Job searching This is the worst job market of the 21st century

I guarantee you that this is the worst job market of the 21st century, and it’s not even close. Is the level of implosion on par with 2008 or 2009? Absolutely not. But trying to actually get hired for a job? Mission impossible. Much, much harder than it has ever been at any point this century. For those currently employed and haven’t had to search for a new job in years it is hard to realize, but once you are thrown into a situation where you need a job, you will get very rudely awakened.

Article 8 hours a day, 5 days in a row working is too much.

8 hours of working means 2 hours preparing/ driving, if we wanna sleep for 8 hours, which means only 4 hours for personal matters.

If we're gonna live like this for the rest of our lives, day by day sold.Which means companies have bought our life w money.

This is not just about employees; how productive are you gonna expect from an exhausted employee?

Why dont just give us enough rest time so everybody gets what they want?

Here is my idea: we could have work days and rest days on a rotating basis. I prefer Mon, Wed, Fri to be working days, and Tue, Thu, Sat and Sun to be rest days. In this way, we could have enough rest and work on our personal matters before continuing to work, without cutting the consecutive days off(Sat-Sun).

Or: having a shift system by splitting into morning shift and night(afternoon) shift, rather than making tons of ppl siting in the office for the whole day with little tasks. Such as 9 to 1 and 1 to 5 shifts.

Anyway, these are just my personal thoughts; let me know about anything I overlooked, or if there are any better ideas

Job searching Just in case you needed any more material about how bad the job market is…

The query “I need a job” is at its peak in popularity in the last few years on Google, far exceeding any other time in the period recorded (which dates back to 2004).

Post-interview I got the job!!!

It has been a long 10 months of applying and getting rejected but I’m happy to say today that I accepted a new job offer. I am transitioning from retail management to admin manufacturing. I applied for 53 positions. Out of that I had one intake, one interview, one job offer. I knew if I could get to the interview process I could be a serious contender. The role I accepted is exactly what I was looking for. The pay and the growth potential is great. I am looking forward to this new chapter!! :)

Job searching I am so sick of people acting like "just getting another job" is as easy as walking into a store and asking for an application.

One of the most annoying things about complaining about a job is when someone inevitably says, "Just get another job."

Oh, okay. Why didn't I think of that?

The problem isn't even finding a job opening. It's the absolute circus of the modern application process.

You see a physical sign that says “INQUIRE WITHIN.” So you think, great, I’ll go inside and talk to a human being.

Nope. You get pointed straight to a website.

  • First, you have to create an account with a password you'll never use again.
  • Then, you upload your résumé.
  • Then the system says, "Great! Now manually enter your entire employment history." The exact employment history that is already right there on the résumé you just uploaded five seconds ago.
  • Then comes a lengthy, soul-crushing questionnaire.
  • Finally, you submit everything.

And congratulations! You still haven't reached a human being. Now you have to survive an AI resume-screening bot before an actual person even considers looking at your application.

Multiply that entire process by however many jobs you're actually applying for.

When people tell me to "just get another job," they make it sound like you can just walk in, shake hands, and start working like it's 1985.

It’s not. It’s searching listings, creating endless accounts, filling out redundant forms, dodging automated rejections, getting ghosted, and doing the whole damn thing all over again.

Work/Life balance I am lazy and I hate it

Little bit of a rant as it has been bothering me for a few months. I work remotely, hours are 8 to 5. I sleep in almost every day to the afternoon because no one notices. At first I met my deadlines even with this "schedule" of mine but lately it's torture to force myself to work, I reach bare minimum and sometimes I don't even reach that and I feel so guilty.. But no matter how motivated I get, in the morning I just keep snoozing the alarm while teams are open in the background. My job is comfortable and the pay is really good, I feel like I should treat it well and try to work but I feel so depressed and just thinking about the work I will need to do tomorrow is dreadful. I feel like I am sick with laziness or maybe something is wrong with my head, I don't know how to change and be normal, there is literally no reason for me to be this lazy considering my boss already talked with me regarding the fact I'm not meeting goals. Like I am still scared that I will get caught for not working yet I do it anyway... Am I just stupid? Do I need therapy? Does anyone else experience this? How do I change? I am so sick of feeling this anxiety and nausea from work, I lose sleep from it and stay up just so tomorrow comes later... Any input on this would be appreciated.

Leaving a job Quick update

A couple months ago I posted that I was in the process of leaving my old enployer and I went without a new job lined up.

Turns out it was the right decision.

