An AMA today with Yoichi Miyaji, producer of Grandia (posting on his behalf, verified by the mod team)

Hello, r/Grandia. This is being posted by the mod team on behalf of Yoichi Miyaji, the producer of the Grandia series. We've verified who he is, and he'll be answering your questions live himself. Over to him.

Hello, everyone. My name is Yoichi Miyaji. A long time ago, I was the producer of the Grandia series.

I'm here with the kind permission and help of your moderators, so that everything is open and above board. This is an AMA, and this thread is going up early so questions can gather while people in different time zones are awake.

Let me be clear about what this is. Above all, it's a Grandia conversation. I'd love to talk about the games, the people who made them, the music, and the memories you've carried all these years. I'll also share a little of the road that led from Grandia to what I do now, and yes, I'm still making games. But that part is a small piece of a much bigger thank you, not the reason I came.

That thank you is the real point. That a community for Grandia still gathers here, after all this time, moves me more than I can easily put into words.

Because this is about Grandia, I wanted to bring a gift rather than a pitch. With the kind permission of Noriyuki Iwadare, the composer of Grandia's music, here is a concert performance of music from the series: https://youtu.be/fO3lz6NvPbQ

And since I want to be upfront: the game I'm working on now is a JRPG called Under Mythos. If you're curious, it's here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5155220/. Please treat it as background, though. I'd much rather spend our time on Grandia and on your questions.

A recent photo of me is included, as simple proof that it really is me. (Photo courtesy of the game site BEEP21.)

The live window is today, Saturday, September 26, 21:00 to 23:00 JST: • 12:00 to 14:00 UTC • 08:00 to 10:00 EDT (US East Coast, Saturday morning) • 13:00 to 15:00 BST / 14:00 to 16:00 CEST (UK and Europe, Saturday afternoon)

Please leave your questions here any time between now and then. I'll answer live during those hours, and I'll come back the following day, my morning, to catch anyone the time difference left out.

Thank you for having me. I'm genuinely looking forward to this. Yoichi Miyaji

Grandia Grand Aspect: a 60 fps and display-mode mod for Grandia HD Remaster

Thumbnail nexusmods.com

Hi all, I've made a mod that allows you to:

  • play the game at a 60 fps during exploration and fights. instead of the game's original 30.
  • switch between the HD and original Playstation textures.
  • apply a crt-shader to the game's graphics

The mod gives you smoother gameplay and removes the need to delete assets in order to see the original textures. I've also re-enabled an (slightly ugly) experimental mode that was in de game's code. It allows you to play Grandia in the Playstation's original resolution and aspect ratio.

Besides the interpolation-mode it is also possible to use a "double-speed" 60 fps mode, that makes the game run twice as fast. This is handy if you don't like grinding. Lastly, I've added an optional CRT-filter to give the graphics a retro-feel.

Both the FPS, the display-modes and the CRT-shader can be switched and cycled with hotkeys during the game.

The mod can be found on Nexus Mods.

Enjoy!

Update: Version 1.2 is avaiable that fixes a bug with texture bleeding while playing in pixelart mode.

Grandia Which enemy to steal from

Hey guys, I have guido in my Party (for now) and was wondering if there are some enemies I should look out for to use Mogaypick. Like are there some equipment or item drops I should go for while he is in my Party? Also is there any limit to the number of steals or any other info on the steal mechanic I should know?
Thanks in advance.

Grandia How does grinding work in Grandia?

I finally got Feena making party three people now and about to do Ghost Ship. Yet monsters still seem to drop only insignificant exp points, like below 10 exp. At this rate, grinding levels would take forever. How does grinding work in this game? Will later enemies drop more exp? Also, how should I utalize Sue? I've read she is not a permanent party member and will eventually leave yet I still am fond enough of her that I don't want to just neglect her stats. Is there any way to make her time as member imortant while not wasting items like spells or stat boosters that will not benefit after she leaves?

Grandia Beat Grandia! 8/10 Spoiler

Post image
50 Upvotes

Spoilers~

Took about two months to beat this.
Sue is my favorite character by far! Then Feena, then Justin. The others I like but not favorites.

After I got the accessory that halved your SP used, I heard

Gadwin's secret move — Dragon King Slice!

like 500+ times.

I didn't' do the last optional dungeon, cause by the 20hr mark I was getting burnt out.

The beginning was so charming. Like I was watching/playing a Ghibili movie alongside a Disney movie.
Then, after Gadwin, it slowed down for me a lot.

Lots of dungeons, lots of enemies. This isn't my first RPG, but it seemed like it was a lot of enemies.

I didn't get Feena's other two secret moves, but I did get the Fire one that did 999 Damage.

Last boss was a joke, the wizard in the cemetery was harder.

I bought a lot of JRPGs on sale on Steam during the summer sale, and I was sitting at my computer bored and literally accidently clicked Grandia, and I'm glad I did. Who knows when I would've played this. It was magical.

