Real estate/Renting Neighbor asked me to moved partners truck because we’re only renters
Earlier today, I saw our neighbor gossiping with our other neighbor and whilst I was buckling our 5 month old baby in the car seat I looked at her and gave me a bad look and thats when she approach and said “ Excuse me, sorry to bother you, but could you ask your husband—that’s your husband right—not to park the truck on the street?" I responded politely and said, "Sure, I’ll let him know."
However, she continued by saying that it’s starting to bother the neighbors and added, “We’re owners and you’re renting,” I told her what it got to do with us renting and that she was being discriminatory.
I told her, “If you have an issue with the parking, take it up with the council—as long as we’re not blocking anyone’s driveway, I understand the truck is a bit big and walked out on her, she then went back to the other neighbor to continue gossiping.
I felt targeted and discriminated.
To the neighbor if you are reading this you are a wanker. Get a life.
Update: Saw the same neighbor today took the bin out in the street guess to protect her street so no one can park there and our bin day is Wednesday 🤷♀️Karen is looking for some fight.

Video Melbourne Star Moving in Docklands
At first I thought I was tripping but if you look closely it was moving very slowly. I have never seen it move in my three years living here!
They must be testing in preparation for it to open.

THDG Need Help What's a niche survival hack you've learned living in Melbourne to give to someone who will be moving there?
I've only been the Melbourne when I was really young, any good advice on someone who will be living there in a few months?

Opinions/advice needed Just moved to Melbourne from the US - how can I be as non-annoying as possible?
I’m from Washington DC and could always clock a transplant from a mile away. As an expat now living in Collingwood, do you have any advice for how I can fit in better? I want to be as nonobstrusive and has ingratiating as possible

Opinions/advice needed Recently moved here - what's the deal with your ticket inspectors?
I'm from Adelaide, and we certainly have them but they're a lot more forgiving than the ones I see on trams here. Why are they dressed like they're the FBI? What's with the badges? Are they fining people for first offenses - even if those offenses are genuine mistakes or they're in bad financial straits but need to get somewhere?
Put this under advice needed as I don't know where else to put it

Real estate/Renting How often is normal to move while renting?
I have to move again as the landlord is selling and once again watching this happen it's literally been my experience that every house I rented has been sold. I've been renting for the last 12 years since finishing highschool and it has been an endless fucking nightmare.
I've had no stability for the entirity of my adult life because of this, I share with my mother because she can't afford a place on her own with a pension. I hate that situation too, she's not my ideal roommate at all lol.
This last year has been worse then anything I've seen though and I'm honestly terrified for the future. I can barely hold my own life together at this point and I have shitloads saved up and a decent income. And yet it's harder for me to get a place now then it was when I was literally broke leaving fucking highschool. On average I've moved at least once every 2 - 3 years since I started renting and I consider myself lucky. The first few houses I was in both got put on the market as soon as the 12 month lease ended. How the fuck is anyone supposed to have any stability or sense of community like this? It's ruined my social life having to uproot constantly. I'm worried now I won't be able to get a place close to where I currently work and time is running short. This situation is fucked.
Edit: It's not moving possessions that annoy me, and I do try to keep my stuff from building up too much so it makes the process easier. but I still hate having to fucking move constantly and spend all this extra time and money, nevermind that renting in general is massive fucking rip off. Every house I've rented has been an overpriced POS and getting shit repaired virtually impossible.

THDG Need Help Any Sydney-siders move to Melbourne, how are you finding it?
Dreading the idea of paying over $1 million for a mortgage for the rest of my working life. Thinking of moving over to Melbourne. I've been a couple of times and I love the city way more, so vibrant and lively compared to Sydney.
Has anyone else from Sydney moved? How long has it been? What do you miss? What don't you miss?

