They are starting to phase out Assistant in favor of Gemini
I had an unpleasant surprise when I found out I no longer could switch back to Google Assistant when Google randomly decided to switch to Gemini. I tried downgrading the Google app but I think it's a server side change as after a few hours it's back to Gemini only even on the older app version.

Thankfully it didn't change my home speakers or other Google Home devices, but it switched on my phone which really pisses me off since not using Gemini was on purpose.
At this point, I am not setting it up, will just not use voice activation (didn't on my phone much anyhow), and limit myself to using voice on my keyboard or by pushing the microphone on Google search.
I feel really bad for those that use voice for accessibility reasons because not only is AI often incorrect in its results, Gemini is very limited in what things it can do that GA use to do easily.

Unfortunately this has been a point of contention for a quite a bit now. Needless to say, as is typical these days... unless you're glued to tech news or discussions - something which isn't even fun to do anymore, you're not the first and won't be the last to have been caught off guard.
In short: Google decided Gemini was better than Assistant despite being objectionably wrong for the vast majority of reasons anyone who still used Assistant despite Gemini being available.
And it totally has nothing to do with a Gemini having a paid-tier. /s
