).
He had a cupboard of paper plates and utensils, and he didn't share except with now spouse and me once or twice. Sounds like an act of war, roommates kinda shrugged and no one really noticed/cared.
They got pretty low before the roommates realized there was only 1- 2 of everything and someone had to wash something or no one had anything.

This is why I bought myself a very nice mini fridge at Costco in my locked bedroom
9
u/QuarterAlternative28 1d ago
Respectfully, this isn’t standard, common maybe, but not standard. They do not have to live like that.
5
u/Pengin_Master 1d ago
I did that when I was with college roommates.
One time one of them got a cake and left it on the counter for weeks after only eating a single slice.
2
u/CartsOfDarkness 4h ago
Psychopaths, wait holy shit.. psychopaths have more self control than me.. wtf.. I could never have just one slice.

My kid has just started uni in a city 2 hours drive from me. Went to visit him on week 2 to drop off some sustenance supplies since he can't cook and just cos I miss him. The state of their flat's kitchen (with 7 flatmates) was gross already. Fridge wasn't as bad as in the post but was heading in that direction. 8 18-year olds... 🙄🤦♀️😂
7
u/notmichaelul 19h ago
Anybody can learn how to cook! YouTube guides, books, literally reading the instructions on the back of the pasta... It's a very simple skill to learn. Hopefully your kid will learn this very necessary skill soon.

I really don’t mean to be harsh but ma’am, let your adult son live college life without you. I can’t imagine how stifled I would have been if my mom came up every other week to visit me in college.

And enough people to afford a weekly cleaning service, they can split the cleaner fees evenly

u/Stock-Cod-4465 3h ago
Agreed. But it was 70% full with finger foods. I don't think anyone cooks there. Seen a 1.5 metre high stash of pizza boxes in the corner, though.
2
u/SeaworthinessOk6789 3h ago
Honestly they probably can't store much more than finger foods unless they're cooking group meals. Cooking requires ingredients, which requires more frisge space lol. Not surprised about the pizza tower lol
2
u/Stock-Cod-4465 3h ago
Yeah. Don't think there will be group cooking to utilise limited fridge space effectively. Lol. They'll manage.

Let me guess, you went away for a while and assumed your roommates weren't wild animals? Similar thing happened to me in college. I went home for a weekend and came back on a Monday to a sink full of dishes. Not the first time, so I just started cleaning them until I picked up a bowl and there were like 20 maggots under it in another bowl full of some goo-looking shit. Put it all in a trash bag and left it on the floor in their room. Never had to deal with a full sink again.
6
u/Cactus_SDK 18h ago
the classic shared accommodation mistake: assuming your housemates would take out the bins, clean up after themselves, won't throw shit at the walls, ect ect while you were away

u/Which-Primary3929 1d ago
Time to get a decent sized mini fridge and have it in your locked room.
4
u/DiorRoses 1d ago
i live with 3 other girls but we share a bedroom 😭 freshman housing but we all go out sll the time and you would not be able to tell from how they look or how they act
3
u/Which-Primary3929 1d ago
Get a mini fridge you can afford and you can buy one of these and add jb weld to the connector on the lock that attaches to the fridge door/wall, jb weld turns into like concrete strength

u/Impossible_Source195 1d ago

also get yourself a mini fridge if you can ngl and dont bother cleaning theirs for them if you do already

Supposedly adults at this age but most college students are still toddlers
4
u/James-Zanny 1d ago
I’m so glad I have had a good couple of roommates. Doesn’t hurt that I have my own mini-fridge.
3
u/CakeHoleKing 19h ago
Just keep your own dishes locked away in your room. ANYTHING with mold on it goes in the trash. Plates, knives, cups, food, food NEXT to moldy food etc.
They'll get the message as the entire kitchen starts getting emptier and emptier, but you still have pans, forks, knives and your own food in your room fridge

My fridge last year was worse. My entire dorm of me and 5 men shared a kitchen. I used on campus dining that was shit at best, and occasionally used the microwave, ate out and had my own mini fridge since day 1. They fucking left shit in that fridge from October/November and it was still there on move out in May. Spills. Cracks. Different kinds of mold growing fighting for territory on the shelving. Smelled like a sewer leak. I told them I didn’t use it once and it’s their responsibility to clean it up. 2 of them left without saying anything and no one did clean it. We all got whacked $75 for a cleanup bill. Fucking SLOBS.

I lived with a very smart auto technician that taught me so much and helped me become the technician I am today. He had a high IQ and mentioned it to me
The house was always a goddamn mess and I got so fucking tired of cleaning up after him, cause he simply wouldn't do it. He actually told me it was annoying how I kept cleaning the house once a month, and that it bothered him
Lmfao, crazy mindset

u/Hizam5 20h ago
It’s hard to fathom both ends of the spectrum. It’s like their brains are so overactive and so focused on other things, the menial stuff doesn’t is a bore. Except they don’t realize all that stuff is still important

u/KurtAngus 20h ago
Right? He was hyper focused on buying and flipping cars, and only that. Only cared about getting more money and fixing cars.
Nothing wrong with that, but bro, you can't live in filth. It's just not normal. His bathroom and room were always a mess too

Maybe it would be better is some colleges adopted some military standards. For example, room inspections. They happen randomly and if get enough hits (unsatisfactory results) they get punished or even removed from the room if it's extremely bad.
