Literally face changing

3.3k

u/Bicykwow 21h ago

Why would someone intentionally filter their face like that? The end result is very uncanny valley and creepy.

2.0k

u/OneKartoffel 21h ago

That's the mainstream im China btw. There're so many funny fail videos of like streamers who accidentally revealed how they look without filter, like in this one. And it's many time so fucking hilarious. The filter those Chinese are using are on another crazy lvl. Just see yourself one of them. It's worth it

u/angelicism 19h ago

There was a somewhat viral one I saw a few months back about how the purportedly 20-something actually turned out to be like a 50-something and she lost like a bajillion followers in seconds.

Anyway, just a reminder that many things on the internet aren't real.

163

u/thesituation531 17h ago

Wasn't there something similar where a young woman turned out to be a middle-aged guy? I feel like it was in Japan. I don't know I might be misremembering

128

u/inscrutablechicken 17h ago

That was a Japanese biker if I remember correctly

Edit: here you go

18

u/Remote_You_9711 12h ago

He actually gained followers after showing himself!

16

u/thesituation531 17h ago

Yeah "biker" is jogging my memory

7

u/TheOneMary 16h ago

Japan, yeah. I still applaud that guy, lol!

9

u/MistakePresent3552 16h ago

Every single time someone mentions that no one is able to actual source where she lost followers, just blindly repeating what they heard from some rando

•

u/Throwawayfaynay 5h ago

They want so badly to look like anime characters but don't realize how uncanny it looks IRL.

50

u/TrueTurtleKing 16h ago

All my co-worker’s profile picture is heavily edited. I mean, they’re not even ugly irl. But literally every single one of them has photo edited pictures.

35

u/Salty_Paroxysm 16h ago

The only time I've edited a profile picture was when my headshot came back and I saw a massive nostril hair sticking out that I had somehow missed. Edited that bad boy out sharpish!

•

u/UpstairsStill3726 9h ago

Afaik, most phones in china edit your face on defaulr

13

u/comfortless14 13h ago

The body dysmorphia is real

20

u/magirevols 14h ago

Its funnier that she is already wearing masks, she could have just stopped at the last mask and been done

•

u/skoomski 5h ago edited 5h ago

When I met my China-based colleagues in-person for the first time, not a single one looked like their picture. I was confused for a moment how these “strangers” knew my name.

•

u/aegroti 4h ago

this was I think about a decade ago but I really wasn't familiar with how prevalent filters were becoming. I remember going on a date with an international student from China I matched with online and they were just a completely different person when we met. I recognise the smoothing out that we're used to now but I just assumed it was make up in her photos at the time.

5

u/MimeBox 13h ago

It's actually a better idea now with the start of ai training models that can train on your face and they can replicate it with just a click.  Beauty filters + stickers over the face + heavy drag makeup etc is the only way around it. Palantir already has it tho, the government already ran your face data through it.

19

u/Famous_Year_1682 12h ago

You… you don’t think a social media filter that’s scanning your face is being used for AI?

Smoothened alien child with a guitar pick-shaped head is the fashion of the day, I see.

119

u/TheRogueToad 19h ago

She looks like the kid from the music video for Aerials by System of a Down.

I once saw a fan made Care Bear vs My Little Pony video made to this song. It’s my new canon and this one you shared no longer exists imo.

Also lived there.

I once had to remind a photogropher that, since the photos would be used in my passport, they shouldn't be edited.

Apparently "cleaning them up a bit" doesn't count as editing.

You're right, nobody outside of China uses face filters to make themselves look more youthful and slimmer. You clocked it, queen.

151

u/Meexe 17h ago

This specific face filter is very popular specifically in China. So yes, the queen did clock it

13

u/A_Texas_Hobo 16h ago

You’re right actually

5

u/casuallyo 15h ago

Surely it would be easy to find at least 5 viral examples outside of China right?

When a face filter makes your head shaped like the typical alien head where your chin looks like it can be used to chip ice.. yeah.. that's a straight up China feature.

Asian beauty standards. My cousins in the Philippines do this to their family photos it's so weird. Like they went and paid for a family portrait and when they posted it online they filtered it to give them tiny heads with narrow chins.

