Ls and high-vis requrements.

Hi, I am going to be getting my Ls soon. As I have a full drivers license, the process to getting off Ls should only be a few months. I have ridden motorbikes plenty before outside of Australia but don't have my license so have to go through the process.

My question is, if I were to not where my Ls and my high vis, how likely am I to be caught? I know if i had an accident or rode like an idiot I'd be screwed. But if I am riding otherwise safely, am I likely to be alright?

I know the prevailing answer is just suck it up and where them, but I am curious anyway.

Cheers.

Want to start riding here but scared

I came from Sydney. I find it to be a completely different ball game, safety wise. Which is a shame as there are some very cool roads and highways in Melbourne. Call it lame but the m2 tunnel does something to me spiritually.

Only problem is I am only thinking of getting a small bike (300 at most) which gives me some anxiety as I still find the roads not to be as dead as Sydney at night, and the people on the roads are tail gating constantly while I’m in my car, let alone a bike. I never had this experience in Sydney at night. It’s like a lot of people here have an anger problem if you’re in front of them?

The tram tracks also scare me. I’m scared to go down. From what I’ve read you have to go on them on an angle And not both Tyres at the same time. They are also a big problem when it’s raining or sprinkled. If I’m wrong please correct me.

Maybe some of you will get what I’m saying or maybe I’m overthinking it. I do find Melbourne to be way more dangerous on a bike. Any advice I‘d really appreciate!

Riding Day The Broken Roads, Broken Promises Rally is on tomorrow. By us showing up in numbers we can show the government we as riders have put up with the crappy state of our roads for way too long.

Bike jackings around Footscray

From 7 news

A gang of criminals in Melbourne has carried out three linked motorcycle jackings within hours. A 27-year-old woman was surrounded at traffic lights, punched and tasered, before her motorbike was stolen. Two other victims, aged 40 and 32, were also attacked on the same night, with one man hospitalised after being struck with a wrench.

Report here, with some graphic footage. Stay safe out there

Is it worth buying a helmet cam to report drivers on their phones in Victoria? Has anyone actually seen results?

I commute by bike daily and I see drivers on phones constantly, weaving in and out of traffic, etc. In general see a low standard of driving and pretty dangerous manoeuvres.

I'm thinking about buying a helmet cam and sending footage to Crime Stoppers Vic or VicPol, but I don't want to spend the money if its a waste of time.

If you've submitted footage of someone using their phone or being a total dickhead:

- Which route did you use (Crime Stoppers, Victoria Police online report, Police Assistance Line)?

- Did you get a reference number or any reply?

- Did the driver actually get fined or warned, or did you never hear anything?

- Does it need to be something overtly dangerous, or is any clear phone offence enough?

Also, if you use a cheap action cam for this, which one and were the plates readable?

Thank you

Spotted this today on the Frankston - Dandenong road, four massive potholes in a row all painted yellow as if that makes it better and a camera to make sure you hit them all. This a week after a guy gets killed on his bike after hitting a massive pothole. Ride safe and keep your eyes open guys. Victoria has lost the plot

MT09SP OR 10SP

I’m currently trying to decide between an MT09 SP and an MT10 SP. I ride roughly 50/50 between mountain roads and the highway, and currently ride an MT07. I understand that the MT10 is heavier, but I would really appreciate hearing how different the two bikes feel in real world riding. Would it be fair to say that the MT10 is essentially a heavier MT09 with more power, or are there other major differences that are not obvious from the specifications? For anyone who has ridden both, I would be grateful for your thoughts on how noticeable the extra weight is in the twisties, whether the additional power is useful on the highway, how they compare in terms of heat, fuel economy, comfort and running costs, and whether the SP suspension and electronics make a significant difference in everyday riding. I am also curious why MT09 SPs seem to be much more common than MT10 SPs. For a 50/50 mix of mountain roads and highway riding, which one would you personally choose and why? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Where should I look for bikes? (based on affordability)

I'm young and saving up to learn to ride and buy myself a bike. Unfortunately, as a first gen in my family and someone with no rider friends I've got squat for resources or direction. Did some research and wanted thoughts/opinions—gumtree, facebook marketplace, straight up dealer...Where should I go to find a good beginner bike that's affordable for a short uni student? Bonus for gear recs as well. My intention for wanting to learn to ride is more related to eventually being able to just cruise and tour around (I checked out tour bikes, cruiser, stuff) and maybe even build up toward going city to city.

