This is discrimination, like actually. Deaf people need accurate captions, there’s no reason to censor words and make them guess. Youtube does this too.

u/Chronoblivion 25d ago

I don't work in TV/film, but I do work for a company that provides captions for the hard of hearing for phone calls. They drill it into us during training that our job is to caption verbatim; it's not our job to editorialize or censor things, and the FCC will crack down on the company pretty hard if we get caught violating that. If the people on the other line are cussing, we're typing out blasphemy and n-bombs exactly as they're said. If the client is having phone sex, we're typing every dirty word no matter how uncomfortable it makes us feel. I don't know to what extent streaming platforms are held to the same legal standard, but it definitely feels dirty to me, if not outright illegal, to censor accessibility features.

2.4k

u/Homicidal_Duck 25d ago

So deaf clients contact you to live-transcribe phone sex for them?

2.0k

u/Chronoblivion 25d ago

Not a direct contact, their phone has a screen to display the captions and connects through our call center system where we caption whatever it is that comes through the line, whether it's phone sex, calls to medical providers or financial institutions, conference calls, scammers, or failing at the most rudimentary phone trees imaginable (more than once I've had calls where they spent 3 minutes failing at "press 1 for english, press 2 for spanish" before the number they called timed them out and disconnected them). Phone sex calls are actually rare for me, but I don't usually work the late shift so maybe that's a factor.

1.2k

u/Crewarookie 25d ago

Wait...so you provide live, as in real time captioning of deaf people's phone calls...I read up on these services and my god, I would never be able to cope with this.

Not because of phone sex, but because you guys are apparently forbidden from any kind of interference by law. Even if the other person is getting scammed or abused to hell and back, or is suicidal and whatever help line they're on is failing to help them, you can't do shit because that would be interfering and result in your termination...

It's such a crazy situation, because I fully understand the idea: you are transcribers and provide exact equal service to deaf people as a normal phone line would, without any discrimination to their autonomy, but emotionally it is brutal. I wouldn't be able to cope at all.

505

u/nikkijang63 25d ago

I worked either the same or similar job as the other person and yes, it was very diffocult to caption when people were clearly getting scammed. I'd have to caption a phone call that was one to three hours long very regularly that was an elderly person likely getting all their information stolen, social security number included. it was horrible. couldn't do anything about it except caption it.

I did like the job though. it was difficult emotionally sometimes and hard to stay focused many times because it was real time captioning and we also weren't allowed to have anything to keep us busy/awake so people would fall asleep often. we weren't allowed electronics or paper. we could have things like crocheting and puzzles, but it was hard to do all day everyday.

I still would do it again though. people need captions and it was nice to do it. I only stopped because the entire department got laid off unfortunately

178

u/ramriot 25d ago

Outside of the call I would hope there are procedures in place for a) emotional support & b) to confidentially report situations that could potentially involve you or the company in legal retribution.

184

u/JediWitch 25d ago

There's supposed to be a counseling line for us but we aren't allowed to give any true details about what we heard because that's a violation of privacy. So the one time I actually tried to use the counseling service for an extremely horrific call it became clear very quickly it wouldn't actually do anything to help me. So I've never bothered again and it's now been years, don't even know if they still offer counseling.

37

u/mybluecathasballs 25d ago

You'd think you could talk about it openly as long as you didnt use names or other identifying information.

u/nikkijang63 25d ago

as far as I know, there was nothing provided for support for us other than just talking to our managers. I genuinely don't think they did anything about the stuff on the calls but who knows. they were all recorded and most if not all were reviewed by a QA team because we were scored on random ones to make sure we were accurate enough, so maybe the people going over calls had more information/were allowed to do more than we were. no idea.

I know it was the same when I worked at Airbnb and it's what stopped me from working there because I had a mental breakdown. we "legally weren't allowed" to call the cops when a host threatened to harm his guests directly to me because there was no "evidence" other than him threatening them and me. they could only "legally" call the cops if there was already a crime committed. apparently. I wonder if it's the same for the captioning companies. it's stupid. thinking about that Airbnb still gives me anxiety.