The very end, in the after credits when Sue is grown up and Justin and Feena have five kids! I loved that so much.

Combat system was amazing. It was fun when I was able to counter them, but not fun when the countered me lol

The dialogue and voice acting was so amazing. I love hearing old school voice actors, it seems more genuine. Everyone had something to say. I spent a lot of time in each town just talking to people.

The autobattle was also nice. Towards the end, I just auto battled the monsters I ran into cause there was so many and it was just easier than wasting MP/SP.

The final-final boss, I literally autobattled him to death. He didn't do anything to me. I think that's kind of the point though. It was cool just watching them wail on him to death. I did get snoozed like 5 times in a row at one point, but they just woke up and beat it to death.

All the cut scenes were amazing. Leen coming back to Mullen was great.

Sue leaving, guys that hurt so much.

I don't know what else to say. I loved the game, and an 8/10 for me is great. This game def had more personality than other rpgs

Edit: Forgot to mention, the three officer girls that were under Mullen, i loved them so much! I wish you interacted with them more. Fought them more, talked to em, anything! They were so funny!

Grandia Playing Grandia for the first time Spoiler

Post image
102 Upvotes

I never played a Grandia game in my life, so im loving the game a lot with almost 30 hours at this point. I really like the characters thus far.

Just got to this part, I wasn't expecting Sue to leave like this at all, i was half expecting her to get better and get some huge character development and be on their way and happy ending, but i actually wasn't expecting her to just go back though after how much time you spend with her and leveling up her when she has all access to magic, plus shes a very good party member all around and she was debatably my strongest out of the trio (i noticed she lagged behind in levels.... i guess the writing was on the wall on a tehcnical gameplay level looking back.... but i kinda just made up for it in training her magic and all of perma stat boost i had i just gave it to her to compensate) and having to see her go is like... damn game. You took my strongest soldier away after how much sweat and tears i put into training her. Plus i liked her character and dialogue a lot. She was so funny and witty. I liked her since day 1 too and her dynamic with Justin and Feena was really fun to. I thjnk its a cool idea and i kinda respect the ballsy story move to send Sue back. I get why they did it since she's very young and this is more really Justin's story, but still idk, but i don't dislike the story decision. The story is good so far so i will trust this was the right decision. Cant wait for the next part of the game!

Grandia Requesting Grandia Redux save or savestate

Hello. A recent software update unfortunately destroyed a lot of my save data for Grandia Redux, which I was using to test out and research the mod.

I need a PSX-compatible (mednafen or beetle psx) save file or savestate for Grandia Redux disc 1 or disc 2.

Is anyone able to help me out?

Thank you!

Grandia Any other adventure games with a similar art style as this game?

I am really enjoying the game. Just got on the train to the mines. I also like the isometric style with chibi sprites on top and the ability to rotate. And would enjoy other JRPGs or any action adventure with similar style.

Hey guys, I was just trying the DLSS5 with Grandia 3 to check how it looks since we're not getting any new stuff for this franchise sadly and thought to share with fellow Grandia fans since everyone is busy sharing for the more mainstream/popular games these days.

First screenshot is without DLSS5 and then the next ones in different settings i.e. Default, Natural and Cinematic with Single and Dual Pass.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Discussion Is it a bad idea to play Grandia with the Redux mod on a first playthrough?

I'm thinking about playing Grandia with the Redux mod, even though it's my first time playing the game. Do you think that's a bad idea and that I'll miss out on too much of the original experience? I want to do it because I enjoy challenging turn-based games, and I get pretty bored when there isn't much of a challenge

Grandia Started Grandia. What are some things to know first?

I just picked up this game. I rarely play PS1 games but this game does have both a cute little sister and a prominant love interest who is not just passive and barely appears for main MC. And I do enjoy adventure action games. Any major development or plot to expect?

It doesn't have to be villains; it can also be heroes or supporting. But I can't think of anyone more hated than these guys.

Grandia How much is grandia good?

*Pls watch this from a perspective of a girl who is more focused on the story than gameplay. Also even if im obsessed with final fantasy IX, im not a fan of turn based games*

I saw on my switch eshop that grandia HD collection is 50% discounted and how i look at it, it looks pretty interesting, but still im not sure should i buy it. Im not too rich so if i spend this money on that game i will stick with it for long and i dont want to regret it. Pls tell me your honest opinion

Grandia III Where can i find Grandia 3?

I'm not a real fan of JRPG or FF genre, but when i was a kid, i had a hard-copy of Grandia 3 and really enjoyed it. I'd like to re-purchase it somewhere online if possible, but i can't find any online vendors hosting it. Weirdly everyone seems to enjoy Grandia 2, but i'd be okay with emulating it. I tried using PCSX2 but it requires a BIOS dump, which is not really possible without the console.

Anyone know where i can find Grandia 3, either on a Playstation network or some other emulator?
