Ruined by Technology My AirPods case doesn’t always charge the right AirPod

Post image

I went to charge it all last night and when I woke up to use them, the right one didn’t have any charge. This happens semi regularly, but just rarely enough that I forget about checking to make sure they are both getting charge.

Same exact thing happens to mine, I use a Q-tip to clean out the case and then it will work for a week or two before it starts getting worse again. Only happens to the right one, if it was only “dirty contacts” then it would also at som point have happened to the left one, but never has.

u/ProgNerIte 25d ago

Finally, someone who understands. I really don’t know why it’s only the right and never the left

263

u/DirtyDozen66 RED 25d ago

Happened to me, had the airpods for 5ish years before the left one kept disconnecting despite being full charge. Then would show 1%. When i reconnected it went back to it’s actual percentage before disconnecting shortly after

I gave in and bought a new pair

83

u/Jackrabbit_OR 24d ago

Same thing happened to me but I bought from Costco. They just swapped them out with a new pair instead of making me go through Apple.

22

u/TonyHawking101 24d ago

That’s a good service. I pay 2$/month to protect from these things, still have to pay a fee, and that’s only because I dropped one off my ear at the dump and it got ran over. I’d rather pay 25 a year than risk needing to buy new ones outright. Apple care for phones is another story.

The two connections at the bottom could have something in the way - Clean to fix

The software in the bud could have fumbled the correct battery reading, from over draining the bud. - Fully recharge the battery, and leave it charging for a while longer, reset the air pods, and drain until low again so it can estimate the correct battery level again.

Hardware is the issue - Beg to Apple for a new ear bud

21

u/No-Call7349 25d ago

I bet he never thought about cleaning it, great idea

2

u/Just_Emu_3041 22d ago

It’s not a cleaning issue. But the contact pin wears out. Either loosing tension or fretting in the surface. Cleaning doesn’t help.

14

u/Snakend 25d ago

Maybe add a thin pad to the top part of the right side of the case. So it pushes down a bit more on air pod.

12

u/Several-Action-4043 25d ago edited 25d ago

I had this same exact issue with a pair of Raycons. It turned out that using cheap USB cables would only charge the left one. Not all USB cables are the same. A lot of the cheap ones won't even move data and just charge. Once I used a full blown, real USB cable, it charged both sides fine.

Checking in for right AirPod gang. 🙋‍♂️What works for me is actually taking off the silicone ear piece and seating it in the case. Charges fine then but it’s annoying.

17

u/marceatan 25d ago

Same thing for me, only the right side.

5

u/FelixOGO 24d ago

Same for me, also the right side

5

u/philm89 24d ago

I use an alcohol wipe to clean it anytime I sweat or just occasionally. Sweat can build up an oxidizing layer over the contacts that can cause them to now charge.

12

u/Top_Sheepherder_5167 25d ago

Actually, plausibly no. It still can be 'dirty contacts' that your personal routine just so happens to impact only the one side. Uneven wear is common side effect of being left/right handed -among other factors.

Now am I really arguing to get into the weeds of if this is an example of that? NOPE. Just pointing this out cause it reminds me of a lady who went to the mechanic cause her car made a funny noise, only when she got ice cream from the grocery store. No ice cream, no noise. Everyone called her crazy cause... how could that possibly matter and how could you possibly make that connection. It was only repeatable when she got ice cream (oh darn...).

Lo and behold, the ice cream was at the back of the store, that extra time did... some mechanical thermal stuff I forget the finer details of, that only happens in the exact use pattern of [leave house -> get ice cream -> start car again]. The ice cream less trips where not enough thermal time to cause the issue.

The ladies car got fixed in the end and I often think about this story when people mention seemingly random tidbits.

Yep, I have 2 pro 2s (1 lightning one USB C) and both do it on the right AirPod.

5

u/BryceNTonic 25d ago

THANK you for this. My RIGHT airpod does exactly this. So not only is it OP... but it's YOU validating my experience. I feel vindicated.

I also feel like I need to get some QTips out tonight.

35

u/VonSkullenheim 25d ago

I gotta give him credit, he noticed MAGA had no artists so he filled the void by writing inane songs about whatever stupid shit MAGA was talking about on nazi twitter. I mean, who can forget hits like "The Devil is a Democrat", "Cancelled", "Woke World", and "Daddy's Home" 😂

Shame, Sober shoes he can be genuine.

2

I've only known him as MAGA. I posted this garbage ironically I guess. Like, "Here's your alternative to whatever 'Leftist music' is", but jokingly, too. Not tryna imply anything about the original jokester.

