I had a little girl compliment my hair in Costco last week and I about cried 😭 felt exactly like this 💕

u/9_of_Swords 17d ago
A few years ago I dyed my hair a super bright pink. Warrior Pink from Manic Panic. My bestie was going through breast cancer treatment at the time.
My husband and I were standing in the customer service line at Costco, and I heard this little shriek behind me, followed by, "PINK! SHE HAS PINK HAIR! MOM! MOM! LOOK! HER HAIR IS PINK!"
This little girl riding in a cart was losing her mind over my hair, and I still ride that high to this day.
Edit: fatthumbed a word, corrected!

Right?! We don't dress for the male gaze. We dress for the little girl gaze, and the little girls we were (and still are, in a way!).

Once I was coming out of a restaurant with some guy and this little girl, maybe 5 or 6 years old, was walking with her parents to go inside. She stopped with mouth agape and said to me "You're so pretty!!! Like a PRINCESS!!!"
I had on a sparkly dress, and it made me feel amazing. I thanked her and told her she looked like a princess too. I will never forget and this was like 12 years ago

We can! There was a lady in the Laundromat one day that had a serious resting B face...totally intimidating. She came around the corner and I told her that I loved her sparkly sandals.
When I tell you that lady starting smiling and bouncing around that Laundromat like she was having the best day of her life. Then she came back around and complimented my dress. You never know what a kind word can do.
I intentionally compliment people if I see something I like: hair, nails, makeup, outfit, shoes. I once watched a guy masterfully parallel park. He did such a stellar job, I had to stop and tell him. His wife laughed and said, oh, great. He's never gonna stop talking about that now! It was awesome.
18
u/BushcraftBabe 17d ago
My husband and I complimented a lady for her park job one day. I had skipped that spot unwilling to squeeze in but she negotiated it perfectly. She was all smiles. I love being part of why someone smiles.

u/Severe-Chicken-5791 16d ago
I pulled off the smoothest, perfect parallel park and I was so disappointed for the lack of witness. Then I stepped out of the car and someone loudly applauded.
That was about 20yrs ago. I’ll never forget it 🤣→ More replies (1)101

I have had pink and purple hair for about 4 and a half years now, and the little kids are the best :) I think they think I'm like a doll or something 😂 it's my favourite thing to be shopping and hear "Mum, she has pink hair!"

u/SuiGenerisPothos 17d ago
I've had a little girl run up to me at the zoo and jump stop in front of me and say "I really like your hair!" (It was blue and red at the time.) Her mom came running up, embarrassed, apologized, then added "But your hair IS really cool."
I couldn't stop smiling that day and told my stylist about it the next appointment.

A while ago I was at a work social event with families there.
A coworker had his wife and daughter there and told me about the one time he was working from home in a teams meeting and his 8-or-so year old daughter came in, saw me on the screen and asked "wow, who's that? she's so pretty!!".
His wife found it really funny, because she couldn't tell whether it was me or their daughter who was blushing harder in that moment.
I'm usually not bad at taking compliments, but from children who basically just speak their mind they feel so much more real.

u/InfiniteRosie 17d ago
I used to work at Toys R Us (we had it in Canada at the time still) and dyed my hair a rich bright red. One little girl came up to the register with her mom and just yelled "You look like Ariel!"
I dyed my hair red for 7 years after that!

u/TwistedFae89 17d ago
I'll be riding the high of a little girl tapping me on the shoulder last weekend to tell me she really loved my hair and it was the cutest interaction. Its galaxy hair and she was the sweetest. Her mom laughed and said the little girl had been working up the courage since they sat down!

Many many years ago, back when Frozen was super popular, I went to EPCOT with my sister and her husband. Did a sort of very light bound where I wore a light blue full length fitted dress, and then had my sister do my hair in a french braid (I can't for the life of me). But I have red hair.
Was in a quiet bathroom. As I was leaving the stall an adult and a small girl came in and went into one. I was washing my hands and could hear the little girl first get excited, then get confused and ask why Anna was dressed like Elsa, lol.

i had a little boy (prob 4 or 5) a few years back say real casual (while holding his moms hand), "that lady has a nice butt" -- he wasn't "catcalling" from his tone just appreciating 😂
and recently while dressed in battle armor and a skull mask and holding a spear watch this little girl go, "wow! i want to be like that!" which was such a great feeling because i hoped i made her day and inspire her 💙