Light and Fluffy News To the guy who helped us move a washing machine down the street. Thank you so much. You have no idea what that meant to us.
We're broke, struggling graduates who haven't been able to find jobs a year after graduating. Our washing machine broke and we desperately needed one, but in our stupidity didn't realise it would be 70 goddamn kilos. Thank you for finding us, going all the way back home to get your trolley, and then walking us back to our place with the machine. You are an absolute legend. I love this city and its people.

The Sky is Falling Anyone seeing this right now? Two lights on the sky. Not moving.
Just noticed two bright lights on the night sky. Never saw them before. Definitely not plane or helicopter as they're not moving.

Opinions/advice needed Potentially moving to Melbourne area - some concerns/questions
My wife (an RN), our two daughters (11 and 7), and I (a cybersecurity analyst) are considering a move to Melbourne from the USA. An acquaintance from university lives in Melbourne and steered us there after we originally considered Adelaide.
We are coming from a great “village” and a close-knit group of friends. I’ve heard in a few places that many Australians don’t move around as much, which can mean people often have tight friend groups formed during their school years.
I’m fairly extroverted—perhaps less so than when I was younger—but my wife is more introverted. I’m more concerned about her than myself, particularly around her mental health and how quickly she might be able to form friendships. She does make friends, but it tends to take her a bit longer than average. At the same time, I wonder whether we might struggle in general to build a new “village” on the other side of the globe.
So my question is: is this a valid concern? I’ve also read that Melbourne has a huge number of interest-based groups and is considered the cultural capital of the country, which gives me hope that there may be multiple pathways to forming new friendships. I’m also curious whether there are ways to start reaching out now—virtually—and begin building connections ahead of a potential move.
I’d really appreciate any thoughts or advice. Thank you!

THDG Need Help Rainy day, parked car, rear-ended — what’s the next move?
Because apparently parking your car legally and completely off the road in front of your house isn’t enough to avoid drama these days…
While I was inside enjoying the rain (and not crashing into anything), someone unfortunately lost control and rear-ended my parked car. Pretty decent impact — police showed up, paramedics attended the driver (hope they're okay), so I didn’t get a chance to get their details myself.
I took a bunch of photos. But since this is my first time dealing with a hit-while-parked situation, I’ve got a few questions:
Do I need to follow up with the police or will my insurer handle that?
Is it normal to not have the other party’s details yet? Will the police report cover that?
Anything else I should be doing that people usually forget when this happens?
And how long do these things actually take to resolve?
I know my car didn’t do anything wrong — it was just parked, minding its own business — but now I’m in paperwork land.
Any advice or tips welcome. Bonus points for telling me it’ll all be over soon and my car will magically fix itself. Thanks in advance!

Politics Yarra City Council’s Victoria St ‘Revitalisation Plan’ lands - “move the MSIR”.
So the final plan has been released, and one of the aims is to advocate to move the MSIR.
No real suggestion as to what to do with the tens of users who will end up back in our streets, dying in our laneways. Just seemingly some short sighted notion that closing the MSIR will somehow magically resolve those who are IV substance dependant.
And for the record, yes the school being so close is an issue, but the drug issues by the school predate the MSIR by decades. In all honesty, the school needs to move.

THDG Need Help Moving out - need to understand the finances
Hello everybody!
I am 18 years old, currently in university as well.
I want to move out and I’m not quite sure how much anything will cost since obviously i’ve never lived alone.
I’ve seen a few youtube videos showing you can really get food down to $30 a week, and so with my current budgeting I was thinking I could do the following :
$400 a week rent, bills included ($1600 a month)
$50 a week food ($200 a month)
$30 a week Gas ($120 a month)
Miscellaneous, going out, random payments etc $100 a week, ($400 a month)
That is $2,320 a month.
Is that actually feasible or is that unrealistic budgeting?
P.s. Once I move out, I really can’t move back in, that’s not how it works with my family 😊