90

u/Fluffy_is_Bored 25d ago

I needed that smile. Thank you.

155

u/PinkOneHasBeenChosen 25d ago

I don’t work in that job, but in the case of a suicidal deaf person, I’d probably contact either them or a better helpline later. Because presumably the “no interference” law only applies during the phone call.

151

u/Crewarookie 25d ago

I doubt you can call the number that you were transcribing for without reprecussion, but I might be wrong. Another helpline tip might be a good idea, but even that doesn't solve the emotional burden problem. Imagine you just have to sit there and transcribe someone's emotional turmoil as some kind of machine.

31

u/JediWitch 25d ago

I recall from my training being told it is expressly forbidden to use any information gained during the call to contact the caller outside of it. At very minimum it's a fireable offense if not an actual crime.

11

u/Crewarookie 25d ago

I'd advocate for commiting such a crime to drastically help a person ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ another reason I wouldn't do this job

I can confirm, scam calls are a daily occurrence. Most of them get hung up on, so it's not every day I hear someone clearly falling for the scam, but that still happens to me probably a couple times a month and it's heartbreaking every time. But I've had a call or two that I believed to be a scam at first but after 5 or 10 minutes I had enough context to realize it was legitimate tech support, so I understand the rule against interfering, because I would have been wrong if I'd gone with my gut reaction those times.

I work in film, delivering content. I have on multiple times had to correct captioners who corrected the speaker's grammar in the caption. That is so far outside your role.

103

u/Mulyac12321 25d ago

I've noticed this becoming a growing trend lately. I watch a lot of films/series from Ireland, we have our own dialect here with some noticeable grammatical differences and I've been seeing so many whole sentences just changed just to fit "standard" English. I'm assuming they're being captioned outside the country or something. Irritating af.

39

u/SouthIndependence69 25d ago

I played a game where all the characters were Scottish and it has two different subtitle settings. One that has the lines verbatim and one that translated it into regular English, and it defaulted to the translate version. Had to change it back to Scottish to learn at those fun slang words

18

u/ClannishHawk 25d ago edited 25d ago

And those grammar differences aren't just a quirk of fate, they're remnants of the Irish language and precolonial cultural concepts of things like time. It carries so many aspects of our cultural identity and how that affects our conscious an subconscious use of language, that it feels dangerously close to a form of cultural erasure when it is "cleaned" to fit the standards of our former colonial oppressors.

u/DathomirBoy 25d ago

I notice a lot that captions shorten or change the words of a sentence, even if the meaning is the same. I think that shouldn’t be allowed. Like, interpretation should be word for word

10

u/InvidiousPlay 25d ago

This may be trying to solve a problem. People can speak a lot faster than most people can read. We can also, generally, hear two overlapping lines at once but we cannot read two lines at once.

So caption standards have a rule called characters per second. Which is to say, long lines need to be displayed for longer. Which is great if you have all the time in the world, but if people are talking quickly or overlapping it can literally be impossible to show everything without some of the captions appearing and disappearing faster than anyone could read them.

So sometimes you have to shorten it while capturing the essence of it, because it's better that you read a slightly truncated line than failing to read an accurate line.

Also, no caption is going to be 100% accurate, sometimes the captioner (and, increasingly, the AI) makes mistakes.

My mom is deaf and uses one of these! Thanks for what you do. It makes it really great when I call with her for her to read the captions there while we talk.

For personal reference, how do you all handle words you might not be sure on how to spell or know what they mean or games? I'm a researcher who looks at games and gamer communities. I was working on a project with gacha games, and my mom thought I said "gotcha" the first few times I said it, apparently. I think I spelled it eventually?

Is there any sort of like, support or lookup or something you all get?

Hope you get paid well for this. It seems like a potential pain, especially when the deaf individual is talking to someone who doesn't understand why there is a delay in response.