28

u/commanderquill 19h ago

I've decided to delude myself for the sake of personal peace by believing they do this to not have their alteregos be recognized by either their coworkers or their government.

•

u/nilestyle 10h ago

My thought as well. Maybe a little an and a little b?

6

u/DrStalker 13h ago

She looked more natural with the masks on than with the filter.

8

u/xl129 13h ago

Welcome to chinese social media

31

u/IRockIntoMordor 20h ago

Binge this channel and you'll know how insane the Chinese beauty craze is:

https://youtu.be/yMk1OSSAW28

They literally shop their beauty treatments from Illicit clinics as if it were office supplies on TEMU. If you bring a friend to your "inject stuff into face" routine, you get 66% off!

Its so integrated into their culture most app comes with filter by default

12

u/Paggy_person 16h ago

Stick figure and limbs, toddler face, melon breast and super clear pink/yellow-ish skin seems to be something that's really popular there. I've seen some normal video about food, places but the women in the video have to use filter to give themself those traits.

4

u/ChrisPNoggins 14h ago

The filter is usually turned on by default in Asia

5

u/PayWooden2628 13h ago

Pretty sure in China you don’t even get a choice, every social media comes preloaded with filters on every video.

2

u/RedRev15 16h ago

I thought it was another mask the way it wobbled 😂

China's fixation of women with baby faces has resulted in some bizarre stuff.

•

u/War_Hymn 10h ago

Jeez, what kind of babies are being born in your area? To me it looks more like some twisted attempt to make anime faces real.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/themeanreds1 14h ago

That’s literally everywhere. So many people in the US are obsessed with Selena Gomez cuz of her baby face

38

u/TrendNation55 14h ago

The US certainly has problems, but at least there are different faces and skin tones that are considered beautiful. Every Chinese filter is literally just the same exact face they’re going for. They look like plastic dolls.

6

u/themeanreds1 13h ago

Immigration helps a lot with that. China is not an immigration country so for the most part it’s a homogenous society like Japan. Their tastes will be more homogenous as well as a result.

•

u/According-Aspect-669 10h ago

You cannot be serious. Chinese people use these ridiculous filters literally all the time, they are never without them if they can help it. It's an epidemic not found in mainstream US society. Also, obsessed with Selena Gomez? You need to brush up on your US pop culture before your next "but America also bad!!!!1!!1" comment.

u/Polkawillneverdie17 13h ago

Thank you.

These filters are insane. Kids who grow up watching these think that people really look like that and it's giving the fucking body dysmorphia because they think anyone without a tiny neck and chin is fat.

39

u/SarcastiQuack 16h ago

Even after all that she’s still wearing a mask.

13

u/Steelpapercranes 14h ago

and she's gorgeous- it's so weird

5

u/FedeFSA 12h ago

That makes sense. The one on the left looks like a real woman, the one on the right like another mask.

15

u/avance70 20h ago

I was hoping to see this exact comment!

10

u/KnifeFightAcademy 20h ago

Hey! Don't reveal her secrets!

0

u/antiduh 15h ago

If you watch the video, you can actually see her face "jiggle" when the last mask comes off and the filter turns on.

u/Downtown_Injury_3415 14h ago

42

u/spudddly 20h ago

That was the most terrifying face of all of them.

4

u/khoai_ryan 18h ago

That's the real magic trick here!

105

u/yoboyykk64 19h ago

Okay, I've seen these performers do that PLUS the mask coming back on, only parts of the mask changing, and the entire outfit itself changing. I just wish there was a breakdown for it.

95

u/commanderquill 19h ago

Probably just detailed variations of this. Parts of the mask changing would be easy to accomplish by just having a partial mask, and having the mask return would be easy to accomplish by putting the same mask on as another layer underneath.

24

u/SaltineRain 17h ago

To make it look like a previous mask came back on, just have another layer of that same mask again. Same idea with only parts changing, have another layer with the same mask but some part different.

20

u/ithrowclay 17h ago

I’ve seen one of these performances too. They go to the bare face, and then a mask comes back on. I’d like to see how that’s done.