Well, whoever expects that the old enployer went down hard, I have to disappoint. They are doing okay and they also found a good replacement for me and I gave that person a solid handover. But from what I've heard, they are still making the same damn mistakes, the employees are even unhappier than while I was there and I still am happy each day that I left.

Well, now the good part.

Although the job market is currently difficult, within a bit more than two months of relaxed job search, I got two strong offers on my table and of course, I picked the better one in terms of benefits and the team feels easier to manage.

Still have a few weeks before I start and enjoy a nice time off before I go back into the hamster wheel.

Whoever thinks about leaving, do not complain constantly, but start searching for something new. You don't have to quit immediately like I did.

Interviews Please tell me how to prepare for an interview 😭🙏

Have an interview soon, very short notice. How would you prepare for an interview? The only thing I know of is to try memorise answers for questions that may not even show up.

Networking I have a chat with someone on the exact team I applied to in a few hours. What kind of questions should I ask?

• Upvotes

I could really use some advice because I have a chat with someone in a few hours and I want to make sure I approach it properly. My aim is to hopefully get a referral.

I recently applied for a job that I’m really interested in, and I connected with someone who works on the exact team I applied to. We’re having a short chat soon.

I’m having a hard time finding advice that actually applies to this situation. Whenever I search for coffee chat questions, I keep getting things like “What do you do for fun?” or “How did you get into your career?” or “What do you like about the company?” and so on…

That’s not really what this conversation is :/

This is much more targeted because there’s an actual job opening that I already applied for, and I’m hoping that after speaking with them, they’ll have a good understanding of my experience and why I’d be a good fit. Obviously, if they genuinely think I’m a strong candidate, I’d love for them to be comfortable referring me because I don’t want to make it transactional or just immediately ask them for a referral.

I want to actually have a good conversation, learn about their experience and the team, while also making sure I communicate why I’m interested in the role and what I could bring to it.

So for people who have been on the employee side of this, what would you actually ask or want a candidate to ask?

What kinds of questions would help me learn about the team and the role? How would you recommend talking about my own experience without making it feel like I’m just pitching myself so I sound like someone valuable to the team? And how would you naturally bring up the possibility of a referral at the end?

Thanks!!

Post-interview Do I respond to recruiter?

• Upvotes

Had a final (3rd round) interview week before last, recruiter emailed me Friday afternoon with the following message:

Hi (me),
I was able to connect with our hiring manager as all final rounds are now complete. The team is taking the weekend to deliberate, and we will be working through some approvals next week. I will be sure to update you as soon as I can.

We appreciate your patience throughout this process, and I look forward to connecting soon!

Thanks,
(Recruiter)

Should I respond with something like “thanks for letting me know, I look forward to hearing from you” or is it best to just wait for the next update? I’m still very interested in the job

HR ANY HR recently my Mom is searching for Job Hospital backgorund(general managaer post) (India,Mumbai/Thane)

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,
My mom has several years of experience in hospital management and administration, and we’re currently looking into opportunities for a General Manager / Hospital Administration position in the Mumbai/Thane area.

She previously worked at a hospital where her role ended after the hospital reduced costs and replaced some staff. She has solid experience in management and hospital operations and is now looking for a suitable opportunity.

I’d appreciate any general advice on where to look, which platforms/recruiters are useful for hospital-management positions, or what the current hiring market is like for these roles in Mumbai/Thane.

Thanks in advance!

Job searching Just wanted the series finale of The Bear. Can we all get happy endings like this?

• Upvotes

Was an awesome show. At the end the restaurant ended up working out, the lead chef who wanted to do something else appeared to get an internship at an architectural firm, the up and coming chef became the lead chef, the lead host caught someone's eye who sent him off to Japan for some special type of training, and everyone else got to stay in and hone their skills at the restaurant.

I got notice that my job was ending on 22 September 2026. Last day was the 23rd. They gave us a whole day. It was a government contracting job. They could have at least kept us until 30 September 2026 (last day of the fiscal year) but they opted to have us turn everything over to the government employees replacing us and threw us out on the street. WTF. All these employers want at least 2 weeks notice and they didn't even give us two damm days. WTF.

I took last week off and am starting the search tomorrow and I'm worried considering all the news I've seen about the job market and how long people have been unemployed. I've got over 2 decades of IT experience but also hear how so many people with tons of experience and newly minted college grads are having finding a job.

For those of you who have a job, especially a stable one, I'm happy for you. For those of us looking may we all find one and have a Bear type ending.

