Seeking additional moderators

Hello all, /u/cuddleslapine has stepped down, and I could use some moderator assistance. I'd ideally like to add at least two additional moderators.

Requirements:

  • History of positive posting in /r/hungarian
  • Strong hungarian language skills (native speaker preferable, but not required)

Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to r/hungarian!

Our community is dedicated to helping others discover and learn the language.

  • If you're searching for resources, our wiki page may help you out. On this page, other Hungary-related subs that may be useful are also listed.

  • Please keep in mind that the list is ever growing and you can always send us a message if you'd like to add anything.

  • Before posting, please take your time to read the Rules of the sub. These rules are strictly enforced. If you have any doubts about your intended post, please send a message to the mods before posting.

  • If you have any specific questions, feel free to post them, as we're more than happy to help!

  • Our community has many dedicated native speakers among our members. We can always tell you how the language is actually being used in real life, today. However, it's very important to note that not all of us are teachers. As with every other language in the world, some Native Speakers may have trouble explaining the grammatical rules of the language to you, despite their best efforts. While we do everything we can to help you, remember that finding a qualified language teacher in your area (or on-line) is never a bad idea.

Our subreddit is always open for feedback! If you have any ideas, make a post or send us a message!

Fordítás Beginner! Seeking social situation script translations

Hello Reddit,

My partner and I are very casually starting to learn Hungarian. One place we discovered would be great to start today is social situations where I (being autistic) want to say things just to him! Here is an example list:

We need to leave
I feel complete/done here
I’m hungry
(I want a) dessert bite
I want a snack
I’m thirsty
Do they have fun drinks?
They seem cool
They seem annoying
What a bitch
What a sweetie
they look just like [and then I insert a really obscure and spot on comparison to someone we know] (this one happens a lot
That’s embarrassinag
Please stop talking /about that
Oh god
Yikes
I love you!!
I’m gonna go hide somewhere for a bit

So yeah any suggestions on how to most accurately convey those things I would loooove. I’m too early on to discern whether Google Translate is giving me the most appropriate responses for what I’m after

Jó nepot kivánok!

Hello Hungarian learners in Phoenix and outside it.

The Hungarian Cultural Association here in Phoenix, AZ runs classes several times a year at beginner and above levels.  1-2 more people are necessary for the class I signed up for ( level: beginner and above.  ). Right now only one other person is signed up!  Classes are held online at 5 pm MST ( same as California time until we change the clicks again again) on Wednesday or Thursdays for 14 weeks beginning October 7, 2026.  The cost is a little under $ 300( US)  .  Member get a small discount.  If you think you might be interested, please go to the website and look for the words " Language Classes"    The website says that students all over the world are welcome.

I went to their Phoenix Hungarian festival during the winter.  Everyone there  was friendly and willing to let me use my halting Magyarl!  I have been waiting to start this class since then ( while studying in my own , but now I believe it when I read that in the case of Hungarian, I at least , really need a teacher!)

https://hcaphoenix.org

https://hcaphoenix.org/language-learning/

I will be just a student. I gain no financial benefit from your participation. ( I am just hoping the class doesn't get cancelled so I can take it !)

Segítségkérés Help with names from Abigail

Hello! Apologies, I do not speak any Hungarian. I am a high school literature teacher in the US. My class is currently reading Abigail by Magda Szabó. My students are really enjoying the book, and we’d all like to make sure we are pronouncing names correctly while reading and discussing. Could anyone help guide me on the Hungarian pronunciation for these places and characters?

- Matula (the school)
- Mari Kis
- Torma
- Kőnig
- Kalmár
- Mitsi Horn

Thank you so much for any help!

Segítségkérés Live captions that support Hungarian

The live caption that can be found in the accessibility settings of most browsers or computers does not have a large range of languages, so Hungarian isn't available. Are there any extensions/apps/etc that can go live captioning in Hungarian, not translating Hungarian audio into a different language or vis versa, just something that can transcribe Hungarian audio for videos that don't have closed captions. I hope this is the correct sub to post in, but forgive me if not.

Hirdetés Here is me struggling to speak Hungarian, but not giving up because I’m too stubborn

I’d like to get some feedback on my current Hungarian. I’ve been studying it inconsistently for a cuple of years now, so it’s definitely more on the bad side of learners. I had ups and downs and now it is time to stop with that.

I decided to cut the crap and recorder myself and document how bad it is now compared to how good (hopefully) it will become. Give me your completely unbiased opinion. Constructive criticism, as well as destructive, is more than welcome.

