Ruined by Technology Brother In Law asking ChatGPT why I hate AI
Everyone in my family knows how I feel about AI, so this kind of pissed me off. I know he finds it funny, but I don’t like being used as a reason to use ChatGPT. I’ve explained many times why I don’t like AI, and that includes all (edit: Generative) AI not just ChatGPT. I have many reasons why I dislike AI so much, but the concern for our environment is a major one.
Edit: I just wanted to clarify a bit. Number 1, I don’t think using “pissed off” was the right descriptor for how I felt, more so I was just irked by it.
Number 2, I love my BIL even if he can be frustrating sometimes, he has always treated my sister right and I don’t think I could imagine a better guy for her. He’s genuinely a very sweet guy who does things that sometimes are dumb or annoying, just like everyone else.
Number 3, like I said I have MANY problems with AI, the environment being a big one, but there are a lot more such as using AI in any form of art such as movies, shows, books, video games, etc. I don’t think AI can replace real human emotion or experiences that creating such things require. Another is the way ChatGPT specifically in my opinion is being used by people as therapists/friends, it just says what the user wants to hear not what they need to hear and I think that is harming lot of people.
Number 4, I’m not perfect. Of course I have a carbon footprint and have also done my fair share of harm to the environment. It’s impossible not to. I’m not going to act like some holier than thou person because I don’t use AI (if I can help it), but I try my hardest to be environmentally conscious. At the end of the day that’s really all we can do.
So, that’s it. Hope everyone has a good day! Bye! 👋🏼

u/LadyDela 19d ago
I'm working on a degree and I refuse to use AI for anything, especially school. I was curious one day and decided to test Gemini. I gave it a research prompt requiring a minimum of three academically valid, reliable sources that were peer-reviewed and approved by an ethics board. It gave me 5 sources and three of them didn't even exist. When I questioned it, it flat out said "yep, I just made those up". Makes me wonder how many people submit papers with non-existent sources.
60
u/FeelingPlayfulNow 19d ago
Lawyers have already been punished by judges for using AI reports that cite non-existent cases.
Judges have also been caught using AI with false citations in their rulings.
It makes me wonder how long until new precedents gets baked into our system that are established by AI hallucinations that aren't detected instead of actual human considerations.

u/Aururai 19d ago
There has been more than one case of lawyers using ai to write things, and then using them in court. Only the ai completely fabricated cases for argumentation.
23
u/Kthulhu42 19d ago
When the medical notation AI first came out it was an absolute devil for hallucinating shit, and the things it would write got logged onto your file by some secretary somewhere. My husband got written down as gluten intolerant (which he's not) and my daughter (2 months old at the time) was an alcoholic.

The only two LLMs that will not hallucinate sources are Consensus and Scopus Search because their explicit function is to act as an advanced search engine for academic literature and even then they might hallucinate the content of those sources.
The output of a general LLM should never be trusted and will always, without fail, contain at least one error. If you can't spot the error you don't have the expertise needed to judge whether its response is trustworthy or not and it should be discarded.

This is one of the things most people don’t understand about AI. AI is trained with positive feedback (RLHF), meaning they are prepared to circumvent reality with obliging answers. People use it to say “I know I was right” when in reality they are programmed to make you feel exactly that.

My husband is required to use Claude as part of his workflow and while he was sick last winter and working from home I'd see him throw his hands up and go "My job is safe for another day" because Claude would insist on doing something that even I, as a non-coding, tech-illiterate luddite, knew was wrong.

I had to tell mine to stop using "fucking" as an adverb just because I do. It's really weird for a chatbot to come back after asking it a question with "well I looked into it, and the results are surprisingly fucking cool..."
Like wtf, shut up and just tell me how many hotdogs can fit in someone's ass without having to go to the ER, I don't need commentary
24
u/lord_bubblewater 19d ago
Considering the human rectum can stretch to accommodate the size of the average raccoon but taking into account the compressive force the sphincter would enact on the hotdog and structural integrity of the casing I’d recommend freezing the hotdogs. If so an ER visit will most likely occur due to the hotdog receiver getting frostbite of the colon.

It's one of the four big issues with generative AI: sycophancy.
The other three are results accuracy, resource consumption and ethics.
No matter how one likes AI those four points are objectively sound criticisms we can make. One can only ignore them or brush them away, but they remains true and very relevant.

- There is a genuine loneliness epidemic that really took off during the pandemic.
- People like having a portable echo-chamber that constantly agrees with and validates them and their delusions.
- Therapy is unfortunately genuinely inaccessible for a lot of people and I think a lot of disenfranchised people who need legitimate help think this is better than nothing.

47
u/strawberrimeringue 19d ago
This. I have OCD and depression and so many therapists I’ve had have said I need to “be kind to myself” which, yes, self esteem is really something to improve, but also I want to be challenged! I dont think that an individual footprint is comparable to that of ai. A single person, even if trying very hard, cannot create a drought, but a single ai model data centers can. In fact, almost all environental footprinf is created by big companies, aka, the same people who tell us that we need to wash ourselfes with less water or some shit.