All the best to everyone and I'm crossing my fingers for all of us!

Leaving a job I’m quitting my toxic job on Wednesday and I feel guilty about it even though I know I need to leave

Okay y’all, I need some advice because I know I’m leaving my job, but I’m having SO much guilt about how I’m doing it.
I work for a really small business. It’s literally just me and my boss in the office. My title is Client Coordinator, but he constantly calls me his assistant and has me doing all kinds of assistant/administrative stuff. I’m also always put in the middle of things with the service team, like having to tell people they can’t take certain days off even if it’s already on the calendar. Basically I end up being the middleman for a lot of stuff that I don’t even feel like should be my responsibility.
My hours are 8:30-6:30, so 10-hour days with a “break” lol. And even the break is constantly changing depending on what he has going on. Sometimes he’ll call and be like “I don’t think I’m going to be able to get away from this meeting, are you okay with not taking a break?” 🙃 and it’s not even just work stuff but if he has personal stuff going on with his family or even if he needs a haircut.. he will be like can you just take a shorter break….

He is also a HUGE micromanager. He calls me multiple times a day - everyday unless physically cannot because he’s in a meeting or networking event or something. I know that sounds nice in theory, but at this point I literally dread seeing his name pop up on my phone. If he’s busy and we barely talk all day, I’m HAPPY lol.

He constantly scrutinizes my work and can be extremely condescending. If I make a mistake, it’s basically the end of the world, but when he makes mistakes it’s “it is what it is.” He has also told me that I’m basically no more valuable than a previous VA he had in the Philippines who didn’t speak English and who he paid $5. At the time, I tried not to take it personally but my fiancé said it was extremely rude and demeaning especially since I constantly work overtime for the company and am flexible to the company needs more often than not.

Meanwhile other days he’s telling me how valuable I am and how much he appreciates me. It’s such a weird love/hate dynamic.

I’m also a Black and gay female which Im obviously open about as he knows I have fiancé that’s another woman.. and I’ve overheard some really gross shit from him. I literally heard him ask another white employee if he knew any white people looking for work because “he’s had a bad experience hiring Black people.” He’s also made homophobic comments about an industry colleagues trans kid that applied to work for his company..

And honestly, it’s not even just the racist/homophobic stuff. I’ve heard how he talks about other employees and people he has connections with in the industry and it is DISGUSTING. It makes me think all the time, “I’m sure he talks shit about me too.” 😂

The thing is, he can also be really personal with me. He tells me about his life, his family, personal stuff, etc. So I feel weirdly guilty about leaving because I feel like I actually know him as a person, not just my boss. I know he’s going to be caught off guard and I feel bad about basically sending an email saying “hey, I’m leaving.”
BUT.
I got another job. And this job is $25k more, salary instead of hourly, benefits, insurance, PTO, better culture, good company, the whole nine yards. Like… this is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for.

And here’s the timing that makes me feel even worse: he is hiring another VA and the guy starts tomorrow. I am supposed to train him.

I’m planning on working through Wednesday and then telling my boss at the end of the day that Wednesday is my last day.

So I’m not even walking out tomorrow, but I know it’s going to feel like it came out of nowhere because I’ve basically just kept my head down this whole time and done my job.
Part of me feels like I should give two weeks because I know I’m the only office person and it’ll put him in a bind.
But another part of me is like… I’m already anxious ALL weekend about going back to work. I dread Mondays. I dread his phone calls. I’m miserable. And I honestly feel like if I gave him two weeks, there’s a decent chance he’d just decide he doesn’t want to pay someone who’s leaving anyway and let me go early.

So why do I feel so guilty??
I’m an empath and I always feel responsible for how my decisions affect other people. I know he’s going to be stressed and I know I’m going to leave him scrambling. But I also feel like I’ve spent so much time worrying about making things easier for him while I’m making myself miserable.
Would y’all give two weeks in this situation?
Or work through Wednesday, resign professionally, and move on to the job that pays $25k more and actually has benefits and a healthy work environment?
And HOW do you stop feeling guilty for choosing yourself when you know you’re leaving someone in a difficult position? 😭

Leaving a job is my workplace fair/should i get a new job?

