Not familiar w/that (obviously not stainless) steel, but then Spy-co has so many different steels that they use; great patina & such an ideal EDC knife … glad you’ve found “The One”.
This was an exclusive that came out around the end of 2017 or early 2018. It didn't sell very fast as far as exclusives go. 52100 steel and peel-ply carbon fiber scales. There was the Para 3 and PM2. There was also a Manix in 52100 with a coated blade but I don't think it was the same exclusive.
52100 is a ball bearing, low alloy carbon steel. It's super tough, not great with edge retention but it easily takes an amazing edge
Killer edge retention, not so great toughness! I have one of these too, I bought it right before I got the 52100 but it's still put away. I ended up getting a Native 5 in Maxamet from the online seconds sale a couple years ago and I use that one quite a bit.
The native 5 is pretty amazing for a smaller Spydie. It’s expensive, but the S90V native 5 with the fluted Carbon Fiber scales is my personal favorite!

I been carrying the native 5 for the last few months, got this manix pretty cheap to try out and i think itll end up being my most carried knife now lol
The manix is one of those knives that just does everything well for me. It's overbuilt enough where I would feel pretty confident putting it through some hard use- but is still relatively compact and fidgety. It feels like the happy medium between something like a cold steel recon 1 (tank) and a lighter use edc knife. As a lefty, I've had to get used to using a standard compression lock pm2- because spyderco has no intention of ever producing the lefty variant with a dlc coating (I've asked) or with any other steel- but the ball cage lock is just perfectly ambidextrious.
My only wish is that they skeletonized the linders and gave us, at minimum, an aluminum ball cage. Both my crucarta and g10 version have a flytanium al ball cage and mxg deep carry clips- eventually I'll build one with AWT scales.
Decided to pick up a big brother to my OG belair. Carrying both today to get a more direct comparison (been carrying the original in my rotation for well over a year, love the thing)
Thankyou man. Love the XL- like instantly loved this thing. I always felt like the Belair would've been better just being a touch larger- and the XL is exactly that. Fills my hand out a bit better, has my prefered blade length- and is still relatively light while still feeling substantial (no Bugout effect here). Time will tell how Kershaw's PVD holds up- it seems like it already took a scuff in light use- but as a design- it's fantastic.
I’m not a big OTF fan (mostly because my lovely state has outlawed all automatic knives, so I tend to just pay no attention) … that said — I want one! That colorway makes a sexy knife even WAY MORE SO!
Thanks! It is a knice and quite a slicey little utility knife that works like a wonder in everyday tasks. The edge is hardened to 62 hrc so it keeps its sliceyness very well and I haven’t had any issues with the lack of corrosion resistance as someone might point out of the steel. I do have have the N690 version too but it rarely sees any real action.
Indeed, I carry 3 most every day; I use a mixture of the 2 front pockets, the “coin”/5th pocket & the left rear.
Today, the Chaves is in the L back/rear pocket, the ABW is in the R front & the MBK is in the coin/5th.

I just looked them up, and the non DLC, milled gray Ti one is my jam; although not cheap, it does fall w/in my personal choice for a set price limit ($300-ish) & there’s a Kelpie drop on their site in a few days (8th) … so I’m gonna make an attempt to raise the funds for it in the small window of time I have — wish me luck!

Such a great all purpose knife!! (Just my humble opinion here) but between the Sage, the Para 3 & the Native, I feel like Spyderco has locked down the EDC market more than any other maker that I can think of.

I had their Street tanto, but I let it go — for the life of me, I can’t recall why, but I sure wish I hadn’t — What a perfect little tank of a smaller knife!! What the heck was I thinking!! 🤦🏽♂️

I always carried a Gerber Multiplier with me in the Service; it came in particularly handy over in the Gulf War … not sure what became of that thing, but I do miss it.
Always thought the ST Leicht was a great design, but I’ve never tried it — how do you like it?
I love it! Honestly, I think it’s the best smaller knife I’ve encountered so far … it could use just a bit more grippiness, so I may have it laser etched (or some thing else like that) to improve the grip — but I’m undecided because I love the look & feel, and it’s not like it’s hard to maintain grip, it just feels like it could use a little bit more I guess.
Ok, i enjoy knives so i have many, i traded 11 knives for this. Also, i know it's part of a hype train but i got it this weekend, i feel like its worth the hype, so of couse i will be carrying it for a while.
For sure!! I did not realize just how small it is until I had it in hand … but the size has actually really grown on me, because I can carry this fantastic little knife just about anywhere!