20

u/JoveyJove 25d ago

I did this in college! We used Dragon speech-to-text software, and we were able to edit the last three lines with a keyboard for any words that didn’t come out right. After a while, I knew words that wouldn’t/couldn’t be transcribed

I worked on subbing for broadcasters/streaming services. Before pushing the subs, we submit them for proofreading. I used to argue a lot with the proofreaders about swear words. For example, if a character said "Motherfucking cocksucker!", id always aim to translate as accurately as possible - the proofreaders, who were usually middle aged stay at home moms, often corrected my translation to something like "Jerk!". When I asked them why they kept doing it, they would say "oh but it looks so bad like that". Like, dude THAT'S LITERALLY WHAT HE SAID.

I don't have much faith in the FCC to correctly enforce rules anymore. Besides Amazon has enough money to get away with being shitty like this.

18

u/PhantomTissue 25d ago

lol pretty sure I worked at the same place. I remember listening to one call where it was some woman cussing out her boyfriend with liberal use of the N word. So of course I had to say it. A lot. Had a black woman sitting next to me giving me a weird look when she first heard me but all I could do was shrug and point to my headset. She laughed and was pretty chill after that

I think it should only be censored in subtitles if the audio is also censored. Why the fuck would they censor subtitles on uncensored audio.

404

u/btspacecadet 25d ago

Yeah, and if the audio is censored it should be clear in the subtitles. Like "You're such a b- [high pitched tone]" instead of "You're such a b****"

21

u/Sea-Antelope9778 25d ago

It’s because they’re using AI to make the captions and AI is trained to be inoffensive and advertiser friendly

16

u/Moss_Echo 25d ago

I hate when YouTube's auto captions do this shit. When someone says fuck they'll just show it up as "[...]", which means that they know exactly what's being said (because they're not typing "duck"), and they're fine with the audio of it being on their platform, but for some reason showing it in the caption is crossing a line.

18

u/rustajb 25d ago

I used to be close friends with a translator for the deaf. He was very clear that you are never to alter or censor the words being translated, it's discriminatory and infantilizing. I get pissed off all the time watching captions lately. YouTube is super censorious. If I were deaf I would find the platform almost unusable.

11

u/nothingbetter85 25d ago

I have minor hearing loss and have used subtitles for most of my life. There have always been some inaccuracies, mostly with live programs where the subtitles would need to be added pretty much on the fly. It’s gotten far worse in just the last two years though. I firmly believe that all of these streaming companies have switched to AI driven text to speech just like Google did with their YouTube auto-generated subtitles. Text to speech and AI does this type of thing all the time, not a person actually listening and writing out the subtitles or captions, unless the program actually bleeps it out. There’s no oversight and people are just stuck with this just absolute crap when they have diminished hearing because we’re in the “age of AI”.

119

u/Linesey 25d ago

Indeed.

Personally, i hate subtitles and keep them off whenever possible, so I have no personal dog in this fight.

But the very concept drives me fucking nuts.

Subtitles should be an exact transcript of what is heard. Word for word accurate, No censorship, no weird edits, honest to god accurate. obviously reasonable additions for captioning non-word audio.

If, a service wishes to provide as an option censored subtitles, that’s fine. but it needs to be an option, and the default needs to be real subs.

Much as subtitles benefit folks who are crunching their chips too loud to hear, or whatever else, they are first and foremost an accessibility aid, and must be treated with accuracy and fidelity to the source.

Now, if the audio censors something, of course the subs should too. but that’s different.

69

u/just_a_person_maybe 25d ago

I've seen a bunch of content creators censoring their subtitles with jokes, like swapping out "asshole" or "idiot" for the name of a politician or something and it drives me nuts for this reason. Sure, maybe the joke is funny, but captions are not the place for jokes. No one hides jokes in alt text for images. No one should be putting funny spins on captions. They're for accessibility, not comedy.