(unsure what the appropiate flair is, sorry if another wouldve been more accurate)

im 17, and i work at a local catering and carryout company. when i first got this job a little over two months ago, i really like the job, the job was cool, customers were cool, the people there were awesome, etc. i liked it a lot, with some ups and downs, but for this whole last month has sucked. my boss keeps yelling at me and insulting me over small things or things that arent my fault, and he yells at my manager too, who i super cool and chill and he's great.

one thing that i primarily dont like about it is how damn lonely it is. i run the entire store damn near by myself, i have about an hour with my manager and am left alone for about 3-6 hours for the rest of my shift unless my boss comes in to yell at me again, rant about something for 30 minutes, then complain nothing got done in that time because he wouldnt let me do anything. me and my manager have been insulted all the time and its getting really exhausting with my boss yelling at me, then an hour later acting all friendly.

also, since im alone at the store almost all the time, i deal with every rush alone, and also deal with cashiering, food prep, baking, restocking, cleaning, making sure the company budget is updated, plus any extra tasks they need, plus i close 3 of the 4 days i work there (and sometimes 4 of 4), and thats out of their 5 open days. meanwhile im doing all of this for just over 10 bucks an hour after taxes. today, i was finally shown how to open, on friday my boss told my manager for me to come in on one of our closed days (sunday) and show me how to open. when me and my manager got there, me and him, instead of going through a quick one hour breakdown of opening, were lectured and made to do all this bullshit for 5 fucking hours, which couldve been like 3 if my boss shut up and let us work instead of ranting at us.

my manager is super cool though, he is the type that never gets angry or upset with people, and me and him have both realized our boss sucks and we just got to deal with it together, until i change jobs asap as im already applying to a ton of places, and when i turn 18 im applying to every delivery driver position imagineable. i run the shit alone and 80% of my work isnt even the cashiering/food prep i signed up for, especially since i have no coworkers that can work with me as one can only work the one day i dont work and then the last day i work, and same with the other one, so i have no one all day to help out with anything. used to be a great job, now im considering putting in my two weeks notice early and risking losing co-op in school and going back to 7 classes a day

tried to not make it a wall of text and tried to make it paragraphs, but im a bit pissed rn and just want to get this out there. when i hear about my classmate's jobs, i can tell they have it way easier than me because they dont do a whole store alone and actually have coworkers

Unemployment almost 23m and no full time job

I’m 22 turning 23 and just graduated in finance and management. I have 2 bachelor’s degrees from two top schools in two different countries thanks to an international program I attended. I have 3 internships and was very active in student organisations throughout uni, however I’ve felt very behind in life lately and when i look at my peers everyone either has a job or is doing their own thing and I just look lost. My only saving grace is that I’m currently working a part time job for only 12 hours a week. I’m currently applying and taking more certifications (studying fmva and cfa) but even then I feel like i’m just wasting my parents money while doing things that might not even guarantee me a job. I’ve been pretty worried about my future, am I behind for someone my age in life?

Office relations New Job Social

I just started a new job about a month ago. I was put through the wringer in my past job socially so now I don’t even know how to act. I’m concerned that people will stop liking me quickly so I’m afraid to be myself. I’m afraid to step on other people’s toes so I bite my tongue. But I feel like management wants me to speak up. So one day I’m one way and the next day I’m another way personality wise because I don’t even know how to act anymore. I don’t know, I’m all over the place enough that it’s giving me anxiety. I’m not sure what responses I’m looking for with this post. Maybe just insights?

Training Unfair highschool OJt??

So I'm in my on-job-training course in florida highschool. I've been on unpaid medical leave since early September. And my teacher is wanting to fail me for missing my job. They never stated what I should have been doing in the meantime and gave 0 warning or heads up about unpaid medical leave. I have proof of my job and the doctors office. I've also been fighting my job for me to have the unpaid medical leave. So it's been unclear up until about a week ago on what was happening. Cuz again. Not even I knew and I had no way to go about telling my teacher that "idk if I'm fired or not but I'm just not on the schedule???"

Career development Should I Ask for an Internal Transfer to a Better Welding Robot?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I’m a robotic welding operator in the Czech Republic and I’m considering asking for an internal transfer to another welding department in the same company.

My current robot is old and unreliable, with long cycle times, heavy 0.5–2 ton parts, frequent breakdowns, and a production quota that is difficult to reach because of factors outside my control. My pay is heavily dependent on meeting that quota.

Another department has newer, reliable robots, smaller parts, and much easier production targets. From what I understand, the operators there have significantly better earning potential.

I’m thinking of approaching that department’s manager directly, asking if they need another robotic welder, and—if they’re interested—going through my current manager and HR for the formal transfer.

Would you do this, or would you handle it differently?

Especially interested in opinions from welders, robotic
operators, production workers, or anyone who has dealt with internal transfers.
