SOCIETY A thick piece of plastic tarpaulin discarded by truck drivers on the roadside got tangled around the deer's head; a citizen who noticed the animal intervened and rescued it.

Illegal dumpers can go fuck themselves. Where I live dumping a 1/2 ton truck of garbage at the Eco Station is $11. Sometimes if you don't have much they don't even charge you. It's so easy to do the right thing.

u/Pedantic_Pict 7h ago
Damn, the minimum fee at the landfill in my county is $50.
16
u/temp_flor 6h ago
It’s free by my house. They started charging a few years ago and big surprise, trashy people started dumping their trash in the national forest on the way to the dump. They stopped charging to go to the dump. Freaking geniuses.

Absolutely, but intentional acts are worse the negligent ones typically from a moral standing
23
u/VP007clips 8h ago
Deciding to drive a trailer with a load is an intentional action. If you make that action, you have a responsibility to ensure it it properly secured before starting.
I've had people illegally dump bags of trash and brush in the ditch next to my woods.
I've also encountered near miss accidents that could have easily been deadly that stemmed from poorly secured loads.
The unsecured loads piss me off more.
Still, this entire debate is a bit silly. We can agree that both illegal dumping and unsecured/poorly loads are morally inexcusable.
2
2
u/StJimmy_815 8h ago
Okay, and what if they fully believed that it was secure?
I don’t think you understand how morality is determined. I agree that the action can lead to more harm in certain situation, it doesn’t necessarily make it more immoral.

Or a car, or someone's garbage, or a camp, or came off a roof that had been tarped off, or was in a garden shed, boat cover... anybody else notice they're in a neighborhood.

Hmm..
Interestingly, most likely involvement by a "truck driver" was the person removing the tarp.

There is no proof it was illegally dumped. More likely the deer encountered it while rummaging through someone's backyard. If you watch the video, you can see another blue tarp at the edge of the fence, which looks adjacent to a circular driveway.

I remember when I lived in Italy and we lived up the mountain, I was working on the underside of a retaining wall. I heard what I thought were horse huffs pounding above me, wrong it was a huge stag and young stag running down the estate.
The older one had a good few points on it and I remember seeing clearly the young one had a few but it had two long almost straight ones at the front. Literal death points
11
u/MalickeSeminko 7h ago edited 7h ago
The deer is probably dead anyways... first of all it injured it's leg, it has a head injury, but this could be managable. The issue is that these situations make a lot of stress for these animals and they usually just die very soon after such incidents from the stress itself (it's called capture myopathy).

You're talking about the front-left leg? Looks like it just falls limp after it hits its head. Can't quite tell if there's a break or not. Best case, it concussed itself and went limp for a moment. Recoverable. Worst case, well, nature's a bitch to the weak and frail.

I've watched a video where this behavior was explained. Basically all animals have this instinct where when they are trapped they fight for their lives to exhaustion but when humans came to the rescue instead of going in for the kill, animals assume a state of processing mode.
They think 'this apex predator is obviously here for my hide but it's not killing me wtf is going on i should've been dead by now wth is it doing?'
The animal doesn't understand that it is being rescued and neither does it understand why it's not getting eaten so they go into a shock of some sorts. Repeated occurrence obviously changes this behavior and explains why other species sometimes outwardly look for humans when they are entangled by man-made objects.
pretty neat

I think that’s exactly what that is. I know that there have been studies showing gazelle’s do fencing response after the ol’ brain stem gets a reset, it’s perfectly possible deers do too.

u/Dizzy-Garbage4066 10h ago edited 10h ago
Holy crap, that was a risky good deed. So glad it worked out, but this could have ended badly.
I worked in wildlife rehabilitation- deer injure good Samaritans much more often than many realize (often found on the side of the road stunned, taken into a car where they warm up and proceed to absolutely destroy the car interior (and/or the good Samaritan).
When I was getting trained they told us more than one story about water birds severely injuring (and even killing) rehabbers with their beaks.
Be kind to the critters, but be smart, too!
Covering eyes and securing dangerous parts (antlers, talons, sharp beaks, teeth...) usually helps. Not sure how I would have gone about it here, but it was a 2+ person job and needed some equipment to protect the volunteer.
4
u/GitEmSteveDave 5h ago
Years back I had a 8 point buck run into the side of my car on a back road as I was going shopping. I pulled over and saw the deer just laying on the ground in a field about 15' down an embankment from the road. I called 911(I didn't know what town I was in and this was before smart phones) and the dispatcher asked me to check to see if it was still alive. I told them straight off that I had seen enough episodes of "When Animals Attack!" to know the damn thing could wake up at anytime and gore me. A officer showed up about 10 minutes later and it hadn't moved in all that time, and as the officer later showed me, the eyes were fogged over, which meant it had passed on.
Some people on the other side of the road where there were houses came over and took the deer to process it. Later on I realized I should have asked for the rack, but oh well.
2
u/cyhec 10h ago
Thought that only happened in movies
23
u/Dizzy-Garbage4066 10h ago
Alas... one rehabber lost an eye, another was pierced through the neck (and bled out immediately), lots of good Samaritans get the hooves from deer, or the rabies from bats (vaccines within 24h for everyone!!!) and on and on.
I got a razor sharp squirrel tooth to the bone as a child. The squirrel had to be tested for rabies, which involves decapitation to test the brain. Failed attempt at helping there on my part 😕

I don't work in animal rehab but I have to imagine the ending where the deer freaks out and slams face first into two trees like a Three Stooges routine because it can't get away didn't help it's overall health
9
u/Dizzy-Garbage4066 9h ago
A BIG part of "rehab" work tends to be euthanasia, alas.
I'm not sure from the video how he's doing- animals can recover from shock better than you'd imagine- but sometimes you can help, sometimes you can't.

That tarp more than likely came from someone’s house. It’s a cul de sac in suburbia not a place trucks would be driving through. It’s also a cheap tarp that wouldn’t last on a truck. There’s even another identical tarp at the edge of the fence as the camera man is walking out.

Doesn't really work like that for adult deer usually. They get capture myopathy really bad and it's hard to actually sedate a wild animal for capture in the first place. There's success stories sure but a lot of wildlife rehab places allocate their resources to animals with better chances, unfortunately. It would've been worth a call to a rehab, but if you ever encounter a situation like this don't get your hopes up.
Ideally he's able to heal up in the woods. I've seen deer that have survived what had to have been serious injuries based on the scars and the shortened limbs. They are extremely tough animals. Quality of life is in question, but these animals often live short and brutal lives regardless of interactions with humans, so it's hard to draw a line there. If it can go on to breed, evolution considers it a win. Can't really ask the deer what they think.
