Arnold Schwarzenegger convinced a robotics firm to decommission its humanoids by teaching them to autonomously jump into molten steel, creating a real-life Terminator 2 scene.

Great now there's a bunch of mixed metals, pcbs, silicone, etc melted together.

Surely there is a better approach to recycle these?

This was done in my home town. The unrefined metal was collected, machined and polished, and the company sells pieces of it as "robot steel" memorabilia.

Someone needs to supply the source of this I've seen this numerous times on Reddit but this is the first time suggesting that Schwarzenegger had anything to do with it

It's on Schwarzenegger's twitter account (I refuse to call it X)

How can we do this with all the new robots and robot dogs?

These things are going to be our downfall when AI takes over.

Ai already "learning" from this. Seems like a bad idea if they ever become self aware.

What I don't understand is doesn't this add a tremendous amount of impurities to the steel? Shouldn't the lithium, gold and other components not be recycled responsibly before these dramatic shenanigans

Terminators cannot self-terminate. They must be lowered into the steel.