Also, I hate the stupid "speaks foreign language" shit. That's not equal access.

27

u/Meeping-Meeps 25d ago

As someone hard of hearing I feel this super hard. There's this one popular YouTuber that does his own captions, which is great on paper, but they are also not correct and filled with jokes, with every comment talking about how "funny" it is and no one taking into consideration what captions are actually for, as much as I enjoy their videos I can't watch them without a lot of difficulty

153

u/anjschuyler 26d ago

oh, I was just watching Chicago on Crave and they did this constantly. (One line was changed from 'Go to hell' to 'Take a hike.' They changed 'shit' to 'spit') It was so frustrating because I know that's not what they're saying. It must be so annoying for HOH/deaf people.

89

u/gomax6 25d ago

HOH here, can confirm it’s maddening, hell, there are shows out there where whatever they used to make the subtitles isn’t even close to the English audio so I literally can’t watch some things without going crazy, I hear enough to be able to pick up on the audio so when the subtitles differ in any way it just sucks since it’s not the same words and I have to do mental gymnastics to link the two together

24

u/PickledCorvid 25d ago

Not HOH but I have noticed this especially with Netflix shows that are translated. The English dub and the English subtitles are COMPLETELY different translations, so much so that it changes the characters personalities and tone of the show. It baffles me why they would even bother to translate it twice and why the two translators seem to be at odds with each other. Also hard to watch because you can’t use both subtitles and dub, you have to pick one.

22

u/Beaticalle 25d ago

Translations are a different thing. Translated subtitles have more freedom to be accurate to the original dialogue, while dubs often try to match the cadence and lip movements of the actors' speech, so that ends up causing differences in translation. If you're watching the dubbed version, though, the subtitles should be accurate to the dub for consistency like you said and it's a big problem if they don't.

The correct answer for others wondering: "You were supposed to be a pervert." Jack Reacher. scene: https://www.tiktok.com/@moviedigest1/video/7254984556346969349

u/Ramblonius 25d ago

PERVERT? There are literally a dozen swear words starting with p that you would have to go through before you would ever even consider pervert. This isn't just insulting to anyone who needs subtitles, this is actively confusing.

120

u/petrichorax 25d ago

'You were supposed to be a pussy'

Only one I can think of, but yeah I hate this too.

That and youtube/tiktok demonitizing people for saying 'suicide' or 'corona virus' making people have to come up with stupid fake words for things like 'unalive' and 'unknown virus of unknown origin'

81

u/djm03917 25d ago

The spread of the word "unalived" makes me, probably irrationally, angry. Especially when I'm on reddit and I see a post about suicide and there's people arguing and using the term "unalived themselves". It feels so disrespectful and demeaning to me. I've known someone who did though, so maybe that's a factor.

47

u/YouMisssedTheTypo 25d ago

I don't think it's irrational, I think that phrase is disgusting and unimaginably disrespectful. If I killed myself and someone said that about me, I'd haunt their ass. It sickens me how such an important and serious topic is spat upon because it might theoretically drop ad revenue on our fucked internet where everything needs to be monitized always.

14

u/Vorpeseda 25d ago

There's absolutely ways to talk about something respectfully without actually saying certain words, people have been doing that for a long time.

But these new terms come across as especially insulting and mocking. I assume some degree of malicious compliance is the point, since for the viewers rather than the algorithm, just using the actual words is less offensive.

10

u/Outside-Pear9429 25d ago

No you're absolutely right and I feel the same. That and "grape" and probably others. It trivializes some very serious issues that warrant being talked about like adults, and I doubt it even avoids triggering anyone since people are still very clear on what's being discussed. And in many cases I don't think people are even doing it to avoid harming anyone, at this point a lot of internet users are just doing it to be cute or funny or whatever the hell reason people use other slang. I wish I had the authority to ban anyone using those words in spaces where it's not even necessary.

Once they get enough complaints about the asterisks making it unreadable, they will start using word substitutes like "grape" and "pew pew".