When I was around 6 years old, in this small country town, dead of winter, my Dad and I stopped to grab some hot chocolate at the tiny coffee shop. I remember seeing the most dazzling woman I've ever seen in person. As an adult now, pretty sure she was just some early 20 something year old home from college for the holidays. But to me, she looked so pretty. She had a short cropped black bob, a black velvet jacket, and she had these bright red lips and knee high leather boots. It wasn't anything special, she wasn't a real life fairy or anything. She just looked like your average college girl who could easily be seen in a Starbucks writing a college paper and enjoying a crisp fall afternoon. But to little 6 year old country me? She looked like she stepped out of the tv and was just sitting in our humble little coffee shop.
I have been obsessed with black leather boots and red lipstick ever since tbh.
That woman has no idea how stunning she was to me. She has lived her entire life with no clue for the past 30 years she has been one of my first ever inspirations.
ETA: And, I've had a handful of little girls in my life come up and tell me how much they love my lipstick xoxo. Pass it along ladies.

I remember walking home from school and seeing (watching) some woman walking in front of me for a while and she had the most beautiful trench coat and looked so stylish. I've been trying to find the perfect trench coat ever since.
It's difficult cuz I'm a bit tall and every one I try sits awkwardly too high for my waist :(
Edit. Y'all are awesome with great suggestions! Giving me hope one day I too shall find the perfect coat :)
80
u/Remarkable-Mood3415 17d ago
Girl, treat yourself. I am also tall, and large busted. The day my Nana dragged my ass into a lingerie store to made them size me and get me a proper bra was like lightning struck. I do not need to fit into things, we can make those things fit ourselves. Find one you love, ask a local alterations place, buy the coat, get it done right.
You'd be supporting a local craftsman in your area and looking stylish AF while doing it. And my biased opinion, wearing knee high boots and killer lipstick with the coat too! Haha

I'm going to tell you the same thing I'm trying to tell myself. It's time to visit an alterations place. Idk why I'm still intimidated... I got something altered a long time ago and it was incredibly cheap and fast
21
u/kindadeadly 17d ago
I've been thinking about this too. But first I gotta find that (almost) perfect coat and I've got high standards but am also cheap, so it's a long journey.

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 17d ago
Just a thought?
Vintage Menswear might be a perfect place to start, because they'd have that height/length you'll need, and the smaller sizes would probably be in excellent condition, to tailor down to a more feminine cut!😉

I found a nice, middle-aged Hispanic woman who lives only two blocks away from me. She barely speaks in English, but it's easy to get her to understand what you want. I have had a shirt and a pair of pants altered for a wedding and both together cost me less than $20, plus she has some really cool little dogs to play with while you wait.
It does not have to be an intimidating experience

You reminded me of something:
When I was an early teen I saw this girl in her early 20s. She had this really great wavy hair.
Anyways, we were all in the queue to take passport type photos. She sat down flicked her hair to the side with her hand and took the photo!!! And that was it!!!! So confident!!! ❤️ I really aspired to be like her ☺️ I am quite confident 😅 but not like that7
u/rebelcupcake 17d ago
I don't particularly remember this, but when I was three or four my parents took me to a baseball game. Sitting behind us was a woman with blonde hair and a pink dress. I spent the whole game staring at her thinking she was real life Barbie! Apparently my mom told her and she spent the rest of the game being Barbie for me. 💕💕

I used to dye my hair a dark Seafoam green color and I had the cutest interaction with a little girl.
I was in line at a store and a little girl was staring at me and trying to get her dad's attention. He told her to stop staring and she goes "but dad I think she's a mermaid!" It made my day 🧜♀️✨

One of my fav things to tell little kids is that I'm part mermaid. I have webbed toes, so it's easy to play along. "Oh yah, my great great great grandma was a mermaid. See? My toes? Yep. That's all I've got though. Just these toes" and the look of pure magic and wonder on their little faces...

