What Games Can I Run? i5 5200u, iGPU, 8gbs of ram, 256gbs of SSD, Lubuntu Linux

hello everyone. i bought this laptop (specs in the title) for a really cheap price, since I won't be in town for a few months and I don't think me bringing my desktop would work lol.

If it's the Acer TravelMate P446-M, then that thing is a real beauty and the catalyst for me actually dedicating myself to understanding Linux.

Like aside from the down right horrible screen but it looks replaceable with much better IPS alternatives for it's sizes and cable type. But I mostly use it now hooked to a dumb TV anyway.

I'm on CachyOS for all the theoretical performance I could get. Same i5-5200u, same HD 5500, but 4GB soldered + 8GB discrete to 12GB total RAM, 500GB Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD.

Surprisingly a lot of 2D titles can be played very comfortably at 60fps and more at 540p scaled Fullscreen on some 40" 1080p dumb TV and a decent remote keyboard that's comfortable to hold like the rii i4.

It's been a real joy.

GTAV legacy, MGSV, Dragon Age Inquisition, LoL, Valorant, Monster Hunter World Iceborne with tweaks, Deep Rock Galactic, Flyff Universe, Warframe, Tomb Raider 2013, Metro 2033 redux and Last Light (haven't tried Exodus), WoW Classic, Guild Wars 2, The Last Spell, Rogue Waters, both Pathfinder games, Disco Elysium, Knight in tight spaces, Chroma Squad

I've tried them in win10, tho, but they should run playable at 720p

With the current state of Wine and Linux Gaming, there's no need to change to windows like it would have been a decade ago, times have changed 🤷

Prime os is android os not windows. Moreover linux still struggles to run games with anti cheat.

The world of gaming is much greater than anti-cheat games...

Stardew Valley Terraria Minecraft Fallout Elder Scrolls Final Fantasy Dragon Quest Shovel Knight Hollow Knight Celeste Balatro Most Star Wars Games Lego Games Emulation of old Systems Many, many more

If you really, really want to play anti-cheat games, then sure, get Windows 11, otherwise, Linux is fine, no need to swap to Windows and ruin your general Desktop experience just for one or two games...

Also, Linux Ports and Proton for the most part is better than android ports, I'd rather play Rome Total War or Medieval Total War 2 on Linux than android 🤣🤣🤣

Not just anti cheat games. Other games often too give errors here and there. Running the app native is always better than an emulator layer. Same goes for Android like prime os. There is no emulation going on so it gives the highest possible performance in games. There are also Chrome book scraped os like Fyde os. Which gives you native android + a linux terminal and also linux app support.

Wine isn't emulation...

Yes, not all games run well, but the vast majority of games do. Anyway, again, I wouldn't recommend android for a desktop environment...

Look up Prime os. They sell their own primebooks. It's made well to be a desktop environment. But latest versions aren't available for download only limited to primebooks. While fyde os is almost the same as chrome os you get in chrome books. As an desktop environment fyde os is better but for gaming prime is more optimised and has a very good inbuilt key mapper.

I'll give my personal opinion. Currently for me I do not think so it makes a lot of sense to use linux. Most modern budget machine/laptops can easily run windows but struggle with games, performance improvements while switching to Linux on such a machine is mostly negligible. Only place linux makes sense is actual old hardware where windows struggle to run.

Your OS will be the issue 🙃

You can install Steam on Linux though.

Yeah but that will still gate keep u from most of the games.

Not really, the compatibility layer is amazing. I can even run a lot of other windows apps through it

That's great. But afaik games are only focused on windows though recently its changing... Stil it needs more time 🙃

Anyway if he can play the games he like then i dont have any problems with that

Being focused on Linux doesn't mean they don't run

3

u/Caldraddigon 2d ago

It won't gate keep you anymore than the specs would on most of the posts in this thread, if anything for some games, it might slightly improve things...

A huge number of games today are playable with wine/proton and the few games that aren't are basically down to the devs deciding not to support Linux. Sometimes there are some issues which require tinkering but it really isn't nearly as much h of a problem as Kernel level anticheats are pretty much the only thing that never works. For low end gaming the biggest problem is usually vulkan support for the GPU, if there is bad vulkan support or even none you cant play that many games as dxvk translates directx to vulkan.

We are talking about OP's laptop specs, which I'm pretty sure can't run any TODAYS GAMES. But anyway, thanks for the info.

1

u/Grapefruitenenjoyer 2d ago

Yeah, my point was just that Linux isn't the problem.

Strange usage of "most" there. 90% of games on Steam will run on Linux. OP's specs are more of a barrier than the minority of games which use KLAC.

u/Muted_Stand_9623 1d ago

I'm not sure about Steam holding all of the games around the world. And even if it does, we don't know whether the game OP wants to play will run. But anyway, he wants to play games on this device, and this 90% game unfortunately won't run. So he might switch to the classic games. And this is where my answer will fit.

A game not being on Steam doesn't preclude it from being able to run on Linux. I just pointed out the amount of Steam games that will run on Linux to show the current state of Linux gaming. Linux is actually better than modern Windows for running games made for older versions of Windows.

Well, modern windows are becoming winslop.

I recommend you to just stick with windows or if windows are still heavy use a open source debloat comfiguration like atlas os,gaming on linux are using translation layer like wine and proton and that thing kinda make the games more heavy compared to run natively in Windows
