Ruined by Technology When finishing a movie on Prime you get 8 seconds before another movie is automatically played.

Post image

Just finished watching Dune Part 2 on Prime. I really like the movie and I want to feel the emotions and music that is at the very end of the movie. I want to listen to Hans Zimmer’s score and talk Dune theory instead of having to quickly find the remote.

Jeff Bezos wants me to automatically be watching another movie on his streaming service and he graciously gives me 8 seconds before it starts playing. Most of the time I have to dig around my couch for the remote to quickly find it and click on the button that says I actually want to watch the credits.

You know what? I actually feel you and wholeheartedly agree with you. Sometimes you just finish a movie and want to sit in silence to process everything you just saw. That annoying timer ruins the whole experience because you have to get out of the screen or have another movie begin. Both things ruin the experience.

another win for physical media

418

u/SudhaTheHill Aug 29 '26

I am afraid that someday they will stop making players and automatically force everyone to streaming. I know my fear is irrational.

u/sevinup07 Aug 29 '26

Nah there's enough of a hobbyist community around it that the technology will persist one way or another. It is just becoming more specialized and niche and therefore expensive.

58

u/SudhaTheHill Aug 29 '26

Which is another way they’re forcing people to streaming.

32

u/sevinup07 Aug 29 '26

Of course but do they really have to at this point? It's already the norm and how the vast majority of people consume their media.

21

u/SudhaTheHill Aug 29 '26

You’re right. I have set up my own Plex server for movies that I absolutely love so I never lose them and can access them from anywhere.

9

u/-__Ellis__- Aug 29 '26

I setup my own jellyfin server a long time ago and I've been loving it, I've added quite a few plugins and automated most stuff so I rarely have to maintain it anymore, I can just watch what I went, when I want without having to pay a subscription to a company I despise.

If you have or can get any hardware with a bunch of storage, I'd certainly recommend setting a media server up

2

u/bonniesansgame Aug 29 '26

what plugins do you recommend? we have a very fresh jellyfin server we are slowly building. still have a lot of our movies and shows to rip to it

5

u/-__Ellis__- Aug 29 '26

It more depends what you want, i really like media bar since it shows random films at the top (sort of like netflix's bar thing), media cleaner helps clean up old, unwatched films and helps me save storage as I only have 2tb currently so if you have a low amount of storage but always want to add more, it could be worth looking at

Home screen sections is nice as you can change the layout of what's displayed, eg you can have a section for recently added movies, recently added series, etc.

InPlayerEpisodePreview is a good plugin if you have series on yours since you can go on it when watching a show and see what episodes are next with their description, etc.

Intro skipper is good if you don't like watching introductions to shows and I like jellyfin enhanced as it gives a lot of features (eg if you have jellyseer setup then you can make it show the requests when you search for something, "maintenance mode" and a lot more.)

For external software, I have Radarr, Prowlarr, Seerr and Qbittorrent for downloading movies/shows, I setup Bazarr in order to automatically get subtitles for media.

I can't think of anything else that I'd recommend so do as you wish with this very long comment of information and have fun setting it up.

Tl;dr: media bar, media cleaner, home screen sections, InPlayerEpisodePreview, Intro skipper, JellyfinEnhanced and external software: Radarr, Prowlarr, Seerr, Bazarr and Qbittorrent.

I mean, they're already limiting the publishing of physical media like movies and games, and launching wholeass gaming consoles that don't even have a disc drive💀

8

u/theybalduredthegate Aug 29 '26

Look at sony and the playstation. Your fear is not irrational.

5

u/W0rmEater Aug 29 '26

The bigger problem is when they stop making the discs. Atleast the players can be restored and will be sold on a second hand market

5

u/Gilgamesh107 Aug 29 '26

That's not irrational that's literally what they plan on doing

5

u/hellzyeah2 Aug 29 '26

They already are on gaming consoles

2

u/Doogiemon Aug 29 '26

I use to download media because I assumed having my own server was beneficial. Pretty 4k and so on, I amassed 48 TB in data from movies to TV shows some of which I might be the remaining few to have.