My experience with Yamaha City Melbourne: sold me an unnecessary MT-07 cable for my R9, 2-month wait, then charged labour to fix it

TL;DR: Yamaha City knew I had an R9 but told me I needed an MT-07 heated grip connector. I questioned it and was reassured it was correct. I waited around two months for the unnecessary cable, spent time trying to figure out why it wouldn't work, then eventually found out the R9 never needed it in the first place. They credited the wrong cable back, but still charged me a full hour of labour to correct the wiring.

Just wanted to share my experience with Yamaha City Melbourne and see what other riders think, because I don't feel the way this was handled was particularly reasonable.

I contacted them specifically about buying genuine Yamaha heated grips for my R9. I clearly told the staff member what bike I had.

I was then told that I also needed an MT-07 heated grip connection lead.

I actually questioned this at the time because I could see that the part was specifically listed for the MT-07, while my bike is obviously an R9. I was reassured that they knew what they were doing and that this was the correct part I needed.

So I trusted the dealer, paid for it, and then waited around two months for the connector to arrive.

Once it finally arrived, I picked it up and installed the heated grips myself. The grips themselves installed fine, but after connecting everything using the MT-07 cable they had told me I needed, the heated grip controls would not appear on the R9 dash.

At this point I assumed there must be something I was missing, because this was supposedly the correct setup recommended by an authorised Yamaha dealer.

I spent more time checking the wiring and watching installation videos trying to understand how I was supposed to make this MT-07 cable work with the R9.

When I mentioned that I had been looking at YouTube videos to figure it out, one of the responses from the staff was basically that if I was relying on YouTube videos, they might not be reliable.

That was pretty frustrating, because the only reason I was searching for those videos in the first place was that their staff had told me this MT-07 cable was required, and I was trying to figure out how they expected me to use it.

Eventually I brought the bike back to Yamaha City so they could look at it.

That's when it became clear that the R9 did not need this MT-07 connection lead at all.

The genuine heated grips could already be installed on the R9 without this extra MT-07 cable. The wiring simply needed to be connected correctly under the tank.

What confused me even more was that the staff member later said that during our original phone conversation he apparently didn't know I owned an R9.

That doesn't match my experience at all.

I had specifically told them the bike was an R9, and I had even questioned why they were selling me an MT-07-specific cable for an R9 before I bought it. The only reason I went ahead with the purchase was because I was reassured that it was correct.

They then rewired the grips correctly under the tank.

The part that really disappointed me was that I was charged a full hour of labour for this.

I had already done essentially all of the actual heated grip installation myself. Their own original email to me also said that installing the entire heated grip setup normally takes around one hour(See figuer 1).

So somehow I installed the grips myself, but still ended up paying the same full hour of labour just for them to redo the wiring after the original parts advice turned out to be wrong.

Their solution regarding the MT-07 cable was to credit the amount I had already paid for it toward the final bill, and I paid the remaining difference.

They seemed to view this as resolving the issue, but I don't really see that as a particularly generous solution.

Crediting me for a part that I never needed and was only sold because of their incorrect recommendation is essentially just returning the value of the wrong part.

I still ended up carrying the cost of the full labour charge required to correct the problem.

So from my perspective, the outcome was:

- I clearly told them I had an R9.

- They told me I needed an MT-07-specific connector.

- I questioned whether it was compatible and was reassured it was correct.

- I paid for it.

- I waited around two months for it.

- I spent my own time trying to understand why their recommended setup wasn't working.

- I installed the heated grips myself.

- They eventually discovered the MT-07 connector was never required.

- The incorrect part was credited back.

- I still paid a full hour of labour for them to correct the wiring.

I completely understand that mistakes happen. If they had simply said, "We recommended the wrong part, that's on us, we'll sort out the wiring," I probably wouldn't even be writing this post.

What bothers me is that the mistake originated from the dealership's advice, I specifically questioned that advice before purchasing, and I still ended up absorbing the waiting time, troubleshooting and labour cost needed to correct it.

The heated grips are working now, but the whole process took around two extra months and was far more confusing and expensive than it needed to be.

Curious whether other riders think charging the full labour hour in this situation was reasonable, or whether the dealer should have covered the correction given that the unnecessary cable was recommended by them in the first place.

Riding Day Question regarding my drive test at Heatherton VIC

Hi so I’ve my driving test on Thursday at Heatherton VIC and I’m planning on giving it in my Honda jazz which has a driver focused speedometer which isn’t easily visible from the passenger’s side so I wanted to know if i can still give the test init or will I have to book a driving school’s car.

Apart from this my car is road worthy and complies with all the other rules. I’m particularly worried about this one because this is my 2nd attempt and I desperately need my license for work stuffs

Also, someone who’s given the test at this location before do you mind sharing some tips on how I can pass this test or certain things I need to keep in mind before my test?
