How’s the internet situation in Iran right now?

I’m a digital nomad looking to spend a month there but I work remotely for a company in Portugal so I need a stable connection. For anyone living in Iran or who has visited recently, how reliable is the internet for things like Zoom/Google Meet, Slack, email, Google Drive etc? Do you usually need a VPN and are there any cities or areas where the connection is more reliable?

eh don't think it's a good time for that man, internet connection's the least of your concerns with what's going on right now lol.

check again in a couple years

But is the internet working fine there? I’m aware of the risks I just want to visit the holy shrines. had my flights booked back in ramadan but then the war started. I don’t think I can hold off any longer.

It varies, but local internet is a hassle to get if you're not already a citizen as it's locked down, nevermind the stupid cat and mouse game with VPNs. They're not really accepted for outside phone coverage either so you'll barely be able to make many calls on a European phone plan as it'll go into emergency minutes, which will wipe out your allowance (ask me how I know lol).

I know visiting the shrines is important but it really isn't the time unless you're wanting to be thrown hard into the deep end, I would visit Iraq as they have they have arguably the most important holy shrines and is less threatened than Iran right now, which is a first in a very long time.

Yes, you do need a VPN, and connections are not stable now. The reliability of connections changes rapidly, so it's hard to say.

My brother lives in a small town in the north of Iran. At the beginning of the war, their internet connection was solid compared to the capital, but now it drops off randomly. On top of that, you have the problem of electricity blackouts for several hours a day, and those too are random and, of course, cut off your access to the internet.