Live stream pirating made me stop and put my hard drives away in the basement because I was just wasting my time with how great piracy has become. It's always evolving and me spending an hour of my day downloading and storing media I will never watch just felt worthless.

I have Amazon Prime and I still watch pirated Amazon shoes because it's ad free and I dont have to worry about it auto playing the next episode.

4

Yup. When the service is better for pirates, why would I pay?

4

u/Mikhos Aug 29 '26

yeah we sat through the credits and then let the DVD menu play for 2 hours looping the same 45 second audio clip like god intended

7

But I don’t want I own everything I ever watch

And if the library doesn't have it, sail the high seas

2

u/jaerie Aug 29 '26

That would take you back to the menu, you don't get silence either

2

u/RabitHoleDiver Aug 30 '26

Something about passing out during a movie and the title screen playing for hrs in the background. Haha takes me back to my youth.

3

u/updoot35 Aug 29 '26

Or just turn this off? This is a feature you don't have to use.

Sometimes you back out of the movie and have it's trailer start playing, back out to the apps main page and have a suggested trailer start playing, the back to your fire stick home screen and have ANOTHER as start playing. Jesus Christ it's hard to just find a blank background nowadays

17

u/alphazero925 Aug 29 '26

You can turn off auto playing in the menus to prevent that. It's one of the first things I do whenever I set up a new device (why the fuck is that a per device setting) because I despise it as well

7

u/Less_Party Aug 29 '26

Yeah Prime Video is real bad about that, there's really just NO place you can put your cursor that doesn't result in a loud ass trailer playing.

Yeah they completely ruin that end of movie moment where you just want to stay there and take it all in

3

u/Hind_Deequestionmrk Aug 29 '26

Indeed, they entirely ruin the films end while all you want is to let it sit and enjoy the processing of it all

11

u/Beautiful-Tie-9857 Aug 29 '26

It can also ruin the ending of a movie, cutting off the last beat before it's intended to be cut.

3

u/Xora005 Aug 29 '26

This irritates me soo much. Right as the after credits scene sets up a punchline it cuts to the next episode.

I hate it.

5

u/frecklejam Aug 29 '26

19

u/ElusiveGuy Aug 29 '26

Yup.

To me passenger implies someone they're responsible for transporting. Customer implies I'm just a source of revenue. It feels so gross.

3

u/frecklejam Aug 30 '26

My thoughts exactly. Need to remind us plebs where their place in society.

3

u/OverlordWaffles Aug 29 '26

IT Management at the last 2 companies I've worked for call our users "customers" and I hate it. We're internal IT by the way, not external facing nor an MSP.

They're not customers, they're end users

6

“Movies that their producing companies paid us to tell you to watch that aren’t even close to the movie you just watched”

6

I mean it seems fine to me, I can’t think of a ton of other words they could use, I guess “viewer”?

5

u/Szeli94 Aug 29 '26

A rephrase to "You may also like" would be much cleaner.

The worst part is the timer starts when the credits roll. Some of us want to watch the credits.

This is particularly frustrating when watching a movie with a toddler who both likes the credits and will be disappointed if another movie starts and we have to stop it right away.

145

u/BubblesZap Aug 29 '26

It bothers me every time, lot of the time the movie just ended with something impactful that you're supposed to sit with while the credits start so immediately having something shoved in your face takes you out of it before it's time.

Like think of Infinity War's ending hard cut to credits and not getting to just sit with that in the void for a minute really hurts it

29

u/lockjawshortman Aug 29 '26

Exactly. That nice feeling drains out of my body as I fumble around for the remote racing against the clock. Sometimes I want to listen to the music too.

158

u/HurricaneShane Aug 29 '26

I work in the film industry. I watch the credits every single time I am in the theater.

It bothers me so much when streaming services skip the credits, or go quickly into another show/movie.

I not only watch the credits out of respect, but also I am often curios where something was filmed.

