The video itself was quite informative on science and food science concepts, but this part amused me as a local.

Om nom nom Shout out to Burnley KFC team tonight!

Did an uber eats order from Burnley KFC, and got a cute little note apologising for not being able to give me sparkling water with my order! They gave me a few extra nugs for the inconvenience.

Don’t want to put up an ‘official’ positive review just in case they might get in trouble for the extra nuggets they gave, but hopefully either a member of the crew or a friend is on here.

Om nom nom Can we talk about how good 7-11 is getting after the Japan 711 buyout?

1.6k Upvotes

Always loved the combinis in Japan and with the ownership change a couple of years ago I have been low-key tracking the changes over the past year or so. Went to one yesterday for a coffee yesterday and they have onigiri, egg rolls, looks like they were installing a spot for fried food and pizza. Started to give me big japan vibes.

They are not there yet though, I bought one of their bentos and it was pretty terrible, so I reckon the Australian food suppliers need some work but I'm seeing the framework to have actually good convenience stores come together now.

Visiting Springvale today and picked this bad boy up.

Never seen one this large before.

670grams so 3 times larger than the regular jars.

Around $8 from KFL supermarket.

Om nom nom What closed Melbourne restaurant do you still think about?

Mine is Mugen — this tiny basement tsukemen bar tucked under Bligh Place in the CBD. Run by one chef, maybe 8 seats. The broth was absurdly rich and they did this thing where the noodles came on a bamboo mat separate from the soup.

They closed during COVID and never came back. I've tried basically every ramen/tsukemen spot in Melbourne since and nothing has quite matched it.

Keen to hear yours — especially the ones that weren't famous but just had that one dish you can't stop thinking about.

Om nom nom Absolutely diabolical spite store situation in Melton

Post image

I travel a fair bit for work and was craving a pie.

Buddy’s bakery was the one that popped up closest on maps, but to my surprise there is actually another bakery directly next to Buddy’s.

Any Meltonians in here that can shed a bit of light on who was there first and who is the spiteful curmudgeon trying to bring the other one down?

Om nom nom Greensy Plaza: Melbourne’s most depressing food court?

So many of the shops in the food court are long-term vacant (50% by my count) so they’ve made these disguises to make it look less bleak, like maybe it’s a real food outlet. I’m not sure it helps.

This was the shopping centre of my youth. I had dates in this food court, and none of them were as grim as it’s looking these days.

Om nom nom Let's talk crispy chilli oil

Post image

Crispy Chilli oil seems to have become the official condiment of Melbourne with chilli scramble seemingly a must on every cafe menu (the new avo toast, perhaps), so what's your fave?

One of these Melbourne made products or the old school Laoganma?

I'm a sucker for the Chotto Motto on the right, but have these others to try (the one of the left is Chotto Motto infused with whisky).

Oh and hot tip, use a little bit of Crispy chilli oil to fry your eggs (rather than standard oil). It's crazy good and I'm shocked cafes haven't picked up on it.

What's your go to for crispy chilli oil, or have you moved on to another condiment du jour?

Om nom nom HOT JAM DONUTS REVIEW

Post image
730 Upvotes

So a few months ago i posted on here asking for info on hot jam donuts in Melbourne for my own personal review

well i have now gone to all but 1 location not thru lack of trying but everytime i have gone to barkley hot jam donuts in the last month the van hasn’t been there but every other location i have tried so i figured i would share my thoughts

so i gave myself 3 main things for my review

  1. The crunch of the outside (i like them with crips out the fryer)
  2. The texture of the inside (i like a almost cake like texture on the inside
  3. the temperature of the jam ( i like them at the very least warm)

a few of the locations i came across offered extra jam for 50c to $1 a donut so i came up with the rule no paying for extra jam because i was reviewing them solely on how there sold on there own and let me tell you there were a couple that the only reason they didn’t get a perfect 10 was because the needle a little more jam

all the locations had six donuts to win me over for there final score now I’m sure lots of people will disappointed with wear there favourite donuts sit on the scoreboard and to that i say your more then welcome to go on the delicious journey to try and prove me wrong