So deaf people aren't allowed to "hear" swear words anymore? That's literally discrimination

Edit: removed irony, because it's not ironic

27

u/Pink-frosted-waffles 25d ago

I remember reading that you can contact the ADA office and file a complaint about that.

Are they beeped in the audio? if so, it makes sense that there is parity in the subtitles. If not - that's weird/infuriating to censor one and not the other.

"but think of the childeren!.... no not those ones, do nothing about them, we got it"

Yeah, it's pervert. They set him up at the bar, they told her he was a perv and she was sent over to his table as bait, except he didn't fall for it.

Utterly stupid all this over-the-top censorship, regardless of which platform. Verbal censorship, text censorship, image censorship, individual letters, words. Some sentenced are almost impossible to decipher due to all the blanked-out words. Not allowed to say killed, gotta say un-alived etc, etc.

Sexual assault. Can't say it, text version has to be censored. blah, blah, blah.

Netflix skips over words like this all the time. Sometimes they even skip words or adjust phrases that have no swearing. They should have some respect for the writers and the audience, but at least they're consistent.

u/Quiet_surprise79 25d ago

I haven't subbed to Prime or netflix for a while and I keep seeing more and more reasons to be happy about that. The FOMO is totally gone.

If the word isn’t bleeped it shouldn’t be censored.

13

u/SelectSympathy5718 25d ago

If it’s some kind of oh no think about the children, couldn’t they just censor some of the vowels in the word p*rv*rt. it’s clear for adults and not for children. What’s p***** supposed to be?

Imo, it shouldn't be legal to provide captions which censor words that aren't censored in the audio. Infantilizing disabled individuals should count as a violation of protective laws that prevent discrimination. If someone who can hear the film can know what the word is, there's no valid reason to leave someone who needs captions in the dark.

If I had to guess, these subtitles are made by an AI and the AI has a no no list in order to prevent it putting bad words where they dont belong. Putting them back where they do belong would require either human intervention or better AI, and both cost money. So its cheaper to just censor all of it.

8

u/CuttingOneWater 26d ago

isnt "pervert" like the tamest possible way to say that sentence? its not like an unnecessary curse word or sm

10

u/coco_melonFAN 26d ago

Depending on where you live you can report it for ableism.

9

u/SaintOfPride201 25d ago

Hate this padded-walls ass world we live in now. These are shows meant for adults to watch, stop infantilizing adults and let us see the fuck word.

If they can show skin-slapping tiddies-bouncing extremely graphic depictions of sex, disgustingly gory blood and guts, and depictions of death, suicide, and other heavy themes, they can let us see the goddamn fuck word.

9

u/ST0H3LIT 25d ago

Don’t you know? Us deaf and hard of hearing people are too delicate to read certain words. Our eyes could fall out!

8

u/Ardyanowitsch 25d ago

I'm trying to decipher the censored word. Unfortunately it's not pigeon. One letter too short.

I bet there is a tv broadcast deal where those words are required to be censored and they used that file for the subtitles. Streaming services are bad about using the wrong English subtitles, but usually it’s just dialogue mismatches.

Amazon also does not have a viable way for deaf people to contact Amazon Locker Support. There is only a phone number, and the phone number has no RTT/TTY option. There is no chat support offered for Amazon Lockers. They offer no accessible option for deaf or hard of hearing people, which is also discrimination. Additionally, the Amazon Locker Support does not seem to understand what a deaf or hard of hearing person even is or what their needs are. I had the most frustrating experience trying to help my HOH Grandma with an issue related to an Amazon locker. They kept asking to speak to her and I repeatedly had to explain that she cannot hear, but they repeatedly did not understand that.

Amazon does not care about and discriminates against deaf people in many ways.

This is especially ironic because Amazon produced the movie “The Sound of Metal”, a movie about a deaf man and his journey entering the community and coming to terms with his new diagnosis.

I hate Amazon so much.

6

u/saviorofGOAT 26d ago