30

u/anuthertw Aug 29 '26

Im not in the film industry but I always watch the credits too while digesting the movie. That and I like to find extremely specific titles for people like "depressed swamp girl with rifle #3".

13

u/meissatronus Aug 29 '26

I work in VFX, it’s ridiculous how hard it is for some reason to just…let the credits play. Let me find my friends for god’s sake

8

u/FemtoKitten Aug 29 '26

Me annoying my friends being excited to see who I know on the pre-production and visual development rather than getting up to go

17

u/Itherial Aug 29 '26

I mean, that is likely because the overwhelming majority of viewers do not care to see the credits and will go out of their way to skip them.

15

u/yuvi3000 You know what's infuriating? Unfinished fla Aug 29 '26

This is absolutely correct, so what they should do is give viewers the OPTION to set auto-skip on. Or even have it as the default and give viewers the option to turn it off.

Making it the standard for everyone and having no option to turn off that function is the actual problem.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Lymi123 Aug 29 '26

Having the option to skip credits are not the same as it automatically happening or making it hard to watch them.

People have already forgotten a time where nobody stuck around in theaters at all except for maybe one or two people due to mid/post credits scenes not yet being a thing.

2

u/Hereiamhereibe2 Aug 29 '26

For real, i think Pixar was one of the first to make credits interesting in any way with the Toy Story Bloopers.

2

u/Phineasfool Aug 29 '26

Cannonball Run from 1980 did it.

2

u/Efficient_Dress_6101 Aug 29 '26

That may be true, but the overwhelming majority of viewers also do not want to watch a random movie 10 seconds after they finish the movie they chose to watch, so it's not about what the viewers want anyway

Do you know the amount of end scenes I’ve missed in Rick and Morty because of the timer on Hulu? They’re like impossible to get to even if you turn off the timer. It’s like figuring out the puzzle of a video game to get the clicks right

30

u/Unknown1776 Aug 29 '26

I was watching the good place earlier this week and it skips things so quick you can actually miss the twist/important stuff from the end of the episodes sometimes.

12

u/HellPigeon1912 Aug 29 '26

I've been watching Angel on Disney plus and same, it's timed badly enough that on more than one occasion it cuts off the end of the episode

5

u/GuyWishPartakeViolen Aug 29 '26

Been watching Abbott Elementary on Disney+ and same thing is happening to me. Each episode has one final gag which sometimes leads into a plot thread and I have to rapidly back out to not go into the next episode.

4

u/Huitlacochilacayota Aug 29 '26

4

u/TartRose13 Aug 29 '26

I HATE this feature with a passion. I want to sit in the credits, listen to the music and digest what I just saw. Having to hurry and grab the remote so that it doesn't skip to something else completely takes you out of that reverie. Why only 8 seconds?? At the very least make it 30 seconds. And then if I don't get to the remote in time, it switches to something I would never have any interest in watching. SO frustrating.

79

u/LieutenantLeftovers Aug 29 '26

Or at least wait till the very end of the credits. But no….our evil overlords want us always being fed content to we stay docile. Just my theory though

10

u/AnotherOrbiter Aug 29 '26

Sure they added this around the same time they added adverts (in my country atleast) so to me it felt like a stat booster for their stock meetings, like look out viewership is at all time highs! No people just fell asleep or left the TV running

3

Hell, 30 seconds doesn't feel like it would be enough most of the time. Having to go reach for the remote disturbs that sitting and processing.

What I hate the most is when either the next movie starts, or you accidentally back out of the movie trying to cancel the autoplay, you then try to go back to the original movie to watch the credits, and it plays the movie from the start again.

So now you have to either fast forward all the way to the credits or just give up. Both things ruin the experience.

26

u/Muddled_Opinions Aug 29 '26

I hate features like this. Even streaming shows like Rick and Morty, that ALWAYS has an end credit scene(some of them can be quite long), it shrinks the window to ~15% and suggests another show, as soon as the credits roll.

218

u/wild_bronco96 Aug 29 '26

This is an auto play setting that can be turned off.