I got really into LARPing, and I often wear antlers, stylized makeup, and have cool flowy pants and garb. I light up whenever a little girl asks if I’m a fairy or magic. I stopped wearing antlers as much because I made a bigger quiver for my arrows and they tend to clash. A friend asked why I don’t wear them as much, because his kid saw me one day and said “she’s the coolest!” So now I need to workshop my antler and quiver situation haha
It’s a way bigger ego boost to make a kid think you’re magic than it is to impress men

I'm vaguely reminded of the time I was wearing an eyepatch while out at a restaurant. I get migraines, and sometimes I need to cover my left eye.
There was a family at the next table, and this little girl noticed me and whispered to her mom, "That girl's a pirate!" Her mom attempted to shush her to be polite, but all throughout dinner she kept staring and was just fascinated.
As they left, the girl approached me (again, her mom was doing her best to stop her but was unsuccessful), and she asked if I was a pirate. The mom apologized and was clearly dying inside, but I was getting a kick out of this. I told the girl yes, and she said with so much excitement, "I didn't know girls could be pirates!" 🥹

Reminds me of last winter when my husband and I got all dressed up for his work Christmas event. The attire was formal and once your past proms and weddings you realize the average person doesn't have much reason to dress up to this degree often, so we went all out(I even had a very sparkly faux emerald covered headband).
My 4 year old son comes upstairs and sees me in the full outfit for the first time and matter of factly goes "you're a princess." I don't even know how to describe how amazing and special that felt. It was even better when we returned home hours later and I was like "let's get upstairs for your bath time" and goes "okay princess mommy!"

I'm guessing since I can't find an exact match that it's made from a ring that's been cut in half and glued on.

I was a 17-year-old metalhead with a lot of hair and eyeliner sharp enough to wield in battle and one time a little girl walked past me on the train and said “Mummy, she’s SO PRETTY!” loud enough that I could hear her over the music in my headphones. I often wonder what became of her.

I dye my hair all colors of the rainbow, fun combos etc and i work with children. I wear super colorful fun shit and always play with my makeup and I cannot tell you the amount of times I've had little kids compliment me and then I hear them talking to parents about the "mermaid" or "fairy" that works here and it always makes me have the bigggesssstttt smile. Like YESSSS this is EXACTLY what I wanted

I work in a doctor's office as as an IT guy and one of my favorite things about this job is every once in a while a kid will escape from their parents and run around the clinic exploring and they giggle with delight at the freedom while the parents are chasing them, but they see me (older dude) and stop because they aren't sure what I'm going to do, I look like a meanie pants maybe, but then I have a stash of stickers ready to go for these occasions and I reward their braveness for escaping with Spiderman or Frozen or whatever sticker seems appropriate.
Random interactions with children can be one of the most fun things in the world. Almost magical sometimes.

I went to a training at United Way (a local non-profit) and the city level pageant winner was there. She was soooo beautiful! I was a straight woman in my 40s but to me she was like seeing a fairy princess. Her white, white teeth, red lips, sparkly tiara and dress and she must’ve been 6 feet tall. I had to stand behind a pillar and stare at her. Lol. I’m not usually so creepy but she was verpretty. I guess that’s why she was Miss “Mytown.”
I don’t know if she went any further. When a judging scandal broke out I felt sorry for all the contestants.

For about fifteen years I wore my hair long (waist length) and dyed in blues and greens and purples, a very mermaid-y vibe.
I got to meet SO many little kids, and every time they asked if I was a fairy or mermaid, I’d wink and whisper in their ear “yes, but it’s a secret, that means the only people you can tell are your mom and dad, that’s how secrets work.”

I love this so fucking much because I do something similar. I work in child and adolescent psych, usually with teen girls. My goal every day is to be the adult I wish I had at their age. I do really colorful elaborate makeup and wear glitter and fake lashes, because I love it and I want to show them that it’s ok to be yourself, whatever that looks like. I wish so fucking hard that 13 year old me had a lady with neon glitter eyeshadow and borderline drag queen full face makeup telling her that it’s ok to be who she is.