Serious Please Comment Nicely Thanks to everyone who moved out of the way of our ambulance this morning.
This morning when I went to wake my 3yr old she was having a seizure. This is not her first one. Just the first one we have done on a week day at peak hour. We had to navigate the Monash and Wellington rd in peak hour traffic. It only took us 20min when it takes 40min in peak hour usually. because everyone moved out of the way. At the on and off ramp people moved to the side and in some cases onto the grass to let us through. I know most of you will never see this. But if you were one of the people that moved over thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know by law you’re supposed to but I also know how hard that is to do in peak hour when there is sometimes nowhere to move. And everyone moved immediately.
My toddler is very sick and we’re being transferred to RCH so she can be put on a heart bypass machine. If anyone is wondering. No one is really telling us what the prognosis is just that she’s very sick.
EDIT: thank you everyone for your concern and well wishes. My daughter has sepsis and is in a delicate position but we are well supported at RCH. They expect her to get better but not sure how quickly that will be or how much damage has been done to her brain from the seizures. So it will be a long and unknown journey.
Edit 2: for anyone still following along. My daughter is stable, no seizures for the past 3 hours. But they will keep her sedated for at least the next 2-3 days to give her body a chance to rest and recover. Thanks again to everyone for your concerns and well wishes.
30 April 2023 We had to make the decision to turn off life support for our little girl. Her seizure went on too long and her brain was starved of oxygen.
Thank you everyone for your kind words and offers of support. They meant a lot to my husband and I.

Real estate/Renting Any reason not to move to Melbourne from Perth?
So I'm currently 19 and live in Perth and recently visited Melbourne on holiday and it seems like the perfect place for me.
The alternative culture + music scene, friendly people, job opportunities in my field and of course apartment prices. I couldn't care less for the beach or Perth's "relaxed" lifestyle that honestly isn't even a thing everyone just goes to bed at 7.
Timeline would be 5-10 years when I have enough for a house deposit (currently working full time) is there any reason for me not to move to Melbourne?

Not On My Smashed Avo What’s the deal with uber drivers at the airport not moving from the parking lot?
Is this a new modus by uber drivers? I have tried and connected to at least 5 uber drivers and they all accept the ride but they just stay at the parking lot at the airport, not approaching the uber pick up zone and not responding to messages. I wait 5 to 10 minutes each time then I cancel because they still haven’t moved. Then I find a new driver and they just pick up again (some repeat drivers), then they still don’t drive towards you or respond. They all have high ratings too! Was frustrating as I just wanted my family to get home and it was pretty late.

Real estate/Renting Considering moving to Melbourne from Berlin
Hello everyone!
I’m looking for some perspective from people who have experienced both Berlin and Melbourne. My partner (a Kiwi) and I are considering a move to Melbourne to be closer to his family and culture, but I have some hesitations as a long-time European resident.
The Context
• Current Location: Berlin
• The Goal: We want a calmer, cleaner, more family-oriented environment.
Why we’re leaning towards Melbourne:
• Language: Honestly? Ready to never speak German again!
• Nature: I’m a certified diver and crave proximity to the ocean/nature.
• Home Ownership: It feels impossible in Berlin; we’re hoping for better long-term prospects in Aus.
My Main Concerns (The "Berlin Safety Net" vs. Australia):
1. Job Security & Rights: In Germany, after 6 months on an unlimited contract, you are very protected. I’m used to 25–30 days of vacation and 6 weeks of paid sick leave. How does the Australian "Fair Work" system compare? Is it as "unstable" as it feels from afar?
2. The Social Leap (Neurodiversity): I am Autistic (Level 1). It took me a long time to find "my people" in Berlin’s unique social scene. Is Melbourne welcoming to neurodivergent folks? Is the "friendship culture" easy to break into?
3. The Blind Move: Due to flight prices, there’s a chance we’d move without a scouting trip. Is Melbourne a "safe bet" for someone who has only ever lived in Europe (Spain & Germany)?
I’d love to hear from anyone who has made this specific jump. How does the "vibe" compare? Do you miss the European social safety net, or is the quality of life in Victoria worth the trade-off?
Thanks in advance!