56

u/Environmental_Bus507 Aug 29 '26

40

u/wild_bronco96 Aug 29 '26

I think it all falls under the same setting unfortunately

32

u/BrosefDudeson Aug 29 '26

3

Go to the Amazon Website and log in to your account.

Navigate to Prime Video.

Click your Profile icon in the top right corner and select Account & Settings.

Click on the Player tab at the top of the page.

Turn off Autoplay (for the next episode) and Autoplay trailers.

Not sure if this only works for TV shows or if it works on movies, as I havent tried it

3

u/ZestyPyramidScheme Aug 29 '26

You can turn this off. I had to do it with Hulu because a lot of shows I watch have post credit scenes, and auto play will play the next episode before the credits end or it will jump to the next episode in the middle of the post credit scene

3

u/aWildBendyStraw Aug 29 '26

And you can't turn it off.

There's a button you can press, doesn't work. Mines been in the off position for years and it still plays.

If I didn't get this app for free I probably wouldn't pay for it considering all of the other issues compounded on top of this.

You can totally turn it off.........

Good spot to put an ad. lol

6

u/LieutenantLeftovers Aug 29 '26

Prime literally shows you ads when paused 🤮🤮

2

u/jacquetpotato Aug 29 '26

This seems to happen with all streaming sites to an extent. My kid likes to watch the credits. Usually kids movie credits are fun, with little hidden scenes or songs they like. If you’re not quick, it always jumps to the next movie and you can’t get back to the credits unless you rechoose the movie and scroll all the way though to the end because the system thinks you’ve finished it so doesn’t hold your place!

2

u/littleLuxxy Aug 29 '26

I 100% agree with your consternation, but you should watch Masters of the Universe. Great film.

2

u/P_D_Stanley Aug 29 '26

After I finished The Boys, Prime automatically started me in the 2nd season of some spy show that had just come out. It began by recapping and spoiling the twists of the first season snd gave me no reason to start the series.

Is OP watching a TV show?..

If only the ads lasted 8 seconds. Does Prime even have ads?

2

u/Antiswag_corporation Aug 29 '26

Bluray doesn’t have this problem

2

u/xebt1000 Aug 29 '26

You can turn off autoplay in settings

2

u/TheThing1012513398 Aug 29 '26

And then its stuck in your keep watching.

2

u/BarristanTheB0ld Aug 29 '26

It's the same with Netflix, only even shorter. Maybe 2 or 3 seconds? So annoying

2

u/Metalgsean Aug 29 '26

Ugh, my remote is fucking up so I use my phone, but the app is shit so it always takes a few seconds to connect.

My 'continue watching' list is an absolute massacre.

2

u/shnaily Aug 29 '26

And then you spam back, land on the homepage and get blasted with the latest trailers auto playing anyway.

2

u/Coldblood_1 Aug 29 '26

I watched a movie on Prime last night - I Am Not A Serial Killer - and the play next suggestions popped up about 30 seconds before the end credits did, covering the bottom third of the screen/final shot. Go fuck yourself, Amazon.

2

u/Jill_Sandwich_ Aug 29 '26

Honestly OP, this is much than mildly infuriating to me. Just like how Prime will autoplay anything you land on after 2 seconds.

2

u/Wuz314159 (\/) (;,,;) (\/) Aug 29 '26

Correction... Plays another movie BEFORE you finish the first.

2

u/Korean_Pathfinder Aug 29 '26

You can turn autoplay off through the website.

2

u/Coq_la_braise Aug 29 '26

Imagine watching the end of the Sopranos and it immediately change to family guy or some shit

2

u/largececelia Aug 29 '26

It's very quick, and it's ALWAYS a movie I don't watch. Tech bros, keep talking about how AI is going to improve everything and save the world when you can't even figure out what kind of movies I like EVEN WHEN I DO THE THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN OVER AND OVER.

It's extremely user-unfriendly.

To the point where I just wonder if they hate people in general, if the entire project is infused with hate because it's so weirdly inconvenient and lacking in common sense.