A couple of years ago, I (then 25F) was visiting a friend in Berlin ((and went to the Britney show, August 2018)) and had some time to kill before I took my Flixbus home. So I was at a big shopping mall, I think in Steglitz. I was just walking and I saw a woman a little younger than me, with lavender ombre rainbow fairy hair, absolutely perfect fairy! She had big headphones on. I was debating going over, but I did, tapped her on the shoulder, told her "Hi, can I tell you something?" she nodded and I said "Your hair is sooo pretty!! ☺️✨️🥰🥰🙌🏻🙌🏻😍✨️✨️" And she just smiled the biggest smile and thanked me a lot. I just walked my way then, but a bit happier. :)

My daughter is on the autism spectrum and has a hard time with loud, crowded spaces, so she often keeps to herself in public, wears headphones, etc. But when she sees a person rocking awesome makeup or clothes that she loves, she always compliments them and it always brings a smile to her face. The sweet person will often compliment her back on her makeup or clothing and it will make her entire day 💖

I was once on a hike and an older woman (in a group of men) asked me for directions. She then thanked me and said to her group, “we were saved by a forest fairy!” Best compliment ever!

I've got a dumb shirt with a skeleton and pastel rainbow letters saying everything sucks. Absolutely my fav shirt cause a random 7 year old kid stopped her bike ride, turmed around just to tell me she really liked it

Help what is that beautiful thing on the bridge of her nose!!! Is that a piercing? Can I get one? ???
7
u/Major_Fudgemuffin 17d ago
I'm seeing "nose bridge cuff" or "bridge clip" while googling around. I don't think it's a piercing, so I imagine they stick on.
I'm no expert though

You are a fairy! Look at you. All you have done is let the world see who you really are since it's not always obvious to us mere humans. Love it.

Anytime I see a woman out, looking sassy, I always make it a point to tell them that I like what they have on & they immediately tell me where they got it, so I can order it too 🤗 It would have made my day to see this young lady irl. Absolutely magical 🪄

This is literally the highest compliment. One time I was coming home from office and a little girl and her mom were walking in front of me. She turned and did a double take then 'whispered' to her mom that when she grows up she wants to dress like I was.
I literally first pumped at that.

Once when I was on the tram returning home from class, I was standing near a mother and a daughter. The little girl, probably still in kindergarten, was holding a Barbie doll in her hand. At the time, I had my hair dyed very light blonde, almost platinum. That girl looked at her Barbie, looked at me, again at the Barbie, again at me, and then excitedly whispered something to her mum. The girl reminded me of myself when I was her age, Barbie and Hannah Montana were my idols!

One time on Halloween some kids came trick or treating before I'd got my costume on. One of them looked up at me wide eyed and said "you look like a witch". I said "that's because I am one. It's nice to be able to come out and be seen at this time of year, most of the time us witches have to hide" and they were all like "whoaaaaa", took their candy and ran away. I know they just wanted a spooky experience but I felt so tickled. I used to spend a lot of energy dressing myself and wearing makeup that would look witchy, and these kids saw my witchiness in sweatpants and no makeup 😊🧙♀️🪄🧹🔮🐈⬛

This ❤️❤️❤️ I dress in flowy, bohemian style cloths, I used to have a beautiful celestial patterned shawl that looked great with high boots and a black skirt, I wore it out shopping one time and this little girl couldn't stop complementing me, I remember her saying "everyone looks nice but you look amazing!" And it was so sweet, like yes, you can dress however you want and have fun with clothes!!

On my wedding day a little girl told me I looked like Barbie. I couldn't have had a better compliment and it was the highlight of my day, you know, besides that other thing that happened.

The checkout girl at Giant Tiger had all sorts of colours in her hair, and my then 4 year old froze in her footsteps and just gazed at her. The checkout girl smiled and waved in a way that made it seem like this ain't the first little kid she's enchanted.

Several years ago There was a 4yr old little girl who thought I was Santa. Standing in the checkout I hear this little "Hi" behind me. It was a little girl riding in the mom's cart. I turn around and say hi back. She looked at me and her eyes went as big as saucers. I turn back around waiting my turn to check out. Then I'm in the biggest rear bear hug by this little girl. Her mom yells at her to not touch strangers. This little girl is looking at her mother with a confused look. "Mom it's Santa."
She now has a story to tell of when mom got mad at Santa at the store.
I thought this was hilarious.