6

u/D0MSBrOtHeR 25d ago

I genuinely don’t understand wtf happened to this guy. The same mf that wrote Brainwashed and rapped about anti establishment and anti culture wars…is now another fucking MAGA grifter pushing divisiveness. Like…did they get to him? Humiliation ritual? Did he sell his soul?

6

u/coolguyfresh 25d ago

Bruh he was literally rapping about having a white victim complex on his breakout song 8 years ago, nothing about this is surprising.

Rubbing alcohol.

Edit: isopropyl is better

557

u/Dr_Zoidberg003 25d ago

Isopropyl alcohol is technically better for electronics. Rubbing alcohol is similar, but it has agents added to make it less damaging on skin

87

u/LilacYak 25d ago

Huh, I have never run into that but you’re right, at walgreens they sell “rubbing alcohol” with ethyl alcohol and additives but at Walmart for example they only sells isopropyl alcohol diluted with water when you look for “rubbing alcohol” (or some 50% wintergreen stuff which I hope people would know not to use on electronics lol)

38

u/RUk1dd1nGMe 25d ago

I've always used the two terms interchangeably. But I can't ever recall seeing "rubbing" alcohol on an actual label.

u/BanishedFiend 25d ago

2

u/Prairie-Peppers 25d ago

I've had luck in the past asking the pharmacist if they had higher concentration isopropyl behind the counter than the 70% they have on the shelf

2

u/joe-clark 25d ago

Generally I've had better luck finding the 99% isopropyl at grocery stores, could be because the CVS was keeping it behind the counter like you said but I didn't think to ask the pharmacy.

gotta be careful. some types of rubbing alcohol like to corrode certain types of plastic

i don't have airpods so i would assume that Apple is using a better material for it. i do have a set of cheaper ones that have a plastic case and it started rubbing the smooth plastic off

85

u/Feisty-Muscle-7148 25d ago

It's mostly polycarbonate that you have to be careful with IPA on, especially clear polycarbonate windows. Airpods and case are almost certainly ABS, which is fine with IPA (but absolutely do not use acetone on them).

11

It’s a six-day-old account with a “sexy” username using a phrase (“x” is a different kind of betrayal) that I don’t really know how to explain but is very typical for bots. This one will gain some karma then try to scam people with a fake OnlyFans account or something similar.

u/MonkeyBrawler 25d ago

It's difficult to say why some text seems AI, but you really know it when you see it once you're familiar with it. Something about the "different kind of betrayal" in the context of the rest of the sentence is triggering my indicators.

Put a bit of cotton at the top of the case to make sure the pod is being pushed down to charge

4

u/sonicxtacy02 25d ago

As dumb as it is this absolutely worked in my case

13

u/ProfessorOfLogic1 25d ago

Every comment says clean it but I had the same issue even with the clean ports - it’s probably because the charging port is bent inwards from the headphone being placed repeatedly in the case. I took a clothespin and pulled the port outwards at the bottom so that it wasn’t bent inwards and it fixed this problem for me, still good to go a year later. I even popped it out all the way so only the top part was attached to the case and it still worked fine.

14

u/winkablink 25d ago

The gold contacts inside the case at the bottom are springy and push up against the silver contacts on the airpods to charge

This happens to me when the springy not springy anymore and I use any sharp thing around to poke it and make it springy and it works

9

u/DramaLlamadary 25d ago

Springy not spring

springy again spring

Could be a thin film of oil or residure,.mine looks clean, but would frequently do this, after a cleaning session with a q tip, works perfectly Again for a few months

u/CaptainMcSmoky 25d ago

I tried cleaning mine with absolutely everything the internet suggested but the only thing that actually worked was a tiny bit of Wd40

3

u/Tasty-Property-434 25d ago

Same thing happened to me and I opened a support case and they went to Apple support.  Ultimately ended up with new pair.  New pair has lasted 2x as long.

2

u/6425 25d ago

I’ve had this a few times. I needed to very carefully use a cocktail stick and gently lift the gold metal contact slightly upwards to touch the charge ring of the pod when its dropped in there.

2

u/Mnwhlp 25d ago

Small piece of tape in the case to push the AirPod towards the connection or different rubber ear piece if its too big/stretched.

If cleaning it doesn't work, it might be the contacts themselves in the case. Mine had this issue, I used a pick tool and pulled them gently, very gently, outward a bit and never had the issue again

16

u/BreadStill 25d ago

This exactly. I had this issue. Use a small pick and be super gentle. Bend it out just a hair, it fixed my loss of charging in my left bud. I caused the damage trying to clean the contact with the wrong tools. There’s cheap pick/cotton combo tools on amazon and super worth the buy

I've never had this problem with wired earbuds, just sayin'

22

u/Leftieswillrule 25d ago

You’ve never had a wired earbud randomly die on you? Maybe they found developed some awesome technology in the last 10 years, but back when I used wired buds the failure was always a question of when, not if.

