Same, I wish they had a function to email us when it comes back in stock.
As popular as they seem to be they should raise their prices, I would pay more for these, theyāre beautiful!!

I donāt think this is related to the village. Reading their mission statement, it is a South Carolina based group for the black community in Aiken County.
11
u/Good-Bodybuilder-985 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's possible the village ships giant orders to this distributor so the prices and shipping remain affordable instead of them shipping individually from the continent of Africa.
-edit Oh yeah, when you go to the website itself it talk about distribution throughout the world!
26
u/LeviOsa_not_LeviOSAR 1d ago
The umojajewelry website is correct, but the umojavillage website does not refer to the umoja village, it refers to helping community in Aiken, South Carolina

I can't find any info on how much of the money goes to the women, does anyone know? The website says they buy it wholesale from the village, then sell it to us. I'm really curious about the cost breakdown.
12
u/Pruritus_Ani_ 1d ago
It says on the website about us page that 100% of the money goes to the women, which is great
9
u/MamaEarth21 1d ago
Amazing but why use white women to model the jewellery? Itās stunning and beautiful on these gorgeous black Queens! They should be the models!
18
u/Cosmolina111 1d ago
My guess is, that's their target market: European and American tourists with European and American money to spend. Show the white women how good the jewellery looks on them, and they'll buy it.

Im already doing this. Im 10 yrs single with my daighter and our female kitty. My home is the safe space for all my daughters female friends, I have 1 here regularly as shes been disowned by her family for not conforming to their strict religious beliefs.
Its been empowering having such bright young women, coming here, and making a home im my home for themselves, sharing ideas and being passionate about the world they live in.
37
u/ZealousidealSkirt327 1d ago
That sounds wonderful. And honestly, itās a compliment to you skills as a mother. To provide a safe space that your grown up children happily return to is awesome!!
28
u/InevitableFox81194 1d ago
Thank you. I worked so hard to create this space, so that even when my daughter is at uni with her friends, they all still send me messages, letting me know what they are all up to and when they plan to visit. 1 daughter, 3 female friends, all from differenr walks of life, making my home their safe space.
Something sadly, my mother never achieved for me.
15
u/ZealousidealSkirt327 1d ago
My home was not a safe space neither. Unfortunately I donāt have children, but the home I created with my partner is my safe space now. And I love it so much. No shouting, no putting someone down, no physical altercations. Just peace and quiet.
8
u/InevitableFox81194 1d ago
Im so sorry you had to deal with that, its never easy as a child to realise your own home is not a safe space. But im so proud of you for finding someone and creating that safe soace for yourself. I dont recommend bringing children into this modern day world, but im glad at least that for the one child I have I raised a strong, independent, young woman who has found her people.
Have a lovely weekend, you truly deserve it ā¤ļø

My old coworker and I joked about having a commune by the sea. Living in tiny houses high on the bluffs, growing our food, hunting/fishing, growing weed and selling it to dispensaries, and growing hops (related to cannabis!) for brewing some kick ass IPAs.
Our only stipulation was no dudes. We had women for each ājobā who had some measure of expertise who we knew and were into the commune idea. It is supposed to be our retirement plan but maybe we will move up our timeline and allow partners. But only if theyāre cool and understand they are entering a little egalitarian society that can easily become a matriarchy if they start being dicks.

Those ARE traditional beds! That's literally their tradition.Ā
280
u/SlightAnything4909 1d ago
Based on their clothing, these women likely belong to the Massai, a herding tribe living in Tanzania and Kenya. The colorful cloaks and large bead disc necklaces are their traditional clothes. In many regions, it's still common for Massai men to have multiple wives. FGM is also still widespread though some groups have disavowed it.
199
6
u/heldaway 1d ago
Whatās FGM?
55
u/SlightAnything4909 1d ago
Female Genital Mutilation. It's done in a few cultures in Africa, Asia and the Middle East as kind of an "initiation ritual" for young girls. The clitoris, clitoral hood, and/or labia minora are partially cut or completely removed, sometimes the remaining wounds are sewn shut. It's very dangerous, incredibly painful and often leads to decreased sexual function and complications with sexual intercourse and birth later in life.
31
u/heldaway 1d ago
Thank you. This makes me burn with rage!
19
u/SlightAnything4909 1d ago
It's so freaking messed up! Luckily more and more groups are abandoning the practice but it takes a lot of courage for many women because un"circumcised" women are often considered "unclean".
16
u/PossiblePotato4153 1d ago
And it's perpetuated by the older women, not just what a man wants.
21
u/DaisyHotCakes 1d ago
Sometimes tradition leads to regressive behavior. Education is the best way to counter it. That plus enforcement of banning horrific traditions such as this and circumcision. There is zero medical reason to mutilate babies/childrens genitals.
22
u/PailingRaint 1d ago
I remember being taught to keep period talk hush hush and to hide pads/tampon packages where guests can't see them. By my own mother. About something damn near half the human population experiences at some point in their life. It's not just the internalized misogyny in far off foreign cultures that impact us, this shit happens everywhere.
9
u/DaisyHotCakes 1d ago
It is really insane when you think about it for a second. Literally half the population bleeds every single month from puberty to menopause. Why are we allowing people to make us feel badly about this??? Why is a bodily process that legit no one else knows is happening to you somehow something to feel shame for? It is insane.
2
10
u/SlightAnything4909 1d ago
Yep, there's often a lot of secrecy around it in fact. It's seen as a "women's issue" which makes it even more taboo to talk about.