Im a punk with colorful hair and when i was a bit younger i used to help my grandma out at work, she was a 1st grade teacher and id come in for an hour twice a week to have the kids practice their reading for me so she could focus on lesson plans. All the little girls there adored me and collectively refered to me as “the motorcycle fairy” 😂

This little girl once nonchalantly passed me and said she really liked my hair and ive been riding that high for years

u/LookyLooLeo 17d ago
I mean, I’m well into my 30s and I was thinking, “If she had dark hair, she could be Crysta from Ferngully!” So, the little girl wasn’t wrong! ✨🧚 ✨

I went to a diner once with my parents who never liked my dyed hair or tattoos. A man came over with his daughter shyly hiding behind him until he said “go on” to her. She quietly said she liked my (pink) hair, and that she couldn’t wait until she was a grown up and have pink hair and “drawings on her arms” too. Then she ran away back to her mom at their table. I almost cried. It felt so great that it happened in front of my parents too haha.

I was out having coffee with my fellow witchy pals and we noticed a little girl at another table staring at us the whole time in awe and taking a sneaky picture before she left. It genuinely made my day, I remember admiring older women and their awesome clothing and it was so nice to think I was now that woman 🖤✨

Always the best feeling ever!! When I do dress up, I had little girls tell me I either look like a mermaid, Pokemon gym leader or Monster High character and it makes my day!
4
u/DetonatingFlower 17d ago
Bro honestly compliments from little kids???? Top tier. You cannot beat that. Adults- ehh they have ulterior motives. Kids are BRUTALLY honest. Still riding that high from the little girl in my kids preschool who said I was really pretty. I told her so are you!!!!

I was 99% sure I knew where this was headed, because I too thought "that woman looks like a fairy"

If Disney wasn't such a freaky company to work for, I'd say this fairy should be our next Tinkerbell! I mean, the face, the makeup, the voice, the vibe. FAIRY. Fairy all day/all night.
I wore a Victorian gown in duchess satin and period hat with a large plumed feather in Paris at a gorgeous park. A little girl ran up to me and gave me the little beaded bracelet off her wrist. ::Me, crying::

u/villainless 17d ago
i dress the opposite, i’m goth and very alternative. i’ve had little kids come up to me and tell me how cool they thought i looked, same with teens. i in a very conservative town and i like being an example of someone different, as i didn’t have someone like me to look up to

u/Witchy_Venus 17d ago
This always feels amazing lol
I heard a little girl ask her mom if I was a "rockstar" once. She came up and said she loved my hair and dress 😭

u/EpitaFelis 17d ago
The only thing a little girl ever said about my look was "you can't wear those shoes with your outfit." Oh but your pink shirt goes with your purple trousers, is that right? 8 years old and already NOT a girl's girl.

My daughters got mermaid swimmers for Christmas complete with tail. My 10 year old had a gaggle of toddlers at the lake doing mermaid class. A dad walked back from the carpark with his toddler and looked embarrassed and said, she forgot to say goodbye to the mermaid. I like to think that they had a magical, memberable day

I had a heart attack patient that needed a procedure and he lived with his daughter and 4 year old autistic granddaughter. The granddaughter was having issues with object permanence and freaking out about her pop pop. At the time, I had pastel rainbow colored waist length hair. He told her not to worry, he had a special nurse there. After his procedure, she was able to visit and I grabbed a bunch of medical supplies for her to play with. He had specifically asked me to wear my hair down when she came and she squealed “mommy! Pop pop has a fairy mermaid keeping him safe! He’ll be okay!”

One of my sisters has a very unique, very fancy style of dress. She always looks gorgeous when we leave the house, makeup done, tons of sparkly jewelry, always wearing a dress or long skirt. She’s always dressed like that since she had money to buy her own wardrobe.
We were at a baseball game once—just a minor league thing, not particularly well attended—having a great time, and no occasion changes my sister’s outfits (which I love for her!), and this little girl, maybe six years old, comes down our row during the seventh inning stretch (I think her parent was waiting on the stairs.) and tugs my sister’s sleeve. And my sister goes down on one knee from her four-inch heels, and I hear (ridiculously loudly over “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”), “EXCUSE ME! I JUST WANTED TO SAY HI BECAUSE I THINK YOU LOOK LIKE A PRINCESS!”
And I think everyone in three rows up and down “aww’d.” And my sister is so good with kids that she said something like, “Well, thank you! And I’d like to say hi to you too, miss, because you look like a princess as well!” Ugh. I love being a younger sibling so much. Because I genuinely tell this story to everyone and am like, “That’s my sister! The princess was my sister!”