They took away the area in the home page that lets you continue watching the shows you started already. (Oh did they hide it somewhere new, or take it away for 3 weeks and then return it? GTFOH)

Every time you search for something, like "kung fu movies" you get a bunch of random irrelevant garbage mixed in, ok not shocking, but you HAVE TO click on the filter thing at the top. With ONE FILTER. What? Why??? This allows you to filter out THE MOVIES YOU CANNOT WATCH AT ALL EVER. Why are those movies even included? Why are you showing me things I can't watch?

And then the ads. Of course, we all hate the ads from this greedy heartless slave driving corporation.

WHEN YOU MOVE YOUR CURSOR BETWEEN POSSIBLE SHOWS EACH ONE POPS UP TO GIVE A DESCRIPTION UNLESS YOU MOVE IT IN THE .1 MILLIMETER SPACE BETWEEN THE TILES. Even the process of scrolling through and looking at choices is incredibly painful and awkward, as I imagine it would be talking to Jeff Bezos for even a moment. Even this very very basic element of the interface is garbage, horrid, to the point that it seems cruel and hateful. Can't you brainless animals make a website?

The website still thinks I'm "traveling" and will display this every time I log in, even though I updated this and have been in the US for months.

For a huge multi billion dollar company to create a hell like this in website form is truly baffling, astonishing, even.

2

u/PmMeYourNiceBehind Aug 29 '26

You guys don’t watch movies back to back 8 seconds apart?

2

u/The_Bookkeeper1984 Aug 29 '26

Yes! Watched X-men 2 last night and wanted to rewatch the Mansion fighting sequence (it’s so awesome🙏😭)…

2

u/UptownJunk802 Aug 29 '26

For real. Like your show or movie won't even be over and a suggestion of what to watch next pops up and ruins it. Case in point, I was watching "The Whale" really emotional ending but wait know what you should watch next? Me Myself and Irene. Of course!

2

u/AnybodyNew433 Aug 29 '26

I fucking hate it too, always scrambling for the remote only to miss it by a second. There is no quick way to get back to the same point if you want to watch the credits or listen to the song playing.

u/NA_xyz Aug 30 '26

Pirated movies never had that. Just saying.

Also, better quality, cheaper, and doesn't explode if your internet connection dies.

u/sevinup07 Aug 29 '26

Physical media and self hosted media server

2

u/BowleeLacuna Aug 29 '26

You can turn auto-play off. It's just a setting. All the apps have that shit and I turn them all off and auto play previews too. They always catch me off guard and scare the shit out of me. They tend to default back to auto play when the app updates, which is also super frustrating.

I don't disagree that it's dumb but it's literally the most palatable and consumable form of entertainment while you're sitting on ass doing nothing.

The idea of optimizing it to be even more of a time waste doesn't seem like a worthy goal.

We should be happy that mindless entertainment hasn't taken us to full wall-e mode yet.

1

u/HeartyBeast Aug 29 '26

Have got auto play turned off?

2

u/mzglitter Aug 29 '26

Can you not just switch off autoplay?

1

u/Ayan_Choudhury Aug 29 '26

It's even faster in browser

1

u/SwampOfDownvotes Aug 29 '26

Moral because it was about to put on an amazing movie.

1

u/fusionmobile Aug 29 '26

It's like that everywhere, bruh

1

u/idontknowlazy Aug 29 '26

Did you like dune part 2 though

1

u/poggers11 Aug 29 '26

This sub is so weird, one post: there's 8 seconds of wait time before switching the Netflix movie. Next post: i have cancer and I'm dying

1

u/bwmat Aug 29 '26

Sometimes this got in the way of watching post credits scenes in shows and it was really damn annoying (and they're was no good way to stop it in Chromecast)

1

u/Old_Shake3789 Aug 29 '26

Most apps are like this now. You can't even just quickly open an app to quickly watch something, you've gotta scroll down then select continue watching these days. That's disregarding the coincidental slow af load times for said apps.

Once upon a time you'd open something like netflix and the first thing you'd see is what you've been watching then everything else. Under 20 seconds.