Is this Umoja?
This is my favourite answer to "women need men for protection", because they had to hire a few men to protect the village... from other men.
(Thatās what I read on their wikipedia page)
Itās always a relief to see the village still stands.
81
u/xhivo 1d ago edited 1d ago
EDIT: Strikethrough and prefacing with: I misunderstood what WhiskeyAndKisses was saying.
The Wikipedia article says nothing about that. It does say that men tried to build a nearby village, open a competing business, and lrevent tourists from going. But the Umoja Uaso ended up buying the surrounding land.
Also, even if they did? What was your point?119
u/WhiskeyAndKisses 1d ago
Itās mentionned on the french wikipedia page, at the very end.
And yes, I must clarify : I donāt mean "women need men hon hon", I'm mocking this kind of statement because people who say it always ommit against who women "need men for protection". (Usually other men)
58
u/xhivo 1d ago

**Trigger Warning**
Ah beloved sisters, all. This was beautiful to see and it stirred some sleeping memories living in the dust of my "before".
Aren't we all truly each other? I didn't always think that. In my before I felt alone. I was scared. I lived in fear for my life. My then partner was sitting on the bed with several weapons scattered. He was cleaning them. I walked into the room to put something away. I was folding something with my back to him when I heard "I wonder what would happen if one of these accidentally went off...in your face?"
Then the feeling of my entire being seemed like it turned to something like stone. I turned, slowly and looked at him. He was smiling and laughing to myself as he continued to clean them.
And now, breath......that was in the before.....this is today. An entire lifetime away now.
My heart hears what is being said here and from these amazing Gal/Chicks. They are survivors, yes. And they are like the facets of a diamond. Multidimensional, beautiful, sparkly, intense and so incredibly strong.
Today is just a Saturday in this life. And each of us are breathing the air and thinking our thoughts as we go about our days/nights. But one thing will be true for me, forever. We are one. Without you, you being so many countless gal/chicks I've met on this road, held me up. Walked me home. Gave me time. Gave me grace. Ultimately giving me back...myself.
This was a beautiful reminder of what allowing someone to heal and building a support network of like-minded people can do. Just imagine! ā¤ļø

Those who say women must submit and that their natural roles are submissive, what do they make of this? Even women born into misogynistic cultures where sexual violence is common won't take shit. You'd think they would get used to it and come to accept it as a part of their life. But they yearn for freedom and for a better life and are willing to fight for it.

I've seen an interview with Jameela Jamil, and she points out modern men work 9-5 jobs, are told what to do like good boys, and don't rock the status quo if theirs injustice.
Meanwhile so many women shake the boat, tell others how they think, support each other and lift others up... It's men who have turned more submissive.
13
u/Nyardyn 1d ago
I think the thing to take from all of these stories, for men, is: only if you're weak, you need others to be weaker than you. Nobody will respect you for mistreating a woman just because she does not have the physical strength to hit back. That is the sole reason you go for her. Because you're weak. All women will look at what you do and they will know the sad, little loser you are.

Nairobi, Kenya has amazing weather despite being so close to the equator due to its elevation (year round avg highs range from 71-82F/21-28C ). Depending on this villageās elevation, it could be similar. So it might not be as hot as you think! Plus, you do acclimate when you donāt have airconditioning Ā access.
3
u/Onehundredpercentbea 1d ago
On all the solo/female travel subs my contribution to East and South Africa threads is advice to pack warm clothes! It takes people by surprise how chilly mornings and evenings can be, sometimes even during the day depending on the location.
3
u/Onehundredpercentbea 1d ago
I work in East Africa and it's actually a temperate climate, surprisingly even close to the equator. I'm there May-September and I'm often wearing my light down puffer jacket, especially in the towns at higher elevations like Nairobi. I'm cold there far more often than I'm hot!
In fact when I zoomed with colleagues from Nairobi one July, it was 55F and cloudy and damp and I was wearing a denim jacket and a blanket scarf bunched around my neck while the Americans were all wearing tank tops and everyone had a laugh about it, 'guess which person is in east Africa right now' and it's the one who looks like she's about to go apple picking in October. :)

I donāt have a LITERAL allergy to the sun, though I did go to college with a girl who did, I felt so bad for her. I never understood how she didnāt get a heatstroke. She had to always wear tons of layers and carried an umbrella/parisol to protect her.
She did have GORGEOUS skin though. No sun damage obviously. She looked like a doll
I am just naturally extremely pale and burn so easily. I am genetically made to survive a harsh Scottish winter. Heat, not so much

u/allshookup1640 1d ago edited 1d ago
I would recommend getting tested. See if you have XP or EPP. You can be qualified for disability benefits in most places if you actually have it. The girl I knew had special documentation for housing and accommodation. She had to be assigned to a dorm that didnāt have a window facing the east or the west so the sun wouldnāt stream in directly. That way if she fell asleep or forgot to close her blackout curtains, it wouldnāt stream in on her as directly. She got SEVERE pain from the sun and a horrific rash. It was really bad.
I donāt remember exactly if she had XP or EPP, but it was really rough for her.