5

u/Skellicious 25d ago

I feel like they always break wherever the wire is connected to something.

2

u/Busy_Self_7232 25d ago

Maybe it's because I don't listen to music all that much, or I've just been lucky, but no, I haven't. And I've been using wired earbuds since before Apple killed the audio jack in their phones.

3

u/isopode 25d ago

i listen to music using wired earbuds for several hours each day. when not in use, i jam them into a small pocket in my backpack, filled with other small knickknacks.

i've had them for nearly a decade now. they work just as good as the day i got them, so even when you do listen to music a lot, they're generally totally fine.

i'd even argue they're better for people who listen to a lot of music, since, for me, one of the biggest advantages is that i don't have to worry about charging them. they're always ready to use.

2

u/DukeofAnonymous 25d ago

2

u/Sofia_9356 25d ago

Bluetooth receiver. It's the radio & battery part of the airpods, in form factor smaller than the case. Lasts longer per charge for $20, and you can pick/choose which wired earbuds you want. Most handle audio both ways for microphones as well.

Old people say it's a smaller dumber cheaper ipod shuffle. But the point is that for 1/6th the price you can convert any earphones into wireless versions that can last 2 years or more (I lost my first one at the two year mark). Wired earphones are significantly cheaper, and you won't have to worry about throwing them away when the battery wears down after years of recharging.

Edit: I forgot to mention it's as heavy as 2 quarters, probably all from the battery.

Same, I cleaned the contacts on the bud and case made no difference.

I've never dropped them which would be the obvious cause that it might create a loose-ish connection.

I also have some Skullcandy earbuds which individually show when in the case if they're charging. This is a much better system.

3

u/johnnypoopy 24d ago

The AirPods will show when each is charging if you hold the case open near your phone the UI will show it (assuming you’re using an iPhone). But yeah it’s super annoying I have the pro 3’s on my second pair of them and have cleaned multiple times and it still happens occasionally.

I submitted a sug to Apple that the charging indicator should be split in two, for L and R, se we can visually see if its connected properly. So many times I have put them in my ears to find only one was charged.

2

u/JWils411 25d ago

That's a really good suggestion.

The single charge indicator doesn't provide enough information.

2

u/PatrThom 25d ago

The charge indicator will go dark momentarily to show you that it recognizes you have inserted the airpod. If you insert an airpod and the light doesn't flip, then the case won't know it's there to charge it. The light on the case should do this upon insert and upon removal.

5

u/berzyberzy 25d ago

Make sure all connections are clean because if they aren’t this will happen.

6

u/savage34 24d ago

I was having the same issue. I used 2/3 tiny pieces of painters tape stacked on top of each other and placed (inside) above the bud to ever so slightly push the earbud down and make better contact with the charging pins at the bottom of the inside of the case and
I haven’t had an issue since.

Yep, mine do this occasionally. Gently swab the charging contact in the bottom of the case with a q tip and it should charge again just fine.

Same here. Sucks because Apple products are usually solid.

u/Cupid_Stunt69420 25d ago

I had this issue, even after cleaning with a q-tip. The only thing that worked for me, was rotating the AirPod a couple of times clockwise while inside the case until it was detected. It still happens to me from time to time!

2

u/Cupid_Stunt69420 25d ago

just wanted to add, for me it’s always the right AirPod and never the left!!

4

u/ABetterTeddy 25d ago

I had the same thing happening. I have some “de-oxy spray” i got it for soldering electrical components. I cleaned the bottom of the air tag and sprayer some inside my case and it works like a charm now

7

u/MASerra 25d ago

Mine does this. Even after a good clean, sometimes it doesn't work. The best thing you can do is to add the widget to your phone so you can see if it is charging when you think it is.

3

u/Benana 25d ago

I could be wrong but I read somewhere that you can tell if the AirPod started charging when you put the AirPod in the case and the light on the case briefly dims and then comes back. If it does, it means it's now charging that AirPod. If it doesn't, it means it didn't detect that the AirPod is there.

i was on a trip recently with a fully charged case. i used the airpods for a couple hours at the airport/flight, then set the case, airpods inside, on my hotel table. 3 days later when i went to use them on my return trip, both the case and airpods were at 0% charge. i am still so confused at how the hell that happened.

u/is-this-now 25d ago

Make an appointment at an Apple Store and have them run diagnostics. Depending when you bought, what the issue is, etc., you may get it fixed for free.

3

u/MaHoooz 25d ago

Same thing happened to me. People kept saying to clean it and that didn't work. Used a toothpick to push the connector back in and out. Works fine now.