Köszönöm mindenkinek!

Fordítás Primsleur for Hungarian?

I just saw that the app Primsleur got a Hungarian course and I wanted to ask if it is any good.

Because Duolingo is a fun little way to at least force yourself to do a bit with the language every day but not for learning.

Edit: Pimsleur not Primsleur

Hirdetés [For Hire] Hungarian lessons

🇭🇺 Want to study some Hungarian for just $10?

Are you interested in learning Hungarian through a more conversation-driven approach, with plenty of actual practice instead of only dry grammar exercises?

I'm a native Hungarian speaker and a university student currently studying languages, and I'm looking to gain experience teaching Hungarian — so I'm offering very affordable beginner lessons while I build my teaching experience.

For $10, you'll get a 45-minute planned lesson based on your current level and goals.

Before planning your lesson, I'd love to know:

\- your current Hungarian level

\- what you want to be able to do in Hungarian

\- what topics you're interested in

\- whether you prefer conversation, vocabulary, grammar, or a mixture

\- anything specific you'd like to practice

Beginners are especially welcome! No previous Hungarian knowledge is required.

If you decide you'd like to continue after the first lesson, I can also offer a monthly package of two 45-minute lessons per week for $30/month, most likely scheduled on weekends.

I'm keeping the price low because I'm primarily looking to gain teaching experience and help people learn Hungarian, rather than make a large income from this.

If you're interested, feel free to DM me with your level, goals, and what you'd like to learn! 🇭🇺

Please keep lessons appropriate and respectful. If you expose your genitals or engage in sexual behavior during a lesson, I will immediately end the lesson and block you. No refund will be provided for that lesson.

Payment via PayPal only

Kérdés 4000 most frequently used words

Hi guys!

According to some statistics, to get the B2 level a student needs to know 4000 commonly used words. This practically applicable to any language. Have someone seen any of such linguistic corpus for Hungarian language? it can be a dictionary book, web, not sure about Anki desk but who knows, etc ?

Beszámoló Egy kis lépés…

Post image
499 Upvotes

I know that Duolingo won't make me fluent, but I'm glad I've completed it. It's been my first approach to the language and I've completed the full course (110 lessons) in less than 4 months. I'm reinforcing all the vocabulary (around 1700 lemmas, 2500 words including cases) with Anki every day, both producing and understanding the words. Of course I'm also studying formal grammar with grammar tables from a textbook.

So if anyone has any piece of advice to give me about my next steps to follow… I'll be happy to read you. I would love to consume some actual content in the next months!

Segítségkérés Help with reflexive verbs

Kérdés I want to learn a Uralic language. Am I crazy or…?

Just for some background context, I am Chinese-Korean born and raised in Switzerland and attended an international school. I am fluent in Swiss-German, Standard German, English, Chinese (mandarin) and Korean. I can hold a decent conversation in French and I can write okay-ish in Latin.

I’ve always been vey interested in the Uralic languages. (Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, etc.) I’ve heard that they have some of the hardest grammatical systems in the world and sometimes even native speakers mess up in everyday speech. (I’ve also met many people that tried and gave up.)

Are these languages really this difficult, or is there some exaggeration at play? How long would you estimate it would take to become decent at any of these languages? Considering the languages I already know, would any specific Uralic language be easier to begin learning or are they equally brain-wrecking?

Hirdetés Can you catch the timeline, pain location and medication details in a Hungarian patient case?

We made SziaMed, a completely free platform for everyday and medical Hungarian. Explore full lessons, listening, vocabulary and practice: https://sziamed.com/try

We made this resource, and the course voices are synthetic. If you try it, what feels useful, and what sounds unnatural or is missing?

Segítségkérés Weird Hungarian Translation Request

Hi guys,

This sub has been so wonderful in helping me decipher my grandfathers documents. I have a translation request, with a caveat: I need someone to find the document first 😂

I am located in Canada, and am trying to look up information on the Elektronikus Levéltári Portál. From my research, it looks like the government makes it difficult for those outside of Europe to access it, so I can't get on the page. I've tried hungaricana.hu as well, but as I only can read a few words in Hungarian, it's difficult for me to navigate.

I have been on a journey the last few years to find out the fate of my great great grandfather, and I was got a big missing piece in the puzzle. I'm not convinced I will receive what I need from the municipality, hence trying to access it online!

If this is something you're willing/ able to do, please let me know! :)