I found out, 43% of the pop where I am has been sexually abused.. 43%, of All the population.. about 1/3 estimated to be kids..
Yeah, I tried to start something like this. Won't say where, but its an island. Basically low income (capitaslist/socialism friendly) commune for women onky, preferred to those of domestic violence. The amount of startup needed. Measurabke, but Feeling, immeasurable. Perfect place, perfect location, safe, little to Almost no crime. The legal and regional bylaws to get thought would be intense. Because its small without a lot of resources, they want to know people who go there couod benefit the island. And not pollute, or take. Which means Preferably, having a plant for containment. Solar, rain water gathering, anything you can. Bc even water there is limited since they're surrounded by the ocean ..
Ive loteralt thought it out down to grants, who to hire. They prefer locals to work ..startup just to get there. Seems impossible, unless I work in mining for afew years, Might be with it to make this .. but There .
Edit: giving this a real award .

The closest my community has was we have a womenās only hair salon.
We have a high Muslim population in our town and large percentage of that is comprised of women who wear hijabs. The womenās only salon is owned run and staffed by only women. They only do appointments and do they them by blocks for hijabi women several times a day. When the appointments go on, they lock the doors and close the blinds. That way women can take off their hijabs freely in the open area without worrying about any man walking in on them. When a client is done, they escort them out through a hallway where the main room canāt be seen and they shut and lock the door behind them.
The hijabi women donāt have to be taken to a separate room at the back or have it done at home like most places. They can have the same experience as all the other women in town. The fun music, the community vibes, everything without having to worry. Itās also SO cute. Itās pink and very glitz and glam. I just love it.
Itās so funny. Some men got all mad and called it sexist that there was a womenās only place. Suddenly a menās only barber shop popped up and they shut up. Little did they know that the owners of the menās only shop are the same women who own the womenās shop š
15
u/CottonTipsMcChancla 1d ago
I mean⦠it is sexist.
In the sense that if they couldnāt shut the blinds and lock the door they have to go to a separate room āat the backā out of view or at home. These women have to change their behaviour and require stores to change their operations because theyāre fearful/unable to have their hair out in public, lest they be seen by a man that isnāt related to them.
Itās fucking sexist and oppressive.
To women.

Remember the difference - a woman see's a man with no hat/ etc no one worries about HIS modesty - NOW a woman - If her male OWNER - finds out a man saw her hair - she has shamed him and may actually pay with her LIFE - Not legal ANYMORE - but well maybe a slap on the wrist - they still murder their daughters for disrespecting the families.
EDIT; look into WHY women must cover their hair - it has to do with "angels" and lust.

I think itās a good thing it is a man. Men/boys seeing other men speaking up about something tends to unfortunately have a greater impact than men and boys hearing women speak up. If they donāt care about women, they are not going to care what they have to say. Whereas if itās a man, they are more likely to listen

Sad that we as women have to make "men free" zones. Men free fitness centers, men free train cars, Why - FOR OUR safety. Many of the tings we have used as defensive weapons have been outlawed - it might hurt a man - hatpins ( must be short now), pointed umbrella tips, cat key rings etc.
I have many Transgender friends ( usually m-f) and even they are disgusted at the way these men act ( we joke about coming over to the right "team") Not all men are like this - but TOO many stay silent about the good old boys club - and allow ( secretly admire?) these POS If a group of 5 men are together and 1 says a rape joke and 4 men do not call him out - all 5 are guilty.

Hello /u/mindyour!! Thanks for posting on r/justgalsbeingchicks!
This subreddit is here to provide a place to post pictures and videos of women having fun and doing cool things. Is your post celebrating women or is it talking about men? Is your post showing a woman doing something cool or is it showing men doing something uncool? Would your post make a little girl proud to be a little girl or afraid to be one?
Our sub is about focusing on women through uplifting female centered content. If it doesnāt fit that please donāt post here. It will be removed.
Please read and understand the rules, as posts and comments that violate them will be removed. If you see someone violating rules, please report! This sub also follows Reddit's rules found here.

This is a nice place. If you can't act like a civilized human being, you can't be here.
We do not allow:
- Being a jerk. This includes racism, misogyny, misandry, misgendering, anti LGBTQ+, ageism, etc.
- Harassment
- Trolling or sealioning
- Threats of any kind
- Abusive behavior
- General assholery. If you're at the end of the list and asking what rule you broke, yeah, it's this one.