One AirPod living its best life while the other is fighting for survival 😭

u/sammysweetcheeks_ 24d ago

Q tip and alcohol wipe on the inside of your case should fix this. I had the same problem

6

u/Emotional-Price-4401 25d ago

Every single brand I buy has this problem... companies are so effing cheap a savings of .0000005 per unit moves the needle for those tiny d!k execs.

Wiggle it a bit after putting it back in the case. It's the same for my Pixel buds.

2

u/SaturnCITS 25d ago

My Samsung earbuds do this too. Sometimes the left dies in 5 minutes and the right lasts an hour and sometimes the right lasts 5 minutes and the left lasts an hour.

I've reinstalled the app and seen 100% charged earbuds drop to like 60% after re-detecting charge level, so it seems like a software glitch miss-reading the battery level and stopping early.

u/montybo2 25d ago

I've had this issue with a few different ear buds.

The only ones that haven't (so far) are my Skullcandy Method 360 ANC.

I put a gum wrapper in the top part and then it pressed harder and actually charges.

2

u/Bossikar 25d ago

I tried cleaning the inside of the case with a q tip recently, it helped a lot

2

u/BAKEDxCAKE 25d ago

Sometimes you just happen to get the defected product, with my luck I always get stuff like this. I’m just gonna say it’s a case of bad luck or you just gotta clean your buds n charger case.

2

u/jagenigma 25d ago

Clean the contacts and make sure you dont have any earwax on the buds.

2

u/XosmoS 25d ago

Bro I’m having the exact same issue. The Right AirPod doesn’t charge half the time despite me having cleaned it and the case multiple times. Good to know I’m not the only one.

2

u/So_HauserAspen 25d ago

Many here may not know that only one earbud connects to the device.  The other earbud connects to the earbud that connects to the device.  This is due to Bluetooth limitations.

Because of this, one earbud is using more power than the other.  That earbud will have battery issues earlier than the other one.

This could be the cause of OP's issue.  The earbuds may still be connected while charging which could result in one not charging.

2

u/StDzhigurda 25d ago

My pixel buds pro does the same thing. Very often when I put both in the case it charges only one of them first. But if I keep them in the case long enough it reliably charges both to 100%

2

u/ShitBoxTypeS 25d ago

Thats rightcist

2

u/Afternoon_rough404 25d ago

Surprised no one has said this yet but put the right one in the case first when you’re done using them. This happened to me and just had to start putting a certain one back in first before the other

2

u/Professional_Denizen 25d ago

I had mine in while reading through this thread, and my right one decided to disconnect from the set. It doesn’t charge, doesn’t play. Doesn’t even register on “find my”. Anyway, I can reset it by re-pairing the case, but it gets annoying since it does this multiple times a day. Not enough to replace them, though.

Van Gogh would love this

2

u/southern_byrd 25d ago

Had this happen. No cleaning would fix it. After three warranty trips to the genius counter, I gave up and bought new ones that work fine.

2

u/MofongoDeYuca 25d ago

Had this issue with Powerbeats Pro.

2

u/pirica2800 24d ago

Had the same problem and looked up what to do and read that slightly bending the contact metal so it charges CAN work.

Bottomline, it does work! But you gotta be careful with bending it.

Ear wax issue

u/Liammistry 24d ago

Dirt on the connector

2

u/insomnia4you 24d ago

Same here, I gave up on Airpods and went back to Earpods (already 3rd pair that dies that way).

2

u/himura808 24d ago

I use a qtip and isopropyl alcohol to clean the charging contacts. Works like a champ.

2

u/ACheckov 25d ago

Clean your earpods, clean your case. If there's not a clean contact between that shiny bit at the bottom of the earpod and the bottom of the case, it won't charge.

2

u/DarthKirtap 25d ago

now you have just one left

2

u/TwentinQuarantino 25d ago

These posts are here and on reddit in general so often (with the conclusion - dirty contacts), and always with this brand, so it makes me wonder - do they signalize whether they were correctly connected to the charging case? I have another brand - QCY, and they always light on the earbuds themselves, and also the light on the case, to signalize they were put there correctly and charge. I thought all brands do this. Does this one do it too and OP just didn't notice, or is it a flaw with this brand in particular not signalizing it?

3

u/ProgNerIte 25d ago

The case glows an orange dot when it’s charging. So long as at least 1 is charging, it’ll glow orange, even if the other isn’t getting any charge

Either your earbud or charger on that side is dirty

1

u/Excellent-End1463 25d ago

Post this in AirPods sub and ask what would Dominic do🥀🥀🥀

1

u/luxar94 25d ago

make sure both contacts are clean, even a little dust can prevent them from making proper contact and charging.
