Culture You know the fried rice isn't selling well when you start endorsing an online gambling website.

u/Fendibull 16h ago
Looks like he's struggling to keep his business afloat over those expensive nasi goreng debacles and such. I mean, John DeLorean had to use a "Certain" method to keep his automobile company alive.
184
u/jefe_hook 16h ago
Seriously what was he thinking selling nasi goreng in Malaysia. This is something that you can get in every restaurant.
40
u/False_Brick1521 7h ago
...do Malaysians even care about him anyway? All of his humour is very geared towards Asian immigrant communities in the west, what is there for locals to relate to?

u/RaphaelSlader 16h ago
Went there twice at Pavilion. Both friends came over KL and wanted to try. It's like cooking fried rice in slow fire, too much oil, very salty and spicy. no taste balance at all. For that price, warung tepi jalan lagi sedap and murah. It's just hype, food isn't good at all.
28
•
u/Similar_Cream_7623 4h ago
He is trying to match price to Din Tai Fung, but he don't even own any good recipe.
You don't make good food because you jokes on fried rice and collab with some cooks.23
u/Nawzays_ 14h ago
Went there for the first time last night at Pavilion. Mine wasn't as oily or salty like people were saying... but the special fried one is at most mediocre, still not beating the local food stalls. But the chili oil is peak tho, really made up the whole dish tbh.

u/WajajaKEKW 12h ago edited 11h ago
Any other menus worth trying at least? All comments mention his fried rice but others?
And the downvote is for?

Well, i tried the noodles, I remember they sucked too. If your signature dish sucks, you're not going to find hidden gems in the side menus.

u/MszingPerson 16h ago
I doubt it's his business. Just like most artist, they are just sell their brand name, and take fees

Doubt the restaurant personally owned. Probably owned by big corpo

He should go back to YouTube and his live comedy show.
Entrepreneurship has its price, and he pay for that.4
u/orz-_-orz 11h ago
I always thought he "rent"" his name to the restaurant, he didn't own the restaurant.

Been to his pavilion one. Mid at best. Had his fried rice. Honestly I can make something better lol

u/ab_90 16h ago
He has always been a one-trick pony. His character’s accent is more of a Hong Kong than a Malaysian
28
u/Kaxology average OKBR enjoyer 10h ago
It would be fine if he spoke remotely close to whatever his character accent had but he doesn't actually speak like that at all, he sold his race to clown dance for white people and somehow people were fine with it
47
u/uncertainheadache 15h ago
It's a Cantonese accent. KL was a very Cantonese city. HK doesn't have a monopoly on Cantonese
45
u/tlst9999 Selangor 12h ago
I speak Cantonese my whole life. That's not Malaysian Cantonese accent. That's Hong Kong.

Honestly I don't find him funny at all. He's irritating, not even interesting, just pretending to be boomer Asian uncle cringe archetype.
23
u/PuzzleheadedFlow1274 15h ago
Yeah exactly, so much untapped potential in comedic Asian culture and this mf acting like Pokemon saying it’s own name a billion times. Could’ve been a proper chef, a proper comedian, but no, just random online celeb that got forgotten after a few months.
7
u/GuaSukaStarfruit Sun Go Kong 🐒 in Quebec City 13h ago

Yeah, credit to him for being able to build a brand and milk out of it as much.
Tried his fried rice one for the hype, nothing special. Not worth it for my tastebuds.

That’s pretty much the joke. Haha so Asian. His initial following was mostly Asians who have settled in the West. I enjoyed some of his initial videos shitting on white people making fried rice but after that he kind of fell off the map for me.

If you watching him for the sarcastic jokes, Uncle roger persona, as entertainment, that is fine.
If you support anything else, you are 100% cooked, overprice, not really money worth vs what you can get from other restaurant.
He just being one of the typical people becoming famous, gotta milk the shit out of the fans. Logan Paul and that black dude is even bigger example, Prime is literally toxin to kids and even adult.•

IDK anything about owning a business, but I feel like if anyone starts a business in Msia, there will always be shady people who will target the business owner for some free money, like these gambling site people in the video or like the tuition center issue.
Surely most of the rich people here got some shady connections either to succeed or survive, better just bring your money out of the country.

Not true. If the food is genuinely good, people will come. There's tons of good food stalls that sell one or two things only and they have good business.

To be fair gambling (especially casinos) is quite normalised in Chinese culture. It’s definitely on brand for a Chinese uncle.
Although this isn’t great for anyone younger than 18 or people with gambling addictions.