8

u/NigelTainte 16h ago

I agree, this may be one of the methods used but it doesn’t explain all the advanced tricks you can see! I think sometimes they use a mask that can flip back over the face for the bottom lauer

•

u/Bazzatron 11h ago

Same. They give the impression that there are dozens of masks, whereas this makes it seem like the whole act is only a little different than those helmet visor covers worn by racing drivers 😅

•

u/theeggplant42 5h ago

How about rigged up for no mask to drop but sets up another mask to drop behind? Or even a person looking mask that you can't tell is a mask from all the way in the audience

•

u/Lille_8 5h ago

same, I've seen them go bare faced then put the masks back on. Maybe there are different techniques?

6

u/Hy0k 14h ago

Apparently its a tradition among these performers to not share the secrets of how they do these performances outside of their circle.

237

u/Not_a_real_ghost 20h ago

The video is revealing traditional magic trick that’s passed down by performers specifically doing this line of work.

Then the subtitle is framing CCP for brainwashing people and gatekeeping the magic trick secrets? What kind of stupid shit is that

68

u/Umklopp 17h ago

And everyone is clowning on her for using face filters instead of caring about the trick

30

u/thesituation531 17h ago

Yes because it's sad

16

u/Umklopp 17h ago

I've seen comments in this very post disparaging her actual face as the "scariest of them all" and similar. People are even more unkind on Chinese language social media. Even if that's a minority response, it still hurts. Using a face filter is pretty normal and should be the least interesting part of this video but here we are

12

u/ezpzlight-n-breezy 17h ago

They're making those comments here because she used the filter. Sorta a Streisand effect thing. If she didn't use the filter and just showed the trick everyone would've found something else to argue about, but it wouldn't be her actual face.

Chinese or more generally Asian social media is absolutely OBSESSED with face beauty filters. You will essentially never see a photo/video of female Chinese influencers that are not using filters, and many Chinese phones even have filters built into the camera app that are default-on.

Why are people ignoring the things being said in the video? Her video and whole account got restricted for showing this and the reasoning behind it is that they don't want the Chinese cultural "magic" to be revealed. Like, there's some real censorship happening that's being explained.

31

u/zebrasareneat 15h ago

Why are you assuming text written over a video on TikTok is 100% true. Are people incapable of any rational thinking nowadays and just believe whatever assortment of words is plastered on a photo or video.

6

u/R4ven4 19h ago

Btw this isn’t even an ‘embarrassing filter fail’ like it used to be because in China its just completely normalised now so she didn’t even care to edit it. If you go through their social media using the filter is the standard no matter how thin or small you are, man or woman, any channel you watch it glitches on everyone all the time and nobody cares at all

6

u/SortovaGoldfish 21h ago edited 20h ago

I haven't been back to rednote in a while but face filters are expected to be used by just about everyone who shows their face. Not enforced or a rule, just if someone isnt it's like a double take situation.

12

u/The_Undermind 16h ago

Weird thing to censor. I dont think we would need a team of our brightest minds to figure this trick out. A beginner to intermediate magician could have cracked it in an afternoon. Not exactly Cicada 3301

14

u/zebrasareneat 15h ago

No one is censoring anything. You’re just reading subtitles put on a TikTok video and taking it as fact. If it was they use unicorn piss to create the colour yellow you’d probably believe that too.

Like holy fuck people need to start being a bit more rational and use a touch more critical thinking instead of assuming every meme, caption, and text put on a picture is absolute fact.

2

u/Absolute_Bob 12h ago

Their first step to solving a magical trick is to affirm that magic isn't real so obviously it happened some explainable way. If masks are being ripped of at that speed, there are two options. They were pushed off or they were pulled off.

Pulling seems like the easiet of those options to implement and a thin string is a pretty logical device to assume. I have no idea why this would be some kind of secret, it's absurdly obvious.

The technique to do it smoothly with small motions is very impressive, so I have no problem acknowledging that as something they might have some interesting techniques to it, but pulling something with a sting isn't tradecraft.

3

u/Fun-Concentrate-880 16h ago

Some of them are skillful enough that they can change faces without large movements of their arms or legs.

2

u/Thatweasel 15h ago

I... don't think this has been particularly secret for like, 200 years? The EXACT techniques maybe, but i'm pretty sure it's been fairly well known that it's a system of strings pulling away paper thin masks.
